Give Churba a New Tattoo!
« on: July 08, 2009, 03:13:06 pm »
Well, I'm thinking of getting a new tattoo. So, I'm putting it to you guys.

The Rules are thus -

1)Can't be too big - I'm not spending more than 40 pounds on it, because it would take too long to save up the money.
2)Nothing too complex.
3)Nothing too Horribly tacky. This may be excused if it's particularly funny.

And Go.....please?

My post in the flipside forum member roster and my truth hurts thread will be a good start for that.

Alright, some random facts to help that....

-I like Guinness
-I've been to many, many countries, and hardly met one I didn't like
-With a handful of quarters I've got more game than Will Wheaton
-I love Old school rock, hard rock, Punk, old-school hip hop
-Right now, I've got a body like a taller, more muscular Sid Vicious
-I'm a stand up comic as a hobby, and I love shows like QI
-I'm an utter gearhead, If it's got wheels, wings or a hull, I'm there
-I'm a Maker and Hacker, If you can DIY it(MakeZine or Hackady sort of style), I'm propably planning to do it at some point.

Well at first I was just going to say "smiley face" because it was the first thing to pop into my head. But I figured that was too uninspired. Then I noticed you posted some facts, so I chose to take those into consideration. I saw stack of quarters and thought "A quart? But no one wants G. W. on their skin." Then I thought, "25 ¢", but that would just make it seem like you're saying you're half the man that 50¢ is, and that's just pathetic (you're probably more in the twice the man he is range). Which interestingly enough works out to me a dollar. Thus, dollar sign. (OR, four quarters = a dollar, and that is a nice stack). I reincorporated my smiley face idea, for a personalized touch. The smiley also reflects the "happiness" brought on by a good stand-up comic. Then maybe add a gear design around the smiley for extra flavor, and you get something like this:

It was, admittedly, both a nerdcore hiphop reference and a reference to my love of arcades, but I love the way you're thinking, I'll put it on my shortlist.

I thought about it, but I'd customize it a bit first, it's a touch generic.

Yeah, there's all sorts of variation you can do on it.  I tend to be one who prefers simplicity in certain cases though.  Less to go wrong and instantly recognizable as what it is.

You should come to MakeZine's makerfaire out in San Francisco here, Churba. It's great fun, or has been.

Why not something like a golden spiral?
http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/loom/science-tattoo-emporium/?nggpage=18&pid=120

or the pythagoras tree?

San fran is a bit of a trek for me, so that might be a ways off yet - however, I did make it to the first ever UK MakerFaire in Manchester, it was a blast! I will be gunning to make it out to San Fran MakerFaire, though, the original and still the best - I still haven't seen enough of the city either, so I might make a holiday of it.

I really like that, it's on the shortlist - especially considering that I might get more than one at once.

That's a touch too complex for this one, but if you have a less complex version, It'll go on the shortlist.

That's true, I'll have a flick through my collection of flash and see if I can find one that resonates.

well, kind of:

What kind of diy/hacking are you into? There's also the symbol for a diode, that might be cool

well, kind of:
The third from the bottom is pretty cool, and the third from the top isn't bad either, My shortlist gets longer.

Basicly, if you can name it, I'm into it, However I tend more towards mechanics and larger scale electrics rather than smaller electronics like Arduinio, but I'm catching up on my small stuff out of necessity, some of my projects can't be realized without the smaller stuff, so therefore, I learn.

I still have the first and second projects I ever built entirely by myself at home in Australia - a 1.5 metre Classic Trebuchet, Wooden with a steel arm, and a 2 metre floating arm trebuchet made mostly of mild steel square tubing.

As for the Diode symbol, I'd propably go the Zenier Diode symbol rather than the Regular, and also, the AC Source symbol is pretty cool, thanks for the ideas!

What about standard, existing symbols from history, etc?

Like the celtic stuff?

Then there's the simple Asian language symbols:

And Runes (you sould have them in a spiral around your arm or leg):

I'll look through my flash and see what I can see - I particularly liked the lefthand one.

A good idea, but I'll have to decline that one. Go for something like "courage", and one small mistake later, I've suddenly got "Bean Curd".

Again, I'm wary of getting tattoos in languages I don't read or speak.

or the good old mitsudomoe
I'm quite fond of that one.

Hmmm....We've so many good choices so far. This may get tricky.

Shortlist so far -
-Smiley in a Gear
-A simple pythagoras tree
-Mitsudomoe
-Diode and AC source symbols

Investigating
-Animal Paw
-Celtic Symbol

That left celtic symbol is one of THE earliest symbols in the celts (actually it pre-dates them)

Quote from: some site
The triple spiral or triskele is a Celtic and pre-Celtic symbol found on a number of Irish Megalithic and Neolithic sites, most notably inside the Newgrange passage tomb, on the entrance stone, and on some of the curbstones surrounding the mound.

Believed by many to be an ancient symbol of pre-Celtic and Celtic beliefs, the triple spiral appears in various forms in pre-Celtic and Celtic art, with the earliest examples having been carved on pre-Celtic stone monuments, and later examples found in the Celtic Christian illuminated manuscripts of Insular art. The triple spiral was possibly the precursor to the later triskele design found in the manuscripts.

ALSO: Try this site with different combinations in the boxes to see what symbols catch your eye. http://www.symbols.com/section/6/category/15/

an animal paw with or without claws? and something with a change in color like a soft blending out on the sides or not?

there are tons of cool Celtic symbols. most of them have a meaning like love or good luck or good faith as such.
