Sci-Fi Roleplay Discussion/Signup
« on: June 14, 2011, 08:33:16 am »
The year is 3216, mankind has spread across 600 light years of space and colonized hundreds of worlds. Linking these worlds were vast and robust trade routes populated by merchants, wanderers and explorers.
When the problems first appeared they were considered a minor statistical anomaly, slightly more new worlds had failed or were failing in the previous century than the one before. This was not a big deal, Terraforming was not an exact science even then and the problems were assumed to be due to errors in the process.
As the rate of failures of new worlds increased more established worlds, being overwhelmed by refugees, closed their ports and the lifeline of trade broke down. Systems began to band together where all were once independent and tensions rose eventually leading to the great war of 3170 where Sol Sector and Midgard battled leaving one world uninhabitable and several others with severely damaged ecosystems that have yet to recover.

The great trading companies have all disbanded and the trade routes are owned solely by privately owned traders, the great City Ships and pirates operating from dying systems.

The Lucre is an ancient relic of a ship that was rebuilt from a Titan gunship, a class disbanded nearly 400 years ago. It's crew survives the old trade routes using whatever means necessary to continue.

Anyone interested in signing up post below. Every player will have 2 characters, one for on the ship (a bridge crew sort-of) and one for ground missions (an away team, sort-of again)

Positions that need filling
Bridge crew:
Captain
Doctor
Engineer
Scanners: (This is the spot I'm taking. Since I am going to be directing this RP I do not want a leadership position)

The ground crew will need people who know how to use weapons, people who can break locks as well as those who can treat wounds.

Characters:

Stephen Colblatt, Navigation/Scanners ($tormin)
Mari Lairde, Engineer & Raize, Away Team (NightWraith)
Ahzek Namirha, Physician & Torgal Aumudssen, Away Team (Emp_Dragon)
Tentsul Veriss, Captain & Aleov Tanrak, Away Team (Brekkjern)
Mitchell Gant, Engineer & Frazer Naylor, Away Team (Oddball)

I'm in when I can come up with something... the "ship" character proving a tad tricky at the moment (cant decide how/where I want them to fit into the crew).

Well preference is that the important spots get filled first.

Some more information.

The Lucre is just under 400 Meters long and is somewhat barbell shaped with the main fusion engine at the back and two long rods leading to the crew compartment up front.
back  D===[D  front.   Something like this in layout.
Cargo pods are connected to the two shafts which are the ship's Linear drives used for faster than light travel. Unloaded the Lucre can FTL at 30 hours per light year, sometimes pushing it to 27ish hours.

Note, this does mean travel times can be months or even over a year. The crew goes into hibernation during this period usually, not cryosleep but more of a drug induced coma. A special gel immersion and electro stimulus keeps the body from losing muscle mass during this time of inactivity. A side benefit is that you can set your desired fitness level and you wake up with it. If you wanted to drop a few pounds have the doctor set your hibernation rig to put you at the desired weight by the time you wake up.
As a bonus this means that between episodes all injuries that can heal will be healed. Broken arms will be fully functional, etc.

Stephen Colblatt
Scanner and Navigation
Age: 61
Description: Dark almost pure black skin. No body hair. Thin legs and arms with oversize torso.

History: Stephen is a native Martian. The Terraforming of Mars was never going to be completely successful so the original colonists decided to have their offspring genetically engineered to survive the improved yet still hostile environment.
Stephen's family had a history as tectonic engineers but supported the schooling path he chose as an interstellar navigator. In the 40 years he spent at the job Stephen served on seven different ships.

One or two more people and we should be good to go.
A bit more info for everyone.

Pilot Episode: Ghost
In exchange for rescuing several prominent politicians from a dying world the crew of the star ship Lucre are given the location of a previously unknown wandering ship whose crew died centuries ago. They discover looting the dead can awaken an unliving horror.

Kind of work in progress still...

Not sure about the exact histories at the moment, trying to get Mari in a "not wanting to be with Raize but stuck with him as she's no where else to go" kind of situation, maybe play on that kind of tension if/when the opportunity arises.

