Flipside Discussion / Re: Is water that isn't wet...?
« on: December 12, 2019, 04:12:32 am »
I thought about the implications of not wet water for a while, too, including things like:

  • What happens if you drink it? Does the magic disappear and make it wet again?
  • What happens if you spit into it or cry or pee or whatever?
  • Which part of the water is dry? Only the water molecules? Would dirt or salt still stick to you? It's like those questions from that song Particle Man: If he's under water does he get wet? Or does the water get him instead

But ultimately I decided that there's no need to bother about it, because this world has magic and we've seen quite a lot of weirder things already, what with Dark Cell and the Pit, but also Bern's new swords or floating rocks or literally anything about Mary.

Dry water is simply in that uncanny valley that make us feel more uncomfortable than magical barriers or various elemental spells like what Suspiria used in her first fight against Mary.

Oh boy, these last two pages slowly start to add some creepiness into this atmosphere. I.e. "Suspiria might be inside of Regina"-like creepiness. I mean
1. Regina isn't actually certain about her feelings towards Crest.
2. She doesn't feel the need to worry about "being careful" anymore.

Especially the 2nd point is something a being would think after having gone through a phase where she could massively alter reality with nothing but a thought.

My first guess, before she said the thing about the "opposite" of nudity, was:
This lake is able to reflect what is on the opposite side instead of your own reflection. Say hello to Eye, the youngest cat-lady ever. But maybe the lake does have multiple magical effects, so I'm still hoping that something along these lines is what Maytag thought for for her.

Or maybe Eye has a multi-use portal with her by now.

I love cute glass-cannon women, too, like in Saikano. It would be sad to lose Suspiria, too, now that Mary has become so stone-cold as well. And if you look at Moby I'm starting to see a trend happen. I wonder what leading the leftovers of the Phalanx-leftovers will do to her.
Anyway, ever since Suspiria stopped being that arrogant bitch from the story's beginning, she has become my favorite character of this comic. I'd be surprised if a character just died right after getting revealed that they're way more powerful than anyone could possibly imagine. I believe that having her snap and turn to stone was a smart way of getting an OP character out of the picture for now. I call that the least amount of time we'll have to wait for her to return is the time it takes for Mary to learn how to use computers. ;)

Btw: I semi-randomly browsed StackExchange and found this:
https://english.stackexchange.com/questions/518087/single-word-for-being-half-in-this-world-half-in-some-other-spooky-plane-of-exi

Maybe Suspiria is currently indeed in a liminal existence, trapped between this world and the other. She could still subtly influence Regina and the others like that, without being able to communicate directly as of now.

Yikes, that'd be exactly the amount of creepiness I'm used to seeing in this comic. So, yeah, I am favoring that theory over my own, too.

Okay, good point about the sword. Provided Crest can stab stone with it. But I theorize that instead her soul went somewhere else. Melter said her spirit essence was gone:
http://flipside.keenspot.com/comic.php?i=3781
So maybe she just wished herself away or something. A secluded place where she could learn to handle her powers without bending the reality her friends are in. I mean, she is a genius and Melter DID give her brief info on what would've been needed to properly break the seals for a bunch of higher levels. So maybe that's enough for her to figure out on her own what to do retroactively AND what to watch out for when breaking future seals. Or she wished herself to a place with people who could teach her properly.

Though something will have to go wrong or else she's going to return as quite an OP character. Maybe Mary switches off the computer at the bottom of the pit and all magic will be gone instantly. XD

And this is pretty much exactly what Bern did for Maytag after Polly and Bern went separate ways. If Polly knew about that, it would sting extra hard.

Hehe, with Flipside you never know when the next horror phase comes up, and that goes well with the comic's name. So I think it was a good thing, not a bad thing, that I wasn't able to immediately tell what was going on. :)

Okay, no more politics it is. :-)

Wow, and I didn't even have to say anything!
Haha, yeah, sometimes view-points are just too far apart for me to want to discuss them. Also because it was going off-topic. :)

@comic:
That last panel made me curious about the next update. I wonder if the whole sky turned black all of a sudden or if it symbolizes the passing of time. In case of the latter we probably won't get to see how the 3 protagonists traded their stories and reacted to them. On the one hand I understand that, because the all had to go through so much and it would take forever to retell everything, on the other hand there are some points where I would've liked to see the reactions. E.g. when Bern did not end up getting raped, but I also would like to know their thoughts about the whole groundhog's day thing that happened in the prison, the personality changes around Suspiria and what will happen with Eye. But maybe they'll get to reminisce about the meeting a bit when it's relevant to the plot?

And I also would like to know why Moby became the Phalanx leader now. I mean, she pretty much singlehandedly blew the mission by pushing Suspiria over the edge by being unprofessionally emotional in a situation where they were probably outclassed by every single other party present, i.e. Suspiria, Melter + Mary, and the prison guy who ended up turning into that monster. If someone like that gets to be the leader she's probably a super tough ice-queen by now and she'll break again later. Either that or the rest of the Phalanx (Q'talda aside) is even less qualified to lead and that's saying something.

Okay, no more politics it is. :-)

I wonder if Moby can still have casual sex as easily as before, now that she leads the Phalanx. And if she will regenerate her eye eventually. But I guess she will keep it that way for a while, because of that one dude who died shortly after cutting his own eye out. Glyph, was it?

But what I'm more curious about is what Mary will find, i.e. if magic is based on highly advanced nano bots or something. Also I can't wait to see if they find a way to resurrect Suspiria, but for now I'm happy that the 3 protagonists are together again. I want to know how they're going to react to hearing about each others' stories.

