Tainted Lucre (Sci Fi RPT)
« on: July 30, 2011, 03:52:36 pm »
Planet: Haverly's World
System: South Beacon
Eco Index: 30 (last reported, current estimates are high 20's)
Population: 18.7 Million (last reported, suspected to be falling)
Political Alignment: Sol Sector (Growing pirate tendency)

Haverly's World was just on the wrong side of collapse, there was still wealth left to buy equipment to attempt to stabilize the biosphere and the ignorant masses were not yet broken enough that they were still able to force the government to waste that wealth doing so. Sadly such worlds were the majority of the customers for independent traders like Captain Veriss' ship the Lucre.

Down on the world there were riots at the spaceport as people realized that a ship heading outsystem was in orbit taking cargo. People were offering life savings for passage to a world that was not dying, one without huge droughts and dust storms that completely erased entire tracts of formerly fertile farmland. One without periodic famines or chronic water shortages. A world without the explosion of insects that fed on the dead remains of civilization.

Stephen Colblatt sat strapped to his chair watching the monitors. The ship was currently attached to the large transfer station in high orbit around Haverly's so was unable to spin for gravity. "Captain, mail has arrived. Without delving into the filter, you have about 70 marked urgent. One is from the system governor asking a private meeting. Want me to dump that one with the rest or shoot it over to you?"

"If the message from the governor looks like it is a copy-paste, then don't bother... Any word about the goods?"

Being captain wasn't entirely as Dentsul had imagined. All these unimportant things bombarding him. Thank the Gods for other people so he could dump it over on them. In-system trading had become more tedious lately and he was dreading even the next stop.

"Doc? How many people do you think we could get on the ship safely?"

He hoped to God not many. If at all any. Passengers required demands. Demands would then have to be met. A logistical nightmare. Food, water... And not to mention air and living space. At least they loaded and unloaded by themselves.

"It's a...polite request for the captain and crew to meet with him planetside. Judging by the riots downside he's probably going to try to buy his way outsystem with the planet's treasury. The mudfeet seem to be blaming him personally for the weather and taxes." Stephen shunted the letter over. "As for the cargo, no new news. Some trucking delays slowed a few batches but it just meant our guys on the ground are loading a later scheduled shipment now. Biggest problem is how the fuel price is getting raised every fill-up."

Dentsul toyed with a pen in the microgravity after reading the letter. Spinning it in the air and finally launching it across the room, aiming for the noteboard on the opposite wall. It struck and fastened itself to it. "Magnets. You got to love them..." Dentsul said to himself. He looked down at the letter again. Tapping his finger on it a couple times finally reaching a decision. "What can it hurt listening to his proposition? We could always decline. At best this could be a cakewalk with a lot of money involved..."

Veriss looked up into the roof above him. Studying his favourite little mark on it. An area with a little darker shade than the rest of the roof. "Lets go meet this governor and see if it is worth doing then. We leave with the next shuttle."

Snorting, Stephen dismissed the idea of going. "Eleven point six? Scew that gravity." ((OOC: Referring to the meters a second per second that gravity is measured in. Earth's is 9.8)) "You should take that Mari kid with you though. Getting out of that machine shop should do her some good."

Ahzek had just begun comparing the med bay inventory list to the present supply and the list of med supplies being loaded on the shuttle planetside when he was interrupted by the intercom light flashing.
''Yes captain, with the projected supplies incoming we should be able to support five additional adult passengers without any kind of rationing, seven at a stretch. Was that all sir?''

((OOC: Let me know if any of this post is an issue Stormin and I'll fix, just liked the idea of Mari fixing something in zero gravity and being able to move all around it rather than just having it open on some bench somewhere))

Mari delighted in the freedom of zero g that each planetfall bought, being able to move anywhere she liked without the restrictions imposed by the ships simulated centrifugal gravity whilst in flight. She was in one of the ships Exterior Access Maintainance Bay, something that appeared large on the ships schematics but when full of it's usual cargo felt considerably smaller.