Mari Lairde
Engineer
Age: 16
Description: Short and slight, round face, hair hacked short (we're not talking anywhere near a proper cut here) primarily dyed a mixture of black and blonde with the occasional tuft picked out in a random colour.

History: Mari has spent her entire life in space, born and raised on a small trans-steller freighter called The Star Voyager with a small crew consiting of her parents, elder sister and a few others. As a result much of her childhood was speant learning to operate and maintain the small ship, due to the fact it was an old ship and the crew was basically poor she has learnt how to repair things with very little, at least enough to get to the nearest starport. When Mari was 12 The Star Voyager was attacked by pirates and some of the crew, including Mair, were captured and sold as slaves. Mari to the then captain of the Blood Nova where she worked in the "engine room" due to her already impressive engineering skills.

Raize
"Away Team"
Age: 45
Description: Tall, average build, bald apart from some stubble around the ears, unshaven. Has several scars including a long one that runs from his chin almost to the top of his head just missing his right eye.

History: Raize is quiet about his history prior to joining the crew of the Blood Nova however he has been with the pirates since he was 15. About a year ago the ship was caught in a firefight with a rival gang and although the Blood Nova and most of her crew escaped her captain was killed. The man who rose to take his place, Jonas Aram, took the crew down a much more ruthless path, determined to make all other pirates in the known sectors fear the name Blood Nova. Soon Jonas's sadistic treatment of other pirate crews they caught operating in thier space began to be extended to any ship they captured. This didnt sit well with Raize and he began to look for a way out, realising he would need help and that the crew were not likely to offer it through fear of Jonas he soon recruited a reluctant Mari who was beginning to be noticed by some of the crew.

With her help he stole one of the Blood Nova's fighters and they made a run for it, after spending several months moving from planet to planet and attempting to hide they eventually joined the crew of the Lucre.

Humans only in universe. There's signs of two prior interstellar civilizations 100,000 years and 200,000 years before, possibly a third even older. No supertech, apparently none of them advanced further than current human technology before vanishing for an unknown reason.

Because of genetic modification the average lifespan of a spacefaring human is 180 years.

Piracy is generally supported by worlds whose ecologies have completely crashed and whose governments no longer have the capital to support their populations. In exchange for safe harbor and repair facilities, Pirates generally capture terraforming equipment and star ships for these governments.

Core Worlds:

(Note: Eco Index is a measurement of how habitable the world is. 15 or less means that people have to live in enclosed cities.)

Planet: Earth
System: Sol
Eco Index: 87 (note Earth as of 2010 has Eco Index of ~77-81)
Population: 5 Billion
During the age of trade Earth was one of the biggest economic powers in the galaxy but following the wars and the collapse it's influence has withdrawn. Population wise Earth is still the biggest world and the most habitable, but the vast majority of the population lives in enclosed cities leaving the rest of the world as essentially a large garden or park.
Earth has 3 space elevators to the Halo allowing easy transport of goods and raw materials in trade.

Planet: Earth Halo
System: Sol
Eco Index: 0 (artificial habitats)
Population: 1 Billion
The Halo is a system of habitats in Earth orbit that maintains it's position as the major industrial hub of Human space with nearly 40% of humanities heavy industry.

Planet: Mars
System: Sol
Eco Index: 20
Population: 100 Million
The first Terraforming project, Mars is largely considered a failure. The project is still ongoing when many other outsystem worlds were completed in the timeframe of centuries. The inhabitants of Mars who can exist outside of the sealed habitats are heavily genetically modified.

Planet: Midgard
System: Norsca
Eco Index: 35
Population: 1.7 billion.
Midgard was one of the first planets colonized and one of the first Terraforming projects (still underway). Currently considered the capital of the "Corporate Sector" worlds.

Ok, then here comes my characters

Ahzek Namirha
Physician
Age 132
Description: Tall, muscular, yet lean build, reddish skin, almost like a bad sunburn, a tightly woven jet-black pony tail otherwise shaved head and piercing almost glowing blue eyes. Commonly wearing a black body-glove under a bright red supplice trimmed with white and the marks of his proffession embroided in gold on the upper left of his chest.

