Flipside Discussion / Re: The Criticism Thread
« on: March 07, 2013, 11:56:50 pm »
Wow, haven't been here in a while.  2 responses, 1 critique:
I agree with whomever said putting specular highlights on the lips in black looks weird.  It did and it surprised me the first time I saw it.  I got used to it but I don't like it either.  And I do like octopus lips, too (Battle Angel fan).

To the really long wall of text discussion about the comic: I only read the first post, and that sums it up. I am kind of boggled how so much discussion and disagreement can happen when the critic has not even read the comic from start to finish.  There are parts of this comic I don't like / disagree with too, but I wouldn't Start Something without having bothered to carefully read the story first.  You miss a lot that way and it defeats your own arguments.  Sorry, I just do not get it and therefore have to agree with Brion on everything no matter what he said. Because he read his own story at least.

Now to the actual criticism: if today is NOT a joke page, the toy's tie clip really stylistically disturbs me.  I love the fashion in Flipside and tie clips just don't fit.  Too weirdly modern IMO.

Flipside Discussion / Char designs ch 36 cover

Huh, where's the chapter 36 thread?  You can merge this in when it starts :-)

I always love the new character designs in this comic.  My first reaction to seeing the new cover was:

"What's Mei from Avatar the Last Airbender doing there?"  (funnier if it turns out to be a man!)

My second reaction was "What's Katy Perry doing there in her Grammys dress?"

LOL

The videos are gone but now I see a full page 2012 Optima car ad spread that not only completely takes up the entire real estate of the first page on iPad Safari, but also covers the comic image and menu items up to the blog entries. I think you should keep on complaining to Keenspot about these invasive ads.

The new video ads on the site are horrible.  you can close the monstrosity after it auto plays but it's still a pain in the ass.  anything autoplaying with sound = lose anyway, you should complain to your web hosts

Just a short pop in after a while.  I agree with Crest, though I think he is being a little cruel in that last panel.  May and Crest are very similar in that they are both excellent readers of people.  Crest however seems to get into more trouble but also has more "likability" to me as a reader because his reactions to people - and situations - are genuine, not studied to produce the best results as May does.  At least I like to think this of him - this is why he seemed a useless putz at the beginning of the story and now a likable kid at this point.  Great character development, and nice to see May's own people reading skills being turned on herself.

I think Suspira is sleeping a lot because she is still depressed over Kin.  Depression can make you do that.  I am hoping she doesn't decide to off heeself at some point, actually, because those are the signs I read in her behaviour.

I still am not really a big fan of Maytag anymore due to what I see as the slightly over idealized heroine character portrayal. She will cry, she will be hurt by her friends and possibly her lover, they will all be mad at her, she will be kidnapped and put in extreme danger during this time of estrangement, everyone will have the big revelation about how much they like her when she's gone, and then she will come back (or perhaps be brought back by a collective rescue attempt) and there will be tears of joy and begging for forgiveness...  that is my prediction.  Oh, except for Moss, who will be a cool kat.  His girlfriend will go apeshit, though.

If this does not happen, I will be very happy.  :-)

I agree, without the side story this whole "But it's NOT entertaining" discussion could be moot because it would be easier to suspend disbelief.

That being said, I waited a few days, came back and read the developments, and feel my initial assessment was fairly right:  wait a little for more than 1 page, and the author will justify the story somewhat.  Whatever you think about Maytag as a character, I think how her show is being dealt with by the judges is fair.  Thanks for "saving" it back into believablity, Bryon. :)

Edit:  this opinion will change if the last guy on the judge panel overrules the other critic by saying "well, even though it's a comedy club, this was more entertaining, so let's let her stay in"

I would believe that this performance could earn her an independent supporter for her show, or have the winner of the show give over the title (and cash) for her instead.  I would not believe this performance could allow her to win the contest itself.  That would relate more to my main critique, "everybody loves Maytag!  Maybe a little too much!"   :P

Still waiting eagerly to see what Bernadette is doing, though.  And what Crest and Suspira are up to.  And Moss and Fata Morgana.  And even Bloody Mary!  All of these people are keeping me much more engaged that Maytag is.  *hops from foot to foot eagerly*

Though my opinions about Maytag and her performance have not changed after the side story, we're less than 1 page into the next chapter, I don't think we need to start it with some hatin' guys.

What I am excited to see is how this latest cover will be coloured.  I think the costume design in this comic is great, for both genders, so I always get a little excited to see cover art that features fully clothed full body artwork.   ;D

So Maytag is basically Tokiko Mima?