The walls were lined with recesses each slightly larger than a person, each one intended to contain one of the ships Zero-G Exo Suits, a simple mechanical apparatus designed to help the ships engineering crew with any emergency repair jobs that required a spacewalk.

In the middle of the bay floated one of the rooms other occupants, many of which lined the racks that made the room feel so small. It was considerably bigger than a person and looked like some strange mating between a large insect and half the Lucre. A short cylindical body ended in a large sphere containing the thruster pack that allowed it to move in deep space with a number of joined legs emerging at the other. One of the ships Exterior Repair Drones, none of which currently worked.

The one she was working had been half-dismatled, various parts floating nearby as she moved around it, over and under adjusting something here, removing something there or re-attaching a part she had previously removed.

At one point she pressed two wires attached to a small power-pack to some of the contacts within the drone and one of it's legs gave the slightest twitch. Mari tutted and then reached out and stroked one the few panels that were still attached, in a calming way.

"It's ok," she told it, "I'll make it better."

Stephen signed off his station and waved off to the captain as he left the bridge. Technically by law there had to be two on-duty officers at all times with all interstellar ships but this world was past caring about such things. There was only one other starship in the system, an Earth Force cruiser which was just sitting point six AU from the local star watching that the world did not become a pirate haven as it collapsed.

His first stop was one of the old munitions bays which he had converted into a pen for his rabbits. A clever feeding and cleaning system maintained them while the crew slept the months between stars and the fresh meat was very welcome during drop-in, after the crew awoke but a week or so before the ship actually docked at station.

Seeing everything was fine he took the tethered shuttle to aft section and went to the airlock for Maintenance Bay Aft Two. Donning the half-mask which would supply his oxygen in the neutral gas environment he went in and found Mari hard at work. "Hey kid, still poking these relics?"

Mari gasped and clapped her hands over the drone near where the leg like structures protruded.

"Don't listen to him" she told it.

She floated back over behind the drone and emerged slowly and cautiously from behind it looking nervous. She carefully kept her eyes away from Stephens own, that sort of behaviour got you beat.

"N..Not.. Not poking.. fixing" she told him. Her eyes darted nervously to the machine shop door then back to Stephens chest. She swallowed, "We need these, if he gets injured in trans-light then," she patted the drone with a small smile, "very useful."

"No need to get defensive kid, just coming in to check up on you. I noticed you haven't been pulling any ashore time this port. It may be a dump but you should go out and relax a bit. You worked this run, you're entitled to the same share as everyone else." Stephen meant the ship share, a portion of the after expenses profit for the run that was split among the ships crew. "Captain's got a meeting happening with the local governor so you're on the next shuttle down regardless. You may as well get your papers done up and make a stay of it until we are ready to pull out."

Mari's eyes went wide.. "No, no, no. He wont like that, not without him, not safe."

She looked terrified for a long moment, then a sudden realisation struck her, Stephen had said she was going regardless and she had just told him... Mari cringed, waiting for the blow to come.

"You've been with us almost a year, nearly a month uptime (OOC: means awake time) and you're not gonna be a kid forever. You need to enjoy yourself while you can. Go planetside, buy a fast car, break a few laws and get bailed out of jail.
"I don't know what sort of prison barge you and that other guy were on before we picked you up but this ship is pretty loose and any one of us will cover for anyone who gets in trouble. And speaking of trouble, I got you some lunch." Stephen held up a small vac-sealed bag with Korean writing on it. "The blue box is some sort of sweet peppered fried ice cream. Surprisingly good and since you never left the ship you must be sick of rations and rabbit at this point."

Mari reached out and took the bag with a quiet "thank you."

Tugging it open she extracted the contents, leaving the contents to float around her and began to cautiously eat, pulling the occasional strange expression as each new taste assaulted her pallete.

Aleov was tapping at the console. Looking over all the buttons and functions.

"Man. They say it's like ridin a bike! What the fuck kind of bikes do these people even have?"

The shuttles console had several lights flashing everywhere. Aleov begun studying them one by one. At last he found the one he was looking for. He flipped the switch and sound emitted from some speakers.

"Traffic control... Fantastic. Does these pilot folks not listen to music at all?"