History: Ahzek's long career began well before the great war as a corporate biomedicine research assistant, his part of the bio-med R&D division focussing on prosthetic limbs and neuro-digital interface development. As he progressed through the company ranks, he felt a stronger calling to practice medicine where it was needed, not only inventing new extra and replacement bodyparts and control interfaces for the super rich and various military entities. Come 3148, he decided to leave his latest position as chief bio-med researcher and found himself enrolled on a deep-space exploration vessel named Future Ascendant The assignment tried his medical skills to the limit with all kinds of injuries diseases and poisons encountered by the crew both in space and while exploring previously unchartered planets assessing them for colonization. However, as the great conflict loomed nearer, their mission was cancelled due lack of funds and the crew was disbanded and assigned new service stations on other vessels. In early 3169 he was thus assigned the job as Chief medical officer on the Glorious Terra A planetary assault capital ship of the Redemption class.
When he considdered injuries of the kinds encountered on the exploration mission was bad, he was soundly humbled by what he encountered during his  12 years on the Glorious Terra. Towards the end of 3181 things changed on the ship, moral dropped and frustration increased due to combat fatigue, it had been nearly a full year without any kind of leave rotations and both the quality and quantity of supplies had been worse for each resupply stop they had undertaken. Eventually, the ship and assault force officers of the Glorious Terra and her escorts and support vessels, after weeks of deliberations, issued the order that changed Ahzek's role along with everyone elses. From then on, the assault force was tasked with supplying the battlegroup with captured supplies, effectively turning a once proud and honorable fleet into simple pirates. This sat even worse with Ahzek who started to join the rear of the assault force, looking for means to escape. A week ago, he succeeded, trailing on a security team on a captured and supposedly secured merchant ship he and the security team was cut off as the furious and desperate merhcant captain scuttled his own ship, triggering explosives that incinerated everything in the cargo and personell blocks and severing the ship just in front of the engineering block, leaving engines and reactor intact but out of fuel and drifting. Automated blast doors sealed most of the air inside the compartment where Ahzek and the security team's seargeant occupied as the team was heading back into the cargo blocks. They lived, but were cut off and assumed dead by the fleet. A few days later, with life support failing, the derilict engineering block was found, by the crew of the Lucre

Torgal Aumundssen
"Away team"
Age 54
Description: Slightly above average height, compact muscular build, the man is almost as wide as he is tall. Unusually pale skin, colourless hair in a typical seargeant buzz cut. Bionically replaced lower jaw after a 10lb shrapnel took most of it off. Likewise replaced lower right arm after a hangar bay accident involving an exo-load lifter and a missile rack. Commonly wearing an olive green armour interface body glove to save the fuel of his exo-armor. Always armed with at least a vibro knife/bayonet if able.

History: Torgal was one of those who got pressganged into a fighting force and then discovered he was good at it. By 29 he had made seargeant the hard way, and when he got his lower jaw mangled beyond recovery by an artillery shell in an assault on the capital of Golgotha V a few years later, the brass deemed he was useful enough to get a replacement. That's how he came to meet Ahzek. The old man might dress odd and have weird ideas, but damn if he didn't know what he was doing with a scalpel and tissue glue. Eventually, he did run out of luck though, after the accident in the cargo bay a year ago he got retired from the first wave and assigned a security platoon while his new right arm healed properly. Unfortunately, the companies didn't make things the way they used to with the lack of high quality raw materials, at least for someone like him. So the new arm had glitches. most of the time it acted up it was simple enough to just hit it in one of the right spots, but lately it had been more stubborn and he decided to take it up with 'the old witch doctor' thus when he was about to show Ahzek the problem, the ship blew and they were in worse shit than he'd ever been. When the Lucre found them, he figured that he could just as well tag along with whatever Ahzek was going to do. After all, he needed the old man's skill and knowledge as long as his arm was acting up and when he could get it fixed to work properly, he could always decide on a different course.

