"not very bright, are you?" Brighter than YOU, Moss. At least he's asking the RIGHT questions. As for Danzig's staff. I thought it was mechanical not magical. I mean by using springs correctly, you COULD get an expanding and retractable rod just like the one Danzig's using. In fact, there are several companies that make such devices. Some umbrellas, fishing rods, and rescue ladders work on the same principle here in RL and they obviously don't use sorcery to work.

As was pointed out to me earlier, Glyph uses both. He DID use some kind of levitation spell to "carry" Suspira when they left the carriage since she had used all her essence on Maytag and Bern with that "truth" spell.

Something occurs to me. Since that flower grows when essence is absorbed, is there an upper limit? Can it be overloaded? And if so, what happens?

1: Crest stands next to maytag, not even looking at that staff he attempts to protect her of. Great cover.
2: Maytag could probably, you know, move out of reach of that staff instead of apparently just standing there.
3: You nor anyone else has any idea how that "flower" actually works at all and glyph doesn't even know of it.
Also fata probably uses about as much " conventional magic" as bloody mary or clairen did. None at all.
4: Indeed.
5: So everyone instantly knows of this which in itself is a guess at best since it was at no point mentioned in the story at all?

Nope sir, this makes no sense, everyone just standing around casually. Except maybe moss and fata.

1.) Look at the positions more closely. Crest appears to have been standing IN FRONT of Maytag until he saw Bernadette sliding towards him and stepped back. He is still close enough that he can get between Danzing's "power pole" and Maytag should the need arise.

2.) Yes, perhaps she can jump, duck or slide out of the way, but we don't know how far her agility's fallen now that she's missing an arm. A great many acrobatic feats DO require landing on your hands (both of them) after a good jump or roll. She's also lost a great deal of her "confidence" since her jester outfit is missing. It's what she draws her bravado from. Remember how quickly she folded when Volger stripped her naked out of it?

3.) I was paying attention when it was used on Suspira, and based on what I've seen, it uses the offensive magic as a conduit to absorb ALL of the attacking mage's essence. This is why Suspira dropped like a rock. Unless the author did further retcons on that frame to alter what happened, (conflict with other story explanations etc.) it's a sound theory. As for the "conventional magic," that's why I stipulated that it's not triggered by residual or "background" magic. There's also been quite a bit of travel and talking off screen unless you expect us to believe that Moss teleported instantaneously an ever growing number of people cell by cell until the whole party was assembled. If they traveled by normal means, it would be rather silly of Crest to NOT mention some warning about how Danzig bested Suspira. Moss certainly knew about it as he demanded that Danzig "put the flower away." Glyph may be a pervert, but he's not an idiot. As pissed off as he is, I doubt he's going to do anything until he knows what the flower "does," if he hasn't been informed already.

4.) I'm glad we agree on something.

5.) If I was in the carriage with someone who threatened to gauge some eyes out and rather vehemently slapped someone else (with good reason I admit), I'd be prone to believe she'd be insulted if I tried to intrude on her fight without permission. I'd also be quite scared of incurring her wrath.

Bottom left panel sums it all up.
Bern getting beaten the crap out of while everyone else just stands around like statues.
They even look kinda bored.
...
...
DO SOMETHING!

I know, maybe moss has some super special awesome plan and does indeed not give a fuck. That would be in character.
Everyone else should at least, you know, look a bit concerned and not be all like "Oh no, don't die etc.".

It's their stiffness.

Lesseee...

1.) Crest is busy covering Maytag.

2.) Maytag can't DO anything since her Jester outfit, purse/D-bag, and all her wonderful "toys" are missing. Not to mention that she only has one arm now, and even with BOTH arms and legs, totally SUCKS at melee. (By her own admission.)

3.) Fata is an illusion mage and while background or already active spells don't seem to trigger the "flower," any NEW magic (specifically offensive magic) will trigger the flower and cause it to absorb all the caster's essence rendering him or her unconscious. That rules out glyph too, unless he's a total kick ass wrestler, but we've seen no evidence of his martial skills in any sense.

