Flipside Discussion / Re: Chapter 51: Discussion
« on: Today at 12:52:24 am »
Suspiria has been shaping the world like a god, so as a writer it must be really difficult to not make something look like a Deus Ex Machina. I mean, the characters are currently dealing with someone who has the powers to create random Deus Ex Machinas all over the place as if they were in the Matrix and they need to figure out how to deal with someone like that. I think it's legit to assume that Crest's sword received an ultimate attack because of that.

While I do prefer Maytag and Bernadette over Crest, I also do prefer Mary and Suspiria over the others, so I'm perfectly happy with this arc. :) Okay, Mopey is still alive, but you can't have everything. At least Glyph died. 8)

Also note that the anti magic sphere broke after the monster tilted the ground, so if the monster was created by Suspiria, then she did it despite the sphere being there. Therefore, she might've influenced Moby and the gang, too.

That is one way to get the post count up really quickly.  ;D

So, what was the highest number that was ever reached?

Eh, he has been alternating hope and despair on a page-by-page basis for the most part after the monster lifted the ground. :P
Right now I'm just sitting back and waiting until he's done with the curveballs.

I think on the next page the monster should stab Moby, like it stabbed Crest back then. Or maybe Regina. Yes, Crest would care about Regina more than about Moby I guess. We need more dead people.

Okay, that is an easier explanation indeed, but I am willing to give her the benefit of a doubt, because if you turn out to be right, then all the things I listed above make her and the others look SO bad. Until now I enjoyed saying that the Phalanx is just there to get worfed, but this screw-up would go above and beyond anything I dared to expect them to fail at.

Hahaha, I love the Teen Titans Go comparison. That seems to be all the Phalanx have left without the Conclave and without Kin (except for Qtalda of course).

Free Talk / Re: The Chat Thread

I understand the appeal of a Discord server, but I think it's too chaotic to keep up a thread of conversation for days or even weeks. Since everything goes into one channel, any kind of smalltalk quickly makes deeper discussions get swamped away, especially when memes are included. Whenever I open Discord and go into any of the servers I subscribed to I see "100+ new messages", so I just ignore all of them. Discord is nice to have a quick smalltalk, like IRC back in the day.

Having Disqus or something similar below each new page would be a nice compromise between Discord and a forum, because you can always choose to respond to specific comments, so there is some order in there. Also Disqus makes it easier to see which page a comment refers to.

A forum is more suited for comics where each page creates 100s of responses, like OOTS, Erfworld or GrrlPower (though the latter doesn't have one), because in those cases a lot of insightful speculative threads are created in addition to reaction threads as well.

But something like a chat thread could easily be moved into a Discord channel.  ;)

Okaaaay... this is an interesting development. I am curious how Brion is going to get his characters out of this one. Maybe some help from the outside? Maybe it has something to do with the time-loop Melter can apparently do?
But even if that isn't the case, seeing that revival is possible in this world I can't rule out that Crest is actually going to die.

I'm going to stop reading your posts now. ::) Until I'm up-to-date with Gunnerkrigg.
I'm allergic to spoilers, regardless of whether or not I know the context.

Nobody? Not even Moby-fan sunphoenix? This is the thread where I contemplate that it might not have been her fault that she screwed up the mission in the worst and stupidest way possible.

Yeah, Crest, this isn't Fairy Tail. ::)

Also I shall not read the previous post, since I'm still quite far from being up-to-date with Gunnerkrig. I'm at page 448 by now.

That is a fascinating reveal. I didn't question the legendariness of this sword, simply because Bernadette has two super swords as well and because it has been established that magic can be anything you like.

Thanks for the links, but I think I shall prefer to read it from the beginning.

I've been thinking for a while about the scene where Moby snapped at Suspiria and Crest and pushed them both over the edge, and the more I think about it, the less sense it makes. She sounds out of character, like a bitchy teenager, probably just like how Suspiria remembered her from school. She could of course theoretically still be that way, but there are a bunch of reasons why this isn't normal for her under the circumstances:

1. Isn't she a Phalanx soldier? Don't these people have professional emotional training to deal with difficult situations, e.g. staying focused in the face of death, but also staying forcused during a mission, if not all the time?
2. They knew that they were powerless against Suspiria. But they went on this all but hopeless mission anyway, with one goal: Support Crest to give him an opportunity to talk to Suspiria and maaaaaybe she won't kill everyone. So, what are you not supposed to do? Yell at Suspiria. And what else are you not supposed to do? Yell at Crest. And what else are you not supposed to do? Lose your shit while being inside a dangerous room that nobody was supposed to enter, ever, while also being in the presence of Melter and Bloody Mary. Did Moby realize any of that? Nope.
3. Why did nobody stop her and make her regain focus until shy Regina dared to speak up? Regina's not Phalanx, right? I don't thinkg that Phalanx training makes you stupid. I prefer to think Suspiria bent reality so much that nobody was able to stop her in time?

Thus I can only conclude that the anti magic sphere didn't cancel out all of Suspiria's influence. Maybe for Crest, because he was holding the thing, and maybe for Regina, because she held it right before (so the reality-bending had to start over for her), and Melter held it the day before (and possibly Mary, too) but not for anyone else.

I know I keep making fun of the Phalanx and the Conclave for looking like incompetent buffoons almost all the time (except for Qtalda), but Moby outclassed everything I've read so far by a rather large margin and nobody had the sense to intervene. That can't be right. I mean, until now the stupidest thing I've read a Phalanx do so far was Glyph eating the poisoned sandwich before he made out with Bernadette in the pool. I believe that an elite soldier should've been taught about poisons and how to analyze food, but that was merely a rather large mistake that can happen if the guy prefers to analyze women over analyzing anything else. I guess he was also caught off-guard by the fact that the hotel seemed like a nice and safe place. A stupid and big mistake, but nowhere near the mistake of losing focus in the worst danger zone they've ever been in.