Hurr! I looked at this a couple times and thought "Not now. Too much other stuff going on." and then I got time to do it. And now the only position left is the captain and I don't really want to play such a significant role :S Not in the first roleplaying game I join...

It is mighty tempting to play "Picard" though...

And Picard would be a bad role model for the captain of an independent trader that has to stay on both sides of the law to operate.  ;D

While I think up a character or two, can you give us a bit more information on the universe and the ship?

What I want to know about the ship:
- How many crewmembers?
- How many function as away teams?
- How many shuttles do we have?
- How good are our sensors?
  - Can it see if a ship has power?
  - Can it see if a ship has oxygen?
  - Can it see if a ship has armed weapons?
  - Can it see if a ship has shields?
  - Can it detect lifesigns?

Universe is just whatever. Political parties, military, worlds and so on.

1. The ship was originally designed for a crew of about 50 people. After being demilitarized it can run with a crew as small as 4 people running watch on shifts. During Acceleration and Deceleration as well as FTL flight the crew is in a chemically induced coma, so there has to be one fully trained medical technician and preferably more than one backup. The smaller the crew the more jobs everyone has. When docked the cargo handling requires a lot more people, if the crew is too small to handle it Teamsters will have to be hired.

2. In an away-team situation at least three crew members should be on watch at all times onboard ship. Captain, Scans and Weapons/Navigation.

3. 2 Shuttles. One is able to enter atmosphere and return on one tank of fuel IF it is carrying low mass on the way back up and did not do much maneuvering on the way down. The other is ship to ship only but can land once, serving as a lifeboat.

4. The optical scanners are good enough that they could find a candle on the moon from Earth orbit provided they know where to be pointed. No magical life-sign sensors or anything and shields don't exist. A ship running powered will be putting a lot of heat through it's radiators so we can make a good guess if a ship is running hot. Military ships have a lot of thermal storage ability so they are a lot more stealthy, but even they put out a lot of heat when moving.

The ship is armed with 2 uprated Masers and 200 missiles. 100 are nukes, 50 are bomb pumped lasers and 50 are defense drones.

Political situation was put a bit higher. Not outright war between major powers but a few 'wars by proxy' and the navies of the major powers are always interested in preventing piracy and refugees problems from getting out of hand. Since pirates generally operate from failing worlds anyways, a few times that policy has led to orbital bombardment of all surface to space facilities and destruction of local shipyards and other off-world infrastructure.

Well, NPCs don't really need a character in this sense. They can just be "soldiers" that are there and perform various tasks. As a captain, I would not be sending 3 people onto an unknown space wreck without some form of backup. Be it rearguard, pilots or whatever.

It is up to you though.

If you want to hire NPCs, run it past the crew. Don't forget that it means they get a smaller share of profits.

Mkay. This will do for now. I can always flesh it out a bit later.

Captain:
Name: Dentsul Veriss
Age: 103 years.
Description:
Slightly round. Claims it is because the electro-stimulation does not work properly. In fact it is more that he likes the shape. Thinks it gives an authorial look. His hair is beginning to gray. Distinct brow.
History:
Served in the Terran navy in the beginning of his career. Achieved the rank of sub-lieutenant. Worked in communications and logistics and lastly as a navigations officer. Eventually got fed up of the navy life and decided to find a trading ship to live on. Veriss  got a position as communications on an interstellar trader which got destroyed by pirates on its way into port from a FTL jump. Veriss escaped without injuries, but had to find a new ship to join. Thus he ended up on the Lucre as logistics and later became the captain.
Dentsul originally came from a middle class family living on the Earth Halo. His family designers of the ships being built there. He had no wish to become an engineer and rather dreamt of exploring the universe.

