Compulsory National Service
« on: March 26, 2009, 08:52:28 pm »
Here's the scenario:

It's 2011. The United States has passed a version of the Universal National Services Act requiring all people - men and women - between the ages of 18 and 42 to perform national service. This service can be in the form of strengthening the homeland defense, rebuilding infrastructure, public service (police, EMT, firefighting), or military service.

Would you willingly serve, begrudgingly serve, protest, or fight (sabotage actions, join a paramilitary militia, or turn to anarchy/terrorism)? If you do serve, where would you choose to serve? If you protest or fight, where and how? Why would/wouldn't you serve?

Personally, I don't know what I would do.

Let me state at the front that I do not like this country (the United States, in case you're confused), but I cannot legally leave (I have been denied a passport several times now, all of them citing security concerns, then referring me to DHS where I'm stonewalled). I have my reasons, and don't want to start a debate about it. So with that in mind:

As someone who is basically trapped here (lol, I'm not taking a boat to Haiti, kthx), I feel as if I would be a slave to the political class of this country - being forced to serve the betterment of a country I cannot consciously support. I might be one of the few people pushed to an extremist agenda if this were to happen; but, I also value my own life and want a better future for myself and my family (the rest of you, as far as I'm concerned, can fuck off and die). So, with that in mind, I might choose protesting ... of course, I'd feel silly just standing around, yelling about something as mundane as "rebuilding infrastructure" when this isn't protesting a draft so much as it's protesting something Washington DC will spin as "the betterment of America."

In my eyes, I'm not rebuilding a country so much as serving a political classes agenda. In my eyes, it's the new slavery.

Ultimately, someone like myself might choose sabotage - working on infrastructure, while repeatedly fucking things up in an attempt to waste money.

How about you? Thankfully, with something as complicated as this, there's no wrong answer :)

Depends on just what and the other circumstances, and how much it would interfere with my life.
As long as I still get to be with my friends, and as long as they aren't screwed over by this, I'd be okay with it, depending on just what they make me do. I mean, if they're going to pay me for it, fine, I'll work for them, as long as some kind of net gain comes back to me.

Although if it screwed up my life, like conscripting me into the military, or forced me to go be slave labor in Alaska or something. or if that happened to someone I care about, fuck it, I'd go terrorist. If my life is already screwed over, may as well get vengeance on the Man.

I honestly don't know what I'd do I have a habit of assuming I'm gonna do one thing. But as soon as that time comes I freak out and make a 180. I guess I would have to say I'd just join the military, then probably get kicked out due to mental instability short time after.

Or maybe I would just get a passport and move on up to Canada, I've often wanted to go live in Canada and become a citizen.

On an unrelated note wouldn't this be better suited in "The Debate Room"?

Compulsory National Service; somewhat akin to Compulsory National Schooling, and most people are fine with that.

Personally, well it's almost always better to volunteer than be volunteered and I don’t have any particular issues with freedom that it would destroy – slavery to an employer, slavery to a government. It’s the same deal, just different masters and different jobs. You rarely get a free choice of job anyway though and this seems to cover a pretty broad range.

My issue comes with it decreasing the quality of services though. I don’t want some kid who’s being forced into national service watching my back when I’m tryin’ to kill people or going around arresting people; I don’t want him as an EMT. If you don’t choose to do those sorts of jobs freely then you shouldn’t be there, except under a few very rare circumstances.

I think the point is you get to choose which service you do, but you have to choose one of them.  I don't think I'd object to this.

I've all ready served my time and got a medical discharge but it would be a good idea to get the teenagers off the streets and get some discaplne back.
What good is dreaming it if you don't actually do it?.

I would serve in the military again, but I don't think they would let me. I was discharged for clinical depression.  :-\

Well, that law of itself is pretty much how we've had it in Sweden for some 90+ years. Though it has now come to an end due to politicians using the defence forces as a cash-reserve for the last 30 years. As an Idea, I support it wholeheartedly and I'm very upset about what our politicians have done with it. My main reason for supporting it is that I see the compulsory service, especially the armed branch, as a democratic failsafe mechanism.
An army consisting of the people can never be used against the people and is more likely to remove corrupt political leaders than follow illegal orders. It is also a lot harder to motivate a conscripted army to fight in foreign theatres unless there are universally just causes to do so.

Oh mai! I made it to my 5th week of training in Navy Boot camp. In Seperations, I decided I REALLY wanted to come back into the Navy next chance I got.. So I wrote a big letter to the CO in recruit handwriting, fully explaining what I enjoyed about boot camp, how big I felt being starboard watch, and how much I'd like to have the opportunity to return to the Navy when I could.

The whole legal process kept me there long enough to graduate boot camp TWICE. It was worth it. I have met sooo many people, witnessed and have done funny things. I want to go back.

The CO accepted my request, and changed my code to RE-3E. Which means I can get back in with a waiver.. HOORAH! *happydance*

Yessum! Indeedy I did. I made it to the week of training where they fitted me for all the different types of uniforms... while the sailor uniforms were as white as you could get, and garrison hats were in style.

BUT... say goodbye to those traditional whites. The Navy has now updated their uniforms to tan shirts and black pants, with cunt caps. I would NOT look sexy in that!

The great thing about the military is the shape you get in. I wish I could go back to when I could run a 14 minute 2 mile and was 50lbs lighter and had the first six pack I had in my life.  :(

Those were the days...  :(

Daw... My husband has gained 30 pounds since joining the Navy. Me? I've always been 110-120 soaking wet. I've seen MANY different body types showering in the Navy. One lady was as little as I, even though she had a child and I didn't. She had a six-pack, I didn't. So it all depends on what you've had go on in your life, how active you are, and how important having a certain body type is to you.

Whatever you're most comfortable with is best. Me? I eat slowly until my tummy says 'no more!' That doesn't mean I'm in shape tho. I danced to 'Cotton Eye Joe' last weekend and my legs hurt for days..!

Well, what do you think of my serious on topic post a bit earlier then? I did my compulsory service in the Swedish armed forces for 10 months as a squad-leader/Comms specialist in a medium-heavy mortar platoon. After that training I'm enlisted on stand-by, just like every other Swedish male and some females above 18 and under 45 that's completed their compuslory training. (the service is volountary for women but now it looks as if the whole compulsory system is beeing scrapped)
