Ouch. Well, the only thing I can say is: don't blame yourself. It's the psychologists fault she couldn't rise to the challenge!

Psychiatric medication is almost always nasty stuff, avoid where possible.

Find a new psychologist.

Just keep in mind that a psychiatrist isn't there to just tell you you're bat crazy or something.  They're primary goal is to help guide you back to a better state.  If you're seeing a psychologist then you obviously think you already have some issues that you need help with so think of this as an opportunity to get some better guidance on how to handle your condition and even overcome it.

I disagree that all psychiatric medications should be avoided.  If you've a permanent physiological problem then you obviously need to have it balanced.  If its only psychological then it's generally good at the start but further visits and following the advice of the specialist should help lead you back eventually to a point where they're not necessary.

However they are dangerous as well and it's important to follow the specialist's instructions as closely as possible, have a strong understanding of the potential side effects and what to do if they surface as well as contact numbers to the specialist and after-hours specialists in case of any other developments.

Good luck Selan.  I hope they can help.

I don't think anybody said that, everybody here has the sense that the second you are diagnosed with schizophrenia or DIDS or severe PPD or something  like that, that... the rest of what you said >.>;

I read what they were saying as avoid the over prescribed, as many many psychiatrists are very willing to pour pills down your throat when you very well may not need it.

I confess one reason I don't trust them is that they only have 6 months worth of  *minimal* training when dealing with these kinds of things. Granted I don't expect years or training or anything, but it's disturbing how little they really have to know.

I thought those were the psychologists who only had 6 months minimal training to prescribe certain drugs.

My granny worked in and around the field for most of her professional career.  Generally they can accurately determine the problem thanks to various tests, or with close consultation with the psychologists.  But response to medication can also be a great determining factor.  In many cases if they prescribe low doses of the medication to begin with and usually there will be a noticeable improvement if they've diagnosed correctly. There's also a range of different medications for each condition and while some can be easily identified as the ideal one, in many cases it really is just a case of trial and error to see which suits best.

The bad prescription cases she usually came across were with patients who had been prescribed medication early in the diagnosis, or had been through many different doctors who prescribed or altered existing prescriptions to achieve better results without having a full understanding of the whole issue.  The general reaction to this was to simply strip back every medication they could so they could re-evaluate correctly.  But the vast majority of problems they had weren't with bad perscriptions but children simply growing up and the body changing constantly, requiring different dosages or even different prescriptions altogether.

*meh* My Granny also had the advantage of working in a team unlike many psychiatrists who have to rely on only their own perceptions and knowledge.

What's scarier is that over here, a GP with absolutely no psychiatric training can proscribe seriously hardcore Psychiatric medicines, and quite a few of them have the mindset of "Throw pills at it until something sticks"
