Wait, what?!?
Dildo meant ever meant anything esle?
Weird.
The origins of the word "dildo" are unknown, but one of the theories is that it originally referred to a peg used to lock an oar in place on a small boat (which had a similar shape). This name may have also lent itself to the island and town.
The first recorded use of the word in English is
"Choise of Valentines or the Merie Ballad of Nash his Dildo" (c. 1593) by Thomas Nashe.
It also appeared in Shakespeare:
Servant: He hath songs for man or woman, of all sizes; no
milliner can so fit his customers with gloves: he
has the prettiest love-songs for maids; so without
bawdry, which is strange; with such delicate
burthens of
dildos and fadings, 'jump her and thump
her;' and where some stretch-mouthed rascal would,
as it were, mean mischief and break a foul gap into
the matter, he makes the maid to answer 'Whoop, do me
no harm, good man;' puts him off, slights him, with
'Whoop, do me no harm, good man.'
Not that you really asked, or it really explains anything, but there you are!