4.) As already stated, Moss doesn't "fucking care."

5.) Bern would probably take it as an insult if someone came to her aid without her asking for it. Not only is it part of her personality/ charm, but it's also the "Knight's code" that she was trained under. At least that's my impression.

So...
why is there a 1 on 1 fight between a sorcerer of unknown strength and bern who can clearly do nothing at all to defend herself against sorcery now while 2 sorcerers, 1 of which supposedly has mary sue-ish power just stand back and watch?

Because the "flower" will drain all the essence of any sorcerer who uses offensive sorcery against Danzig or the wielder.

I don't think the "rod" is extending. I think it's firing projectiles of some sort.

And Danzig, if you knew anything about her at all...

1.) The "bath" incident is not the first rape attempt on her.

2.) She doesn't seem to be attracted to men in general. Perhaps that scar has something to do with it?

Or he could just be after the "research" for its own sake, like say Mengelev or some other "scientists" from history that thought nothing of kidnapping, torture, experimentation, even murder as long as they "learned" something.

Good question... and is Melter still around?

Yeah, when Escher started absorbing her essence he had a much smaller flower and it grew much larger than what he's showing now, so maybe he's still got some of her essence stored up and some of it has drained away.  Makes you wonder if he, or someone else, can do something with all that gathered essence... Seriously, could he gather the essence of multiple people (doesn't mater what level of caster since everyone has an equal amount of essence) and then allow another caster to use it all to do a REALLY big spell (like the giant Warp Box they're inside)?

That "equal amount" of essence thing was MAYTAG's understanding, not the author's. While Maytag is very knowledgeable about magic in the Flipsideverse, she doesn't know EVERYTHING. Just look at how much she's learning NOW. Further, Iverness, is a "genius" so it's possible that there are some people who have MORE essence than the norm.

As for Glyph not having magic, we can't be entirely certain of that. He may not have USED magic outside the "power scouter, let's see what you've got under your clothes" item, but that doesn't automatically mean he CAN'T. Not everyone likes to blow through their essence in a fit of impulse like Suspira does.

It's too bad Suspiria has a headache.  Looks like Crest won't be getting any for a while  :D.
Yeah because there was ever a chance of that happening.  ::)

He's had SOME charming effect on her. He's shown himself highly intelligent, compassionate and promised to "put up with her" like Kirin did. We all know how HE was rewarded for that.

I'm also quite surprised at Suspira's sudden appearance. We're not shown exactly how or when she rejoins the party, she's just suddenly "THERE."

I don't think Glyph's reaction is an act. It's justified rage. Being a pervert does NOT automatically make you a rapist. There are a great many perverts who are not rapists. There are also many rapists who are not perverts. While the two crimes may go together, neither is a prerequisite for the other.

Also, Glyph neither gave consent nor had any control in that situation. Saying he "enjoyed it" is like saying a woman who was raped "enjoyed" being raped because she was stimulated to orgasm or had a history of being promiscuous. I should point out that while a great deal of media from many cultures perpetuates this idea, it is totally false. If Glyph was NOT angry and defensive, then I'd be worried.

Glyph is still unconscious. Crest is apparently respecting Bern's need for modesty and has his back turned despite having seen her naked before. (Perhaps he's afraid of getting his eyes gouged out.) If Glyph is part of the merry crew (willing or otherwise), why is he there where both Bern AND Crest can hurt him, a lot, and repeatedly as well as apparently locked inside? It seems no one has tested the door yet. There are many reasons why Maytag's purse is missing.

1.) Simple theft. Whoever took it know the Thin Man's rep and simply thought Maytag wasn't going to need it, or anything inside again.

2.) Whoever took it wanted to know more about "the recruit" and is currently examining the contents.

3.) It's all part of a standard disarm and capture ploy. Take all their stuff so they can't put up any resistance. Only problem with that is that Crest still has all his clothes. (As well as Suspira for that matter, although she's been fully drained of "essence.")

