Challenges

Okay, so as of late I've been looking for some kind of challenge... something along the lines of chess, but that is Not chess (obviously otherwise I would be playing chess ::)) Can anybody think of some kind of game or something, that may not be prominent or widely known in the states (or at least in this sheltered corner I'm forced to call home), but that is known in other areas?

Well I just blew through the basics on Wiki (found a rule set for it), looks interesting. Now I just need to find somewhere/someone to practice on...

OMG I hate Go.  But it's not necessarily anything wrong with the game..my friend who was just simply better at games than I was, and that includes all games, beat the hell out of me in that game repeatedly when we were kids.  It was so frustrating.  He just understood it at a whole different level than I did.

I hate that freaking guy.  (myself I mean)

You see, I was very...submissive I guess socially until at least college, so he always wanted to play and I always said yes, even though I hated it.  So, bad memories.

It's kinda fun but I keep getting STOMPED by the computer, that's with a 5 stone handicap on a 9X9 board.

Because I generally don't like to spend 10 hours on a game, based on .... wait for it... dice rolls. That being said I love DnD, different kind of dice rolls <,<;

Well yeah, I guess I do hate that, when I do hate it, which is sometimes.  Like, after the first half-hour or so...

Anybody like Stratego?  I like that game.  RISK just makes me think of it...

Speaking of war board games, Axis and Allies is good and has PC-based implementations.

I've only played Sratego a handful of times when I was a kid, don't remember it.

I have sworn off risk for the time being...since the last time I played we never finished after many many hours of going back and forth. Yawn!

I thought this was the challenge thread, not the board game thread :P If you want a challenge, I still suggest go. It takes study, and a good amount of effort. And you have to play people your own level, instead of the people who teach you. I've taken a few classes and been to a few tournaments, myself... but mostly I learned online and from studying professional games. It's not chess, and it's not well known here, but has a huge professional world in asia.

So there.

I've played RISK. Thought it was alright but not awsome *shrug*

Ok a non boardgame challenge?

How about learning to speed read?  Or find out what your current reading speed is and aim to improve it by 25% or some such figure?  Not just a challenge but very useful if you succeed.  You can then set yourself further challenges to read certain books you've been wanting to get through, within a time period (e.g. "The Hobbit" in 4 hours... or that school/uni study you've been putting off in 2 ;))

Actually I have finished The Hobbit in 2 hours. I read very quickly.

Although that definitively is an idea.

Well there are other excercises like memory improving ones.  I think the main one there is to list 20 items and try to remember them all.  So maybe see how many you can easily remember now and try to improve on that or some such garbage.

Basically, all the sort of brain training exercises.  But I could just as easily give you physical ones to work out how fast you can run/jog/walk 2 miles and work on improving that by 10% in a fortnight.

Well you asked for challenges, so I guess if your strong of mind but weak of body, th physical challenges should suit well.

Alright then, read a famous fictional book from each major genre.

Adventure - Treasure Island
Thriller - Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde
Horror - Dracula
Mystery - The Hound Of The Baskervilles
etc
