I confess I feel like a horrible person because I know I wouldn't be able to love my kid if they were mentally disabled.

If it makes you feel better, I wouldn't love my kid even if they were completely healthy, beautiful, and smart. ...As smart as a kid can be, that is.

Yeah. Well, I'm not an unconditional love kind of person, so if my child turned out to be Not What I Wanted, well that's a problem. Hence, why I won't be having kids and if I have any fatherly urges that need to be fulfilled later on I will do it with children who have grown up a bit as so I can ascertain whether or not they are worth a damn as human beings.

So basically you're both saying that if you did have kids (for whatever reason) you wouldn't necessarily love your kids just because they're yours?  You'd only love them if they were or grew to be, someone you could love (much like any other person).

*shrug* makes some sense to me.  Effectively you're saying that blood relation doesn't automatically flick some imaginary switch to make you love them.

@CDSM:  So the closest you'd get to voluntary fatherhood is if you met an orphan who caught your heart?  *meh* makes more sense.

I confess I'm thinking of becoming a carer for abandoned/rescued dogs.  I like the idea of caring for a couple of muts and seeing them off to a good family each time.  I get a know them, teach them some tricks and then see them move on before getting a new dog with a different personality and going through it all over again.

No, I'm saying I hate children.

He was quoting me, actually.

But I do hate children. Until at least a certain age, and possibly beyond, I see them as "sub-human". Which is an opinion I am not able to express to my current friends.

What do you mean by supposedly? Do you mean people who say it but you don't believe them because they tend to say that kind of thing often?

Quite frankly each time is going to be different, even with the same person. I dealt with this kind of thing a lot (Note: seriously I think people were confusing me with their shrinks) back in highschool, both people who were legitimately suicidal, and people who were "suicidal".

There really isn't any sure fire thing that works every time, but a few things that usually work would be:
1. Get them to laugh or smile, this isn't always easy but it's surprisingly effective.
2. Keep him/her talking, about pretty much anything, it'll keep their mind off of hurting themselves *generally* This also has the added benefit of helping you if you're doing this online, it'll keep you calmer because then you don't get those 10 minute breaks where you get worried sick because you have no idea what they're doing.
3. Physical contact seems to work really well in my experience, this of course varies from just sitting close to actually holding.

A few other random suggestions would be:
Know your subject, This is probably the most obvious thing, but using tough love when sugar coated coddling should be used can break down a good amount of work.

...actually I'm gonna stop it here because most everything else I would say would be extremely obvious and you probably know, and I'm probably starting to sound like a know it all tool.

That kind of stuff thing makes me incredibly angry, incomprehensibly angry.

There are certain topics you don't touch in a manipulative fashion, and suicide is definitely one of them.

I confess I was married to that person for several years and let myself be manipulated by it until it stopped having the shock value one day and I didn't let her get her way with it as a manipulation any more.  Several months of marriage counseling later and I've been in a far happier relationship ever since.

*meh* it was something that creeped in gradually and gradually became worse.  I have known her for 9 years and been married for over 5 of those.  Partly my own fault because I kept letting it affect me and thus it became something she subconsciously used since it was effective (never used it on anyone else).  You go to just about any relationship expert and they'll tell you to never let that stuff work or it'll be used again and again with greater frequency and degrees until you either let it go to far, break down and leave the person completely or you stamp your foot before it reaches a point where the behavior it too deeply entrenched between you to continue.

Ah, I see.

I confess that I really regret going as overboard as I did when I confronted the girl about it.

Then again I also regret not doing it sooner, meaning the second time she blatantly did it do me.