Away team:
Name: "John Smith" or Aleov Tanrak
Age: 34 years.
Description:
Fit, average frame. Scarring on right side of head from various chemicals, explosives and shrapnel. Blonde short cut, but missing some hair on the front right. Partially blind on right eye. Caucasian. Mostly wear some form of uniform and body armor.
History:
Aleov joined the military when he was 17. Enjoyed the life, but got too much attention on himself because his love for explosives. After a small accident killing 2 of his squad mates he got dishonorably discharged. He then searched around for opportunities for work and joined a small pirate gang which eventually joined Blood Nova. He later fled from the ship because of another accident detonating parts of the armory thus not getting a good reputation amongst them. After a while he found work with a few mercenaries and then joined Lucre. Mostly introducing himself as "John Smith" because of his bad reputation among both pirates and civilians.

Favors knives, suppressed sub-machine guns and explosives. Is known to use a bit too much explosives; just for dramatic effect.

What about weapons tech? Since we've an ex-soldier and two ex-pirates I'm guessing both of them are going to be armed (Raize certainly wouldnt go anywhere without a gun or six) Are we talking projected energy weapons or are we still using solid mass projectiles?

3. 2 Shuttles. One is able to enter atmosphere and return on one tank of fuel IF it is carrying low mass on the way back up and did not do much maneuvering on the way down. The other is ship to ship only but can land once, serving as a lifeboat.

I don't know if you want to add Raize's "borrowed" fighter to that list or if you'd rather he had ditched it before joining the crew Stormin.

On a side note for a trade ship there's a distinct lack of any kind of trader on the away team... I'd imagine we'd have one merchant who would be setting up the deals and such with the rest of us as bodyguards?

Sorry night, had forgotten about the fighter. It can still be around, but it does have to be stripped to strictly below military spec.

As for personal weapons. Still chemical fired projectiles. Slight improvements over today's weapons though. Lasers and Masers require huge power sources and are not man portable in the power output required.

Only original and completely trusted crew members will know this but there is a cache of highly illegal military spec gear and weapons only 50 years out of date hidden within the hull of the ship including several suits of combat powered armor with coilguns. These cannot be found even with an extensive search unless the ship is disassembled in the process.

I'd say Torgal prefers the rugged feel and kick of a projectile weapon over most energy weapons. With something akin to an FN 'five seven' (Automatic pistol fiering armor-piercing down-sized assault rifle ammo) as a sidearm when onboard or in 'peaceful' settings. while carrying something considderably heavier while fully armored, possibly even some kind of support weapon he wouldn't even try to handle without his exo-armor, like a military grade missile launcher or light autocannon (~15<20mm)

But his heavy gear that could likely get the ship/crew in trouble would probably have been stripped from him as he and Ahzek was taken aboard while unconcious, right?

Energy weapons are vehicle or ship mounted only as I said. For his gun, he can go as heavy as he can fire, considering the limitations of his body. Even with an artificial arm something with enough kickback will separate it from the rest of the non-artificial body.

So Yes on a heavy semi-auto but no on recoil-less gyro-jet ammo with depleted uranium armor piercing cores. Those would be milspec.

As far as exo-armor goes, I think it would be able to support far heavier weapons than what is man-portable today, and considdering he was armed and armored to milspec. when found, the gear he had would probably be hidden by the original crew or ditched out of an airlock to avoid unhealthy attention if some kind of inspection had found them onboard.
And when I say hidden, I include Torgal in those who would be completely unaware to where the gear would be.
All he remembers is that a few days after they were sealed-in in that severed engine bay by the blast doors, he and Ahzek drifted into unconsciousness due to failing life-support, and then he woke up in the medical bay/ a spare crew cabin on the Lucre some time later, dressed only in his underwear and the exo-armor and other terran military gear he wore when passing out would be missing.

Sorry night, had forgotten about the fighter. It can still be around, but it does have to be stripped to strictly below military spec.

Ok, well let me know if this is ok:

2 seater craft, armed with a single Stormpulse cannon (think mini-gun that fires energy coated bullets) and some kind of directed EMP generator - with the intention of the fighter to get in close to enemy ships and disable them the cannon is merely for dealing with what little Drone/Fighter defense other ships may have and the EMP for disabling engines or other key systems so the target ship cant escape. (unless the Lucre has a good supply of ammo it's going to be running pretty low on firepower) It's also capable of both stelar and atmoshperic flight (else he couldn't really of gone planet hopping in it)