So, what does everyone else think? Was Moby herself or not? The sphere likely comes from that continent where level 6 sorcerers are relatively common and the thin man should be rich enough to afford something of adequate power. Did Melter analyze Suspiria's power by himself or did the thin man paint the answer and Suspiria has gone beyond level 7 by now?

What? The main character develops? Inconceivable! :o

But I suspect that his current bravery is because of either Suspiria regaining her world-shaping influence now that the sphere is broken or that music-based spell is still in effect. Or both. Crest is probably going to take something away from this, but I don't think he is going to keep up being that smart, brave and clear-headed under pressure.

Japan is a beautiful country! I've been there once, too. Enjoy yourselves and don't worry about us. I am currently reading about two dozen web comics and I have a bunch of other hobbies as well.

If Gunnerkrigg is that good then I might as well read that one to pass the time.

Do I need to add that? I thought I covered that with my quoted statement. Unless you wanted me to write "killed Crest as quickly or faster than it did away with Buzz".

Whether or not that thing knows, I guess we'll find out. Either way it's not scared of the sword. But if immobility is really going to happen to it, then I don't believe it knows about that ability, because otherwise it would be stupid to let Crest get so close.

Flipside Discussion / Re: Chapter 51: Discussion
« on: October 17, 2018, 08:10:01 am »
If that thing were scared it would've killed Crest as quickly as it did away with Buzz when he dared to play that song that made all the skeletons disappear.

Oh well, I guess we'll soon find out how immortal that thing really is. Let's see if that sword can do this to him:

Flipside Discussion / Re: Chapter 51: Discussion

Yep, ever since that sphere broke and that dude played the song he reverted back to being confident. But I'm still not sure if he reverts to becoming Kin again, because he looks more emotional than in the previous chapters.

Btw: I just remembered that resurrection is a thing in this world (from the prison arc where Bern's not-girlfriend got fatally poisoned), so if the crew goes to the bottom of the pit, maybe they can take home the remains they may or may not find. But meh, they're just Phalanx, so who actually cares? ::)

Flipside Discussion / Re: Chapter 51: Discussion
« on: October 16, 2018, 04:44:24 am »
Looks like that thing is enjoying itself seeing its food struggle. I don't have any other explanation as to why there aren't any more spikes coming out of the walls or skeletons coming from the pit. There should even be two new ones available by now. 8)

Also if the sword's healing power doesn't work, then maaaaybe paralysis will do something? I mean, if the whole pit is powered by that thing, maybe the rotating blades will stop and everyone can drop down safely and explore it?

Okay, now that we know there's no way out the situation looks positively dire. Soooooo... another space-time-rewind, Melter? How about taking Suspiria with you through space-time and letting the "Phalanx" do another "investigation" that'll let them return empty-handed?

Welcome back! Also: Nice avatar! ;D

Oh that's why it seemed somehow familiar to me. I reread the archives recently, but I had already forgotten about the Demons of the Vorpal Sea thing again. And this I didn't think of the cook and the priest as demons either, even though now that I think about it they do both behave sort of like Hierophants. I.e. except for get "you get terminally ill if one touches you" thing.

Alright, things are really starting to look up now.
Next page: Regina or Moby gets stabbed and Melter's friend has to start all over again.

@Bulma: Oh, I didn't know magic was that specific, but I guess it makes enough sense. Was her carpet eaten in this chapter? Because if not then I'd wonder why she didn't have a bunch in reserve.

Flipside Discussion / Re: Chapter 51: Discussion

Moby, why do you say you're no good at flying magic? You have a flying carpet and you did carry yourself AND Crest in search for Suspiria.
Also: Why didn't you bring it with you? Eh, nevermind, the Phalanx in general didn't seem to think about bringing all kinds of magical gadgets with them.

Okay, Lehm not actually getting true answers is a possibility as well.

What does "demons of the Vorpal Sea" mean? Google doesn't appear to give me anything that makes sense in this context. "Demon of the Sea" was apparently another name for "Moby Dick" (which is a funny reference to flipside btw. XD) and the Vorpal Blade from DnD can decapitate on a crit.

From the points you're making it gets more and more clear that in a comic where you don't know what's actually real, literally anything could be the case.
But at least we can stick to the knowledge we got from intermissions, e.g. that an increase in levels means that you don't get more "mana", but your efficiency at using your soul energy increases.

I recently had a thought: Assuming that all the people from the sources I'm going to quote tell the truth:
1. Dissolving tests for sorcery levels 4 through 6 are supposed to keep you firm on your emotions, yourself and reality in general:
2. However, the thin man says that reality is a lie. (I don't think I need to quote any page, because it's pretty much all he says all the time).
3. And Suspiria said that her power feels like she got rid of constraints, see last panel of

That makes me assume that those high-level dissolving tests have the purpose of "keeping you in the matrix". Imagine you're in the matrix and unknowingly take the red pill and suddenly you can do neo-like stuff and have no idea why. Of course that would be terrifying and you might become insane and even bend your body out of shape, so naturally people would create tests to counter any of those effects. However, those tests sound as if they're a huge effort to strengthen the constraints you actually might want to rid yourself of.

I suspect that Brion did that because 36 was a double-page.

Yeah I understand that. I was just mainly wondering where the rest of the rather large following is, i.e. whether or not I am missing most of the action. I mean, the Patreon following is doing quite well and I assume that the total number of readers is typically about 100 times the paying followers. Also Brion rarely visits the forum lately.
