Wait, wait, wait, wait. No.

The States != Better than Canada.

Canada has legalized gay marriage, attractive currency, good public transit, better healthcare, tastier ketchup, real sugar in the soda, lax drug laws.

it's also legal for women to walk around topless in Toronto.

Debate room topic? *shrug*

The point is moot.  Australia kicks both their arses  ;D

hmmm, I guess it depends on what we're looking at as well.  For instance, in land America has more desert and better beaches.  Alaska covers most of the snowland benefits that Canada could try to claim over America.  For freedom and benefits for the people, Akashayi pretty much listed all the benefits that Canada holds over the United States and it wouldn't surprise me if Canada has a far lower crime rate per head of population as well. For Badassery and technology America has a bigger army, space program, Area 51, border with Mexico.  Not sure on who could argue for a better parliament or government system.

I think for the most part Canada is better. Except it's fucking cold. But I think I would rather live in Canada for the most part. The only other thing that USA has on Canada is racial diversity. When I was there there was only whites and Native Americans (Canadians?). Kind of depressing, IMO. Especially because I have a sick sexual fetish for Asian girls.  :-[

right but he managed to start a discussion about a really useless and potentially derisive (if we weren't so sensible and laid-back) topic.  However, he may just have been boasting about the outcome of a sporting event, in which case it's probably all in good fun.  Would be nice to mention the event though, if that's the case.

"Free health care" downplays the fact that if you ever need something more than a check-up you're probably gonna have to wait a few months.

Then again...that's what the US and its obamanomics are becoming

Average wait times are pretty similar, actually, with Canada's being a bit longer.  Don't forget that there are wait times in the US too, especially if you need to see a specialist.

I don't think this is a bad topic, really.  Nothing wrong with living here and having the opinion that other countries are better.  Which country you think is better is obviously a matter of priorities, if military might is important to you than obviously you'd go with America.  Or maybe you just prefer the culture of America.  Personally I don't know anything about the culture of Canada so I prefer America out of ignorance.  But I have to admit that Canada does seem to have advantages, less crime, better health-care, and all the other things that were mentioned.

It does seem like it'd be annoying though how all the signs in Canada are bilingual.  They are basically forced to be bilingual by their govt, where as in America we are gradually heading that way just because of the free market.  It's funny how Republicans are supposed to be small govt and supporters of the free market, yet when the market pushes the country in a direction they don't like they try to use govt force to stop it and keep English the national language.

I think America is a pretty good country compared to most countries, it's just that there are some countries with freedoms that we don't have.

Which is kind of ironic since America is all about Freedom!TM

Still, Canada doesn't need a military. No one would ever invade Canada.

Well if Brion says it's ok...

The overriding factor for me is that Canada is, in general, too cold.  Same sticking point I would have with living in Vermont, however, which I think is probably a pretty excellent place to live.

(and I know the summers are beautiful...I'm talking about the winters)

When you start comparing with the world in general, both are pretty amazing countries in many ways.  Europe is plenty awesome too I would say.  Everyplace has its ups and downs I suppose.

Canada and the US are such similar places though that they are often compared.  I dunno, Canada's politics seem to make slightly more sense.  Culturally I think they're pretty similar, except perhaps that Canadians I have met seem to have, on average, less attitude than Americans and in general are easier to talk to.  Less of an urgent need to prove that they are important and unique human beings I guess.  Americans are always checking each other out socially, like "What's your cool and awesome thing?  And why haven't you asked about mine yet?"  Like each person needs a selling point or brand identity.  Am I off-base here?

edit: what are the freedoms that other countries have that Americans don't have though?  Oh right, gay marriage.  Ugh yeah that should be such a no-brainer (legalizing it).  But yeah in general America still has a lot of freedom, at least of thought and expression.

What Can I say? Separation of Religion and state is important, unless you separate yourself from Religion, in which case you can GTFO.

To me as a foreign observer, the US effectively doesn't have separation of religion and state.

Since non-issues like gay-marriage, abortion and contraceptives/sex-ed among others wouldn't cause as much debate if they had a legal system that ensured secularity of government and administration.

Regarding the first post in this thread, I'm pretty the poster is talking about hockey.  However, the Canadian women's hockey team already has a gold medal.  After the gold medal game for the men's team tomorrow, perhaps we can boast that the U.S. is better at hockey than Canada.  On the other hand, we're leading in the overall medal count, even if Canada has more gold medals at the moment.  Not that I'm entering the debate, since I'm not an expert on Canada.  Although, if you care about that sort of thing, their television and radio are uncensored.  I know this from my senior trip to Toronto with choir, and the DJs were swearing on the radio (as well as playing uncensored songs).  Plus, I was watching TV in my hotel room, and it was showing the train sex scene from Risky Business.  Also, Naked News  ;D!

Naked News... Is there any greater invention from Man-kind?

Gay-marriage is almost certainly part of the religion thing, mostly because the word marriage is so closely associated with religion. Not sure on Abortion and Sex Ed though.  Many of those arguing against abortion aren't simply religious fanatics but people who strongly believe in the right to life.  I think it'll be interesting to see how the debate changes when artificial wombs are invented *lol*.

America probably has the greatest sense of patriotism out of any nation, however thats part of it's problem as well.  They tend to think that the American way is the right way or the only way because of it and fail to understand that different cultures have and need very different systems to make them work.  The British understood this. Its why they were able to hold such significant power across the globe for so long... tolerance.

Actually, well, No.

Their theory went something like this
"Hello, Native chap! Do you have a flag?"
"No, what's a flag?"
"You don't have a flag? Then here, have this one."
"What's this?"
"Our Flag, chap. By the way, We own your country now, and by extension, you."

The English were not tolerant. They viewed everyone else who didn't behave like them, or speak their language as nothing more than savages, if they viewed them as human at all. This is the country that created the scientific consensus of the time that black people were in fact a separate species, who were essentially hairless apes.
Remember how they treated the aborigines when they arrived, and how long they treated them that way before being dissuaded?

They held most of the globe for so long with pretty much pure muscle. For a long time, there were very few forces outside of europe with their level of development and technology.

I think it's less separation of religion and state and the fact that so many people in America refuse to let it be that way. It's got a lot to do with the people being idiots.

Actually, well, No.

You'd think Charlie would know not to be brainwashed by good ol' Britain.