Aleov flipped the button back off as the captain entered the ship.

"Nope. We don't. One day you will understand why. Everything set?"
"I guess so. Just waiting for the rest of the crew. Who is staying with the ship?"
"Just Steven. The governor requested our crew, but someone has to stay on the ship."

Aleov strapped himself into the seat and swung his legs on top of the console. Dentsul flinched with a look of disapproval before asking if Aleov had turned on the security systems of the ship.

"I armed all the explosives if that is what you mean?" said Aleov and grinned. "Neh. They'r all up and running. Steven should be able to handle everything else."

As the rest of the crew begun strapping in, Aleov smiled one of his wicked grins and said "Hold on. The gravity here is heavy. You are really going to enjoy this one!"

The meeting place was a hotel called The Silver Grand which overlooked a horrific swamp. Inside the windows showed the area as it once was, a beautiful park. Weather patterns had changed it though and decades of near constant rain had killed what it hadn't washed away.

Inside was in good condition, automatics were handling everything with almost no human staff to oversee, probably the main reason this place was chosen. The governor was an overweight looking man flanked at both sides of his chair by a pair of guards in light exo armor. Since not all of the crew spoke the world's primary language of French there was a translator device set on the table. "Gentlemen and Ladies, please be seated. We have much to discuss."

Raize strode into the room with Mari following close behind, he glanced at the fat man sat behind the table and then the two guards flanking him, nodding to both. His eyes flicked around the room looking for more armed men.

With very deliberate motions Raize unslung the spike-gun from over his shoulder and placed it on the table in front of one of the chairs with the barrel running along the table so that it was pointed at neither the governer or the Lucre's crew. The two sidearms he also carried in his belt he kept hidden under his long leather waist-coat. Turning to look at the door for a brief moment he nodded to the others then pulled out the chair he had placed his gun in front of and sat down, once seated Raize kicked out the chair to his left.

"Sit down girl," he said without taking his eyes of the governer.

Mari climbed into the chair Raize had kick out for her and sat there with her knees under her chin and her arms wrapped around her legs watching a blank spot on the table.

((OOC: I kind of imagine Raizes Spike-gun to be something like a shotgun that fires long metal spikes - about the length of a hand wrist to finger-tip))

Ahzek and Torgal took their seats opposite Raize and the girl they still didn't know by name. They both nodded to their hosts and the other crew before sitting down. In transit, Torgal had concealed his earth force marked interface body glove with an old jumpsuit found in a locker in his cabin. He wore his sidearm openly on his hip and the vibro bayonet in a boot scabbard.
Ahzek had gone seemingly unarmed.

"Right down to business." The man spoke, the translator repeating his quick words into something understandable. "Ten years ago my predecessor hired an independent ship to acquire certain items that projects he was overseeing required but he could not obtain.  During the time getting the items this ship was forced to orbit an uninhabited star for a period of months. During this time the crew found a rather interesting thing.
"An Ark ship, seemingly abandoned." The Ark ships were star-roaming cities. Some had populations nearing a hundred thousand. "A lack of proper equipment prevented these men from exploring the ship to any extent but they did report that the manufacturing centers were still intact.
"Sadly my predecessor was unable to arrange a deal with these men for the location before they were lost on another expedition. I discovered this information some years ago and had the star's location calculated. After that I had to wait for a ship I could hire to explore the ruins and see if they can be brought here."

Aleov stopped tinkering with his fingernails on the mention of an ark ship. Looking up at the governor, then at the captain, and then back. Not the most common item to stumble upon. He couldn't really imagine why anyone would abandon one without reason either. They weren't the smallest pieces of equipment.

The captain raised his eyebrows, looking across the table to the governor.

"So what I am guessing is that you want us to go look at this thing to see if it is safe?"

Exploring an abandoned city. Not just a small town or anything. A city? A place that would have several thousand inhabitant. Completely abandoned...

The captain leaned back in his chair, flicking his eyes back and forth between the opposing party. This wasn't the best idea he had heard of...