Props to perhaps the only other metal idol fan around these parts !

And I would say no unless she starts popping pnk pills and bursting into song, which might then cause her to vomit up those pills again.  ;-)

When was it ever dangerous to others?

I would say chapter 2 page 43 and onwards.  Although it would be more interesting if she didn't take initiative without her costume because she really didn't care about Crest getting punched and Orransong getting stabbed.  But that doesn't seem in character for what we've learned of Maytag, the girl who can rescue anybody from any situation at the mere cost of her own health, either.

After seeing the big secret, I tend to agree with Asyndeta.

I still think the comic has great art and is fun to read because of the large cast of "minor" characters who are very well written.  But Maytag is becoming a part of the comic I sigh at and suffer through until I can learn about what happens to everyone else.

To be fair, professional Japanese mangaka do this sort of thing with their main characters all the time, too.  I just don't like reading it in licensed manga either, though.    ;)

Just stopping by to comment on Maytag's exposition.

While I, as a reader, find it great to hear her explain about her split personality issue, I cannot, for the life of me, imagine that she is holding the audience captive with this story.  No, really, they came there for standup comedy and they get an eyeful and her baring her soul.  Considering the audience I am wondering why nobody is catcalling "why don't you bare your boobs again instead of your soul" or such like that.

That being said, I find the storyline about Bernadette keeping secrets from Maytag to be very interesting.  I think she's going to get her proverbial ass kicked about it eventually when Maytag finds out, and am looking forward to that.  Don't get me wrong, I like Bernadette, she's my favourite character in this comic.  But she has been - and does need to do more - growing out of the downsides of her at times puritan paladin mentality.

... plus that spiky hair chick is hot.   :-*

Quick art critique: Chapter 30, Page 19, Panel 5 (left side panel, middle row):

I think that horse's back right leg is bending in the wrong direction.  It looks like the horse's knee joint is bending like a human knee joint, that is in a forward direction.  But that particular joint on the hind leg of a horse bends in the other direction when it walks, that is to say, backwards:

Edit, wait, I found a better picture here...

Otherwise looks great.  I'm really intrigued by the character of Blackbird, and I like her design.

Oops!  I hope Bern likes a threesome because Maytag really does love Regina.  If Regina loves her back now, it won't be a "fling" like Umber was.

I still like Crest better than Regina as the Dr. Who companion, though.

It's nice to finally find out why Bernadette is always wearing that scarf! Also, I don't remember, but is that the city where Bernadette grew up / joined that gang with Clarien or whateverhernamewas? Did we ever learn where that part of her life took place?

On Regina - I think it's the real one from book 0. I suspected it would be her from the foreshadowing pages, which if I remember also included Moss and Fata in a separate panel, so my bets are on a real one.

I also think she's going to tank and burn in the competition. Unless her personality did a 180 she never seemed to have the self confidence to succeed at something as brutal as stand up comedy. I thought the mage test would be easier by comparison and she failed that due to low self esteem. But who knows?

I am much more curious now to see if Moss meets Regina again, and what sort of snark he would have for her. And whether or not she's grown enough to snark back, heh heh.

Well obviously I do not have a career in stand up comedy ahead of me so take this all with a grain of salt, heh.

The first thing I would think of would be to make a pretty unfair male bash joke about not having kids because she already has enough immaturity to handle with a man in the first place.  But that is mean, doesn't suit Maytag philosophy, and isn't actually all that funny, so here are some random ones.

Why practice magical contraception?  Well, my friend's kids might have something to do with it.  She named them pill, condom and diapharagm!

Or

Why do they always sacrifice virgins?  Because they sure as hell aren't gonna sacrifice the ones that put out!

Or

Marriage is the only adventure open to the cowardly.  *this is a real quote from Voltaire, but you could turn it into a joke.  Go 1600s intellectuals!

And last,

Why do moths fly with their legs apart?  Well, have you seen the size of moth balls?!

I'm sure there are better sex jokes out there.  You might want to start a joke thread and have reader contributions with votings.  Then it could be like a real contest, LOL!

I do love this comic, I read it regularly and have for years, and I don't plan to stop.

That being said, wow.  You may want to stay away from writing Maytag's award-winning jokes, Brion.  If that last panel on Wednesday's page was any indicator, she should be in for a sure loss.  If you really absolutely feel the need to put some stand up comedy jokes in the panels, I would say, either steal them from someone else and credit on the page where you took them from, or just infer and don't point out.  That may sound harsh, but you know, if Maytag were doing real life standup somewhere with that line, the audience would be giving her the cold, uncomprehending stare that kills careers before they even begin.  And no, I'm not against profanity or opinionated jokes, but you know?  They have to be funny.

