A bonus for initiative, but points off for lack of dignity.

Do they have to repave the floor after every set of trials?

Lol.  One certainly hopes so.  And they best use bleach.

Well it doesn't look like he shattered the floor in his ruin.. she didn't kill him after all!

Mop and sponge.. good as new!  So what if there is a stain left ?

'The stain provides a warning...'

Think before you put your body in motion... or suffer for it!

I can see how those would be bloodstains but they kind of also look like he was firmly embedded in the floor

Oh Polly!  Your love is so unconditional and total... :)

...but you don't have to die to protect Bernadette!

Anyone ever thought of tying up the tester with her own chain? I'm sure that would qualify for an "S" ranking, as it would take a hell of a lot of agility, speed, and concentration to pull off.

I see what you did there. Question, why did they NOT confiscate Polly's "ball" when she was arrested?

Same reason they did not confiscate Class C idiot's knives... their here to fight!  I expect Bern has her twin swords as well.... too bad she did not find the enchanted matching one.

given past experience, this will be a difficult encounter, especially when chain weapons are typically designed to disarm bladed ones in these kinds of fiction

I would conjecture... since I have been trained to fight and defend myself with a sword, I would tactically always keep my blade tip pointed at the opponent in as perpendicular 'straight' at the opponent as possible.  Unlike the traditional use of a sword to keep its length semi-paralleled to your body so it serves as a zone to block similar incoming blades attacking in slashing arc.

Fencing uses a different principle as thrust are more common.

My point being you do not want to give the chain a chance to wrap around the length of your blade - so keeping the blade as horizontal to the foes as possible is the best way to avoid the flail weapon getting a grip.  Unfortunately this reduces a weapon to only thrusting attacks at the foe and 'almost' make it worthless to defend with... or should I more say Very Tricky to defend with against flail weapons.

Flailing chain weapons were meant to counter the use of shields as the length can bend around the shield and still his the defender.

Unfortunately all bets are off with this chain woman's weapon it can do things no chain weapon can do and acts almost like an additional limb itself. No real world chian/flailing weapon could entangle a flying sphere of metal and arrest its forward momentum.

I'm not sure if this is Bern getting cold feet or one of her ploys to get her opponent to attack first gone wrong.

Nah, that's not what I'm getting.  Bern is a fairly straight-shooter... meaning  - 'she says what she means and means what she says.'  Not that she can't be cunning in combat... just usually when she says something she speaks from how she is really feeling... you always know what she says is honest and heartfelt!

Its one of the things I so love about Bern! Not to mention she's dead sexy! :)

I agree she meant everything she said, but Bern knows she doesn't have a choice but to compete in the Colosseum and that Polly is also counting on her performance . Using a morality plea was probably the best option she had to get Warden to attack first, since Bern knows nothing about her. She also looks genuinely surprised that Warden just walked away.

I think Bern believed she was going get attacked either way so she tried to use her genuine morality to get her opponent to strike first, but if given a bit more time she may have made the first move given the stakes of the situation.

With that said, it could have been a honest stand against what she was being made to do. I just think Bern can be more cerebral then people give her credit for.

Bern's not an "attack first" combatant anyway. Her entire sword style is based on "perfect counters." I don't think she could have gotten a better rank even if she HAD fought. At least she managed to avoid injuries. Oh dear.

Any takers on "Mary" making an appearance?

I don't think attacking first would ever be her first choice, but like in fighting that healers body guards, she has shown to make the first move if the stakes are high enough. This is all moot at this point, as this seems to have been cold feet, like sunphoenix said. I do think she would have at least matched that one guys rank though.

I kinda have a feeling Suspiria has figured out what Qtalda did with Mary and may go meet up with her, either to recruit her to fight the thin man or get revenge for Kin. I'd be most surprised if she shows up in Bern's storyline first.

There might be an issue with D class fighters as well.  Like maybe they have to go up against the Mary clones or something.

Or...being the lowest rank... pits her against lower ranks of challengers.. but for less return/value out of her victories...she has to beat more of them to get very far on her 'owed' debt to the state.

Of course that means... Bern will have an easier time... at least at first - cause we ALL know she a Good Fighter.  But she may face charges of "sandbagging" for lower challenges.

Meh... we'll all know soon enough!

- Anyone think Polly will survive the story arc?  I mean she OBVIOUSLY loves Bern unconditionally... can that kind of relationship be sustained with Bern and May being a 'exclusive' item?

I hope she does, would like to see her interact with someone other than Bern.

I think she'll survive the Colosseum, at least, I imagine they'll get out before the months they would have to spend fighting to do so otherwise.

Actually, the "bodyguards" both drew steel and swung first. Sure they had the right to "escort" or forcefully remove Bern from the shop, but they did NOT have the right to employ lethal force.

As for the "fanservice," I have to agree with Bern. Those costumes are WILDLY impractical for any sort of real fighting. I'm not talking armor class, I'm talking, "oh look, the damn thing fell off!" If I'm visiting an arena to see a fight, especially if I'm making a wager on the outcome, I DO NOT want the participant's clothing becoming an issue to hinder the fight.

I don't mind "stripperific" outfits in general, and if they were practical in the arena, that would be fine. But IMPRACTICAL stripperific outfits are a no-no. Any spectator who thinks differently needs his head examined. At least the warden is equal-opportunity regarding gender, so can't fault him on that.

We read that sequence differently then. They definitely were the ones to bring the swords out, but I wouldn't say they swung first. The first guy pointed his sword at Bern (I don't think this counts as employing lethal force) and told her to leave, but her grabbing the sword and kicking him is the start of the physical altercation. The second guy, who was about to pick up Grant, swung at the same time as Bern.

As I recall, the man pulled his arm back and swung the sword at Bern's head. She caught his arm and tripped him to take the sword away. At that point, Bern was more than qualified to demand compensation.

As for today's strip, the moral is, don't assume untested opponents are weak, and definitely don't mock them. You will regret it if you're lucky.

That part definitely didn't happen, the sword wasn't moving at all when she grabbed it.

I wonder how the Colosseum deals with a sorcerer/sorceress. Would they be allowed to use a weapon and sorcery or would they have to have to choose between one or the other?

Hmmm... well if you mean by 'threatened' force he... pointed the sword at her and she grabbed it, but not while it was in motion.  Not sure if that makes a difference to your points though?