Torgal leaned forward, adressing the governor, his artificial jaw and vocal cords giving his speech a tinny tint and his lips moving slightly too inflexible.
"Seemingly abandoned you say, what kind of evidence supports that notion?"

"If there were inhabitants they would have attempted to contact the ship. The Ark was also tumbling. The rotation was unstable, something easy enough to correct even on a ship weighing those millions of tons. The radiators were also dumping too little heat, the main powerplant was either on standby mode or had melted down and was still warm but there was no evidence for any of the inhabitants.
"Without the tumble, the captain would have tried docking his ship. His shuttle was not in condition to make the trip and he was busy with his own issues at the time. And as I said he never had a chance to return."

"You will be paid expenses plus 5% for the trip there and back. If the Ark's manufacturing facilities are intact and recoverable there will be a substantial bonus." The man slid a piece of paper across the table. On it was written a very large number followed by the sign for Midgard Energy Marks, one of the most stable currencies still in use.

"As for the details of what you need, I do not care. You will sort those out yourself. The one stipulation is that one of my men accompany you. He is an engineer trained in everything known about Ark ships of that era and will assist in the assessment as well as ensure that my interests are taken care of."

Raize picked up the piece of paper, glanced at the number before tossing the paper back on the table again.

"That's a lot of numbers," he commented, "so what you reckon Chief we takin' this job?"

Deep in the bowls of the vessel Gant tiredly extracted himself from a intake duct and walked over to the com box wiping his hands on a cloth rag,

"Bridge, propulsion. Do you hear me bridge? I've found the cause of the P1 Pressure Ratio loss in number one Booster but I need Mari back here ASAP to get it fixed.  Where is she anyway? Out."

Not waiting for a reply Gant walked away from the box muttering under his breath how propulsions were easier to understand than humanoids.  For some reason This was one problem Gant had not been able to easily track down.  It had turned out to be a cracked blade in the stage one compressor unit causing flutter and loss of Pressure into the combustion section.  It was not easy to fix and would take some hours to repair and test and he needed help to get it done.

Private Frazer Naylor was not looking where he was going only behind him for signs that he was being followed.  Sweat was starting to form under the head strap of his helmet but he did not care, the only thing he cared about was getting away, he did not want to be here in the first place since he was part of a conscript Battalion the dregs of society.
Since there was no signs of pursuit from the Military Police that were attached to his former unit Frazer slowed down and caught his breath and ease the stitch that was forming in his left side.   He found himself outside a hotel called the Silver Grand.  Seeing no one around Frazer cautiously walked through the doors hoping to find some thing to eat and drink but instead of finding the kitchens he found himself in a room full of people and one of them in the uniform of a Senior Sergeant of the Regiment he had just deserted from all Frazer could say out loud was,

"Oh Shit!"

Stephen answered Gant's call. "She's planetside with the others for the meeting. I can call in some temps from the station if you need a hand right now or the repair can wait until she gets back. Whichever you prefer, it's not like we can spend this system's money anywhere else so even if we have to pull the whole thing we might be able to buy a replacement."

Catching the last part of Stephen's message Gant walked back to the Com Box he growled,

"Oh great so you're left in charge! I feel better all ready! Tell you one thing if we had not plotted a course through that dust cloud getting here we would not be in this mess for I found half of it clogging the filters.  Find out if you can get some B rated Mechs here with three ceramic concentric compressor fans or better yet a complete stage one compressor unit for a Alpha 4B propulsion.  I'll be checking the hydraulics starters if you need me, out."

"That wasn't dust, it was an invisible space unicorn we hit. Please don't let Mari know." Gant was quite a joker. Both of them knew how physics worked. At 3 kilometers per second an impact with a solid object had the same energy as that object's weight in TnT. Hitting an actual dust cloud at any real speed would have blasted away anything not protected by the ships heavy front armor plate. Anything that went through the plate would have gone through the rest of the ship in a clean path.
"If you want to wait, I can contact the captain to see if he's willing to hire some A rateds for not that much more. We won't be able to get high end parts but the people here are pretty hungry for work so the labor will be pretty cheap for the quality we can get."