So yeah.  "I'm never having kids, because babysitting kids is a pain in the ass!  HAHAHA ONTO THE NEXT ROUND!"  Not flying.

Like these or these or even these although Maytag as you've presented her so far really strikes me as the George Carlin type.

referring to Chapter 29, Page 9

Last edit:  I went googling for funny jokes on the theme "I don't want to have kids!" touched by Maytag in the last panel to list as possible examples, and couldn't really find anything.  Perhaps I'm looking in the wrong places for them, but I guess it's just not a rip roaring topic to win contests with. :P

There is this, though:

The condom commercial

Actually I would like to see some argument live and then Bern suddenly leaving the studio not being able to stand this May talk anymore.
But May instead of going for Bern would stay in the studio still following the talk and joking like nothing happened.
And embarassed Bern could be approached by Vennice.
Could be a nice setup :3

That would be kind of awesome, though highly unlikely. ;-)

Personally I'm not digging May's passive-aggressive behaviour towards Bern on the podcast (that's how I read it, because if my own husband did something he know would make me extremely uncomfortable in front of tens of thousands of people with a smile and a little "oh, oopsie", I'd be pretty mad at him), but then again it has also been going against her personality to repress her own sexuality for Bern's benefit.  All that relationship pressure has got to explode somewhere if they don't talk about it, and I guess messily on a podcast is just as well a place to do it as anywhere else.

I kind of think it will work itself out in the end with Bern caving to May's wishes for a more open relationship, just because that's the way this comic goes - when it comes to conflict solving, Maytag usually turns out right in the end - but how it actually gets to that point could be interesting.

You know, I feel like Crest is developing relatively well. Maybe not quickly but he has grown.  I find it interesting that he's now carrying a sword - he has potential. Bern has called him a promising swordsman and he thinks like Maytag - finding creative solutions to problems that stump others.

He still is all thumbs with the ladies, though. ;)

I want to know where the other half of Bern's magic sword is and what it does!

I think someone referenced this already, but to be double sure:

http://www.flipsidecomics.com/comic.php?i=1022

"having their heart race"

Thier is a good name for a character, not a possessive pronoun.  This may help:

Quote
Their is a possessive pronoun. It always describes a noun.

Note the spelling of their. It comes from the word they, so the e comes before the i.

After reading the last couple of pages I can see why Maytag thought Crest reminded her a little of herself.  He has a bit of the same attitude doesn't he?  Except as far as I can see, he doesn't have the joker suit or the infinite bag of magic tricks to back it up.  It's nice Crest character development in all, I'm starting to actually like him as his own character rather than think of him as "the new Regina."

I was just going through the archives, and all the mistakes were starting to bug me.  So I thought I'd list them here in case anyone ever decides to go through the site and update-o.

look here

Chapter 2:
Enter Bernadette: A brilliant young swordswoman, who dreams of becoming a knight. She also happens to have a connection to Maytag... which helps when there's a dangerous psycho on the loose, who wants to make Maytag his own personal pet!

Chapter 3:
Maytag & Bernadette receive an invitation to see the Knights, and Crest tags along. Although women aren't normally allowed to join the knighthood, Bernadette still dreams of joining them. It looks as though her dreams are about to become reality... but not without paying a toll.

Bernadette's Sword Style: It's known as "The Split Rose." This style utilizes two swords for pure defense, with the focus on parrying and counter-attacking the enemy. Therefore, it is worthless to a soldier or mercenary, and best used by a bodyguard.

Chapter 4:
Maytag whisks Crest away on a hot date, much to his surprise. But Crest still has trouble forming sentences when her shapely form is anywhere close to his field of vision. It won't be much of a date if Maytag is the one doing all the talking!

But... Maytag has a plan. She seems to want to help Crest learn to express himself and be more comfortable around women. Will her plan be disrupted when an old flame crosses their path?

Chapter 6:
Umber is a stage performer, sort of like Maytag only with less jokes and more scantily clad erotic dancing. So naturally, you'd figure she and May have a history. Crest figures this too, and with a surprising new-found courage he goes to pump her for information.

Maytag has a boyfriend... and Crest is dying to find out who it is. He wants to see with his own eyes what kind of man May is cheating on...

more later :)
