Personally I think the first one looks better but, it's probably not worth spending so much more because you're gonna love the dog no matter what it looks like.

Yeah, I think so too... I was going for a german shepherd first, and the Tervueren is like a hairier version of that.

Just how expensive is so expensive?

How much of a differnce are we talking about here? And what is your budget? If you have pay more then you can afford, obviously get the one that is in your price range. Do you have to take out a lone? Miss your rent? Don't do that! But don't be cheap when it comes to your animal companions either.

Tervueren is about 900. Groenendael is 950 - 1000. I have about 800 collected, and the dog would be bought in autumn, so there's still time. :3

But I just found a Groenendael-breeder that is much closer to me. I'm going to wait and see how much she wants for her puppies, but it seems good! Mother-dog is gorgeous.

Go for the one you truly want.. don't look at money or distance.... What do you want?
If you can't afford what you want just yet... wait for another year or so... Don't rush a lifetime commitment.

(ok lifetime is excaturated but still)

Selan: Yeah, exactly... But it's not just that. The dog is going to keep me from getting lonely and freaking out when I move away from home. I have some... issues being alone.

Odd: Nah, they're both equally fluffy. Females tend to have slightly shorter hair, though.

As a previous owner of a German Shepherd from puppy to death, I can vouch for them as an absolutely wonderful dog.  It got hard in her later years as we watched her slow down with old age but I wouldn't trade the 14 years of her life she shared with us for anything.

I say go the Tervueren but thats probably just 'cos it looks more like a German Shepherd ;)  If you're in a fairly cold climate, you probably want the darker coat as it'll absorb more heat from the sun and keep him/her warmer.

Depending on what your issues are with being alone, you may simply want to head down to your local animal pound and check them out for a stray who seems friendly.  That way you don't have to wait for them to grow up before you feel secure.  Training is a bit more difficult at an older age but the old saying that you CAN'T teach an old dog new tricks is false.  Its harder yes, but they can still learn. (then again, you may have already worked this out and are getting the dog in time for it to be of reasonable size by the time you move out).

The other option you might want to consider is two dogs.  Double the security and they can keep each other company when you're out.  I know my sister had a dog when she was alone and it freaked her out sometimes when it chased shadows or noises that weren't there, out of boredom or because it got her attention.  With a second dog they'd probably both learn not to react to every little creak and squeek in a house with all the noise they'd make.

Eh, I don't know if I agree with that reasoning. The first dog I had was a rescue, a  Bichon Frise, which came from a household with 4 other dogs. He barked at Everything. My current dog, an abused rescue, came from a home where he was the only dog. He only barks at people he doesn't know and when people enter/leave the house (including us).

What you're saying is completely dependent on the dog... Maybe the breed too.

Also take this.

it's far too dangerous to go alone.

Awesome... that is all.

Edit: Just curious, why buy a puppy? I understand they're adorable but Charles does raise a point with the pound, it is much cheaper and whatnot. I personally cannot go into those places, it breaks my stone heart.

@Pozf: Yeah, you're probably right that its dependent on the dog.  That dog of hers just loved to bark. She tried every trick right up to getting one of those collars that makes a loud noise when they bark... and the bl**dy thing figured out a way to bark which wouldn't set it off! *lol*

Keaoden: The dog is the exact same breed, it is only the coat that is different, which is why I'm asking for help in picking the "prettier" one. Haha, it's getting more and more difficult to choose.
(There is also a short-haired version of the Tervueren, but that version is bred for hard work only. I'm looking for a companion, not a slave, so that had to be singled out.)
Also, funny thing is, that the breed that most people mistake the belgian for... Is the collie! Even my friend thought I was wanting a black collie mix. Odd.

Charles:
I know, German shepherds are lovely. <3 The reason I chose the Belgian over one of those is because while the German shepherd sheds pretty much all the time, the belgian does it twice a year... And I'm allergic. ^^;
I live in a cold climate compared to the rest of the world, but we have hot summers as well.
About getting a rescue-dog... Yes, I considered this, (my stepmother had a wonderful, gorgeous rescue-dog) and even went to my country's shelter-homepage looking at what they had. The problem(s) are that the shelter prefers to give out their dogs to stable -families,- not lonely students who live in an apartment by themselves. That, and stray dogs that have been treated badly may have all kinds of trauma and behavioural problems, and right now I'm not in the position to re-train someone who has the habit of biting everything it sees.
I also would like to get a puppy because that gives me the chance to train it exactly as I want from the beginning. Step by step. Puppies are like clay ready to be formed - an adult dog is like dry clay.

Two dogs is something I may consider later on, but I'm not going to put two large dogs in a smallish apartment.

Deatzh: Like I said, the dog under the coat is the exact same.

Pozf: Like I told charles, I want a puppy because that way I can train it as I wish from the start. That, and a puppy from a good kennel won't be traumatized by some animal-abuser.

Stats at the moment: Tervueren seems to be getting the most votes...

Is it a type of dog that need to have its hair cut? Or does it stay roughly the same length all the time.

because if it's the former it's classified as a dog with "hair"
the latter is a dog with "fur"
even though the two really are the same thing on a dog.

Looking at it probably has fur.

Once the dog is an adult, the hair will stay the same lenght. It does need trimming, as in lots of brushing and picking away dead hairs... But no haircuts.

I don't know very much about dogs, not so great with them. But I think getting the pet you connect more with is important when you're looking for a new friend.

Deathz: Like I said, the dog under the coat is the exact same.
What?
Also, DeatZh

Whoops, excuse me. Deatzh.

Yes. Breed is the same, and so their "personality" is the same. Of course every individual dog is different, but all breeds are supposed to have some traits, and well.. This is the same breed. It doesn't matter which one I get.

Akasha: Breeders rarely let buyers choose the puppy from their littler themselves. They interview you and then they pick the puppy they think would suit you the best for you. Good way of avoiding having inexperienced people get their hands on the toughest troublemaker of the litterl

Ahh, yes the German Shepherd sheds A LOT!  Ours was particularly bad but we originally got her in the far southern state of Tasmania here in Australia and then brought her up to the tropics of Queensland.  She was an outdoor dog but we let her become an indoor one after that climate change and she found the perfect spot just in line with the air-con.

I hear there are certain dogs who's coats are designed to be more woolen and are apparently good for allergies as well, but a dog that sheds twice a year is probably just as good.

I was going on more about specific personality than specific traits, but okay.

...And I'm not planning to surf around both kennels trying to figure out each puppy's personality, and pick according to that.  :) Bit of a drag to do it that way, y'know. I'm going to pick a colour, pick the kennel, and get a good one from those.