Well, the "tradition" in America seems to be either:
  • Getting stuck spinning your wheels getting a month to month apartment that never gets anywhere
  • Getting a house on credit and and being in debt for 30 years, until you die or something (why they call it mortgage)
  • Living with parents (that's what I do, and I've come to terms with it, but they won't live forever... unless I somehow undo death, cuz I'm gonna do it, I tell you)

I dunno. :massive_shrug:
I'm back from my holidays. :-)
As far as that tradition goes it's pretty much the same in Germany. I have rented an apartment, but I earn enough to get somewhere eventually. I just hate taking debts, so I prefer paying rent instead even though debt goes away eventually (if all goes well).

Third friend online from Germany, yay!
Yay, it's a small world, isn't it. ^^

I think maybe that's a real estate agent's euphemism for "There's a lot of immigrants in Germany (and Sweden) now, so you won't likely find any real estate deals, but the prices are great at OUR end because demand far exceeds supply! Yay for us!"
Eyup, the immigrant/refugee problem is definitely related to this problem, too. But what can I say? Rich white international industry bosses require new african slaves and anyone who is against exploiting them is a racist. And yes, we do still have actual racists in Europe, too, and they're the ones who get all the attention from the media. Because the media is partially controlled by politicians and they love their rich white international industry bosses. Europe is in turmoil right now. Not as much as America or, you know, actual war zones, but still turmoil.

Yeah, ok, that sounds like it's far too expensive. I mean, not even I am confident in buying a house for that much right now and my hourly wage is about twice as high, every week. Granted I do have rent and stuff, because I do live by myself (42mē, one bathroom and one bedroom/living-room), but still. I keep reading that there's real estate bubble right now and rents in cities explode (here in Germany), so I feel as if it's currently the worst time to buy a house.

Honestly, I could probably tell her to just buy a cheap property, and get a tiny house.  It really is just her and her parakeet. Sure, it's nice to think of a spacious 3 bedroom with and entire room for her bird, one for her, and one for guests. But come on.  Are you going to have guests often enough to make it worth paying 3 bed price when you really need 1 bed and an art room?
Yeah. That's my opinion, too.

I mean, does she even have enough cash to seriously consider buying a huge house with 3 frigging bedrooms and 3 bathrooms? Because if so, she really can just rent something small to get away from her current situation and take her sweet time (living off her savings) to find a new job and save up for the house again. And if she doesn't have that kind of money, then she'll be in for a decade-long life of debt, possibly losing everything, including the house, within a few agonizing years of law-stuff.

Also her guests can sleep on a convertible couch or bring a sleeping bag and a therm-a-rest something.

Well, if someone swallows frustration for a long time, at some points they explode and make choices that can turn out to be very bad. Big choices like the choice to move somewhere should ideally be made with a calm and collected mind. And rent in a city tends to be higher than in towns. And cities tend to be noisier than towns, so unless the noises of specifically her family are the problem, then moving to the city won't change that for the better at all.

But maybe she's just fed up with having to be an unpaid(?) nanny? She could try nannying part-time for other families and get paid, if she likes nannying in general. I mean, ultimately her sister's kids are not her responsibility. Her sister + husband made the choice to have two kids, so if you make kids you gotta take responsibility, like it or not. And if she ends up moving away they'll have to take responsibility anyway.

So, are they ever going to mention that the sex happened to save Polly from getting raped 19 more times?
And that Polly got into this situation to save Bern from getting raped 1 time?

Because I kinda can't really take this whole conversation seriously, given that background. Not simply saying it is SUCH an Anime-ish thing to do and it was vexing every single time it happened, no matter which series.

Well, Maytag, it's difficult to make a 3rd wheel feel welcome, especially when you're with their crush. I'm surprised you don't seem to realize that yet. Or are you playing a different game now?

Maybe she's sensing that Polly is withholding something about her relationship with Bern (namely the rape-thing) and decided to prod Polly until she'll burst it out.

I don't get why neither Bern nor Polly said that they had sex to stop Polly from getting raped. I know that doing so would ruin a drama climax Brion has been working towards for years, but character-wise I just don't get it.

They slept with each other, because some rich person paid them to do it as an alternative to Polly getting raped for 20 days (or rather: for 19 more days).

Hehehe, Maytag is finally making her move. I just love it when someone asks penetrating questions with an innocent smile. :-* I wonder if Bern warned Polly ahead of time.

I wonder when Crest returns to them and tells them something like "Um, you know how the Phalanx protecting you is supposed to be stronger than ever by now? So, yeah, here's the thing about our most recent mission.... well, to use a euphemism: I'm their second most competent leader after Q'talda now, followed by Regina." 8)

As to people saying this is a dead end, well Eye can go outside (better) and May has a secure house and travel with Bern. Hopefully, at some point, Eye while not losing her power can contain it.
Yes, but I meant regarding finding out some secrets of this world, because that was the whole point of going through Dark Cell.

Sooooo.... this whole ordeal with dark cell led to what exactly? I mean, I'm happy for Eye to finally be free, but aside from that, was there a point in finding out what dark cell is? Kinda feels like a dead end, unless e.g. the conclave manages to inspect the dark storm and find out some things. It would be nice if they could finally do something useful.

I hope Mary has more luck in the pit. And that Suspiria can come back. That'd be another useful thing the conclave could do if they're powerful enough.

Oh, so THAT's why Moby became a part of the conclave. They're going to be SO disappointed at her character growth.