4.) This is indeed another room in the "warp box" and it only appears to be the room where she left her stuff. The clothes she now has on, may not even be hers!

5.) This could just be another trick/ illusion entirely, in this wonderful "fun" house rat maze.

I'm sure there are many more. Just out of curiousity, even with Moss' help, how does Maytag plan to help everyone? She's no match for Melter, let alone Melter, Danzig, the guy who sucked up Suspira's essence, etc. all at once!

Well, there is indeed some kind of magical light source that has not been seen throughout the whole "warp box." The hallway has no windows, there are no lamps, none of the characters is holding a torch, and yet everything is well-lit. We did not see the "sky" in the "forest," so we can't even be sure if there even IS a "sun." Plants will grow in artificial light. So.... it is PLAUSIBLE that the forest IS part of the "warp box." Maytag's reaction is quite normal, tbh. Even though she's quite familiar with the workings of sorcery, the sheer scale of this construct SHOULD inspire awe.

A disturbing thought occurs to me. What if "the Thin Man" isn't just one person, but is in fact, the name of an organization? The way Melter told Bloody Mary that "we consider you a breakthrough" hints at that. The fact that everyone in the organization would refer to "thin man" as "he" is a well used red herring designed to confuse victims and authorities alike and has been rather successful in concealing many organizations.

Normally, I would recommend that Maytag have no dealings with these "women." They're freaking bug nuts. Unfortunately, Maytag doesn't have the luxury of choosing her allies right now. She needs all the help she can get. She SHOULD look for a way to get rid of them ASAP though.

According to Fata (who has yet to be caught lying), the Glyph in the bath is an illusion like the Crest, Umber combo and Maytag's suit.

Any chance you know what page that on? >.>; I don't it was ever said for certain in the comic whether that Glyph was one of the twins or Fata, actually for that matter they never said it wasn't actually Glyph, though due to the eyes I think it was safe to say it was one of the twins.

Fata's exact words (interviewing Maytag after the failed "seduction" scene) were "Don't worry about that guy in the bath, he was just an illusion."

i just want to clear something i'm still a little confused about, the Glyph in the bath...
that wasn't the real Glyph was it?

According to Fata (who has yet to be caught lying), the Glyph in the bath is an illusion like the Crest, Umber combo and Maytag's suit.

As for the purpose of these "obstacles,"

1.) It's reasonable to assume that these people work for or with the "Thin Man" as they have "friendly" relations with "Melter" who is a known Thin Man minion.

2.) They like playing mind games on people, judging from the bath and stair episodes.

3.) They are running our heroes like rats in a maze. Checking their skills and abilities, and general level of adaptability.

4.) Their elevator doesn't quite reach the top floor if you catch my meaning.

Moss, your behavior is despicable. There is absolutely NOTHING "cool" about demanding sex from anyone who is denied the right to say "no."  >:(

As for those who would have acquiesced (agreed) to Moss' demands, I have seen far too many times where the prisoner AGREED, slept with the "accomplice" and then the "accomplice" deliberately FOILS the escape attempt. There is no guarantee that agreeing would have resulted in his help.

Now had Moss rescued Maytag UP front, and she, Bern, or even SUSPIRA had been grateful enough to sleep with him afterwards, of her own volition, that would be different. Heck, even owing him a "big favor" would have been far preferable. Demanding that she prostitute herself before even lifting a finger to help, is inexcusable. I hope a meteor lands on him.

Or maybe he's wondering what happened to that leg marking.

I agree that a kiss from Maytag and Bern would be a great gift :)

However, I'm betting he would be even happier if Maytag got him a date with Umber ;D

Umm, no he wouldn't. We've already established that he doesn't "plow other guys' fields" even with permission. Monogamy is a VERY strict discipline with him. He might not mind a date with Suspira though, or any other hot girl who is unattached.

Crest could use a sword too. He's good at them. (Not great, but good enough.) Or maybe a D-bag. He has the "thief" skill set. The doll is not appropriate. Bern would "accidentally" break it. She was rather dismayed at the nude drawings that Suspira's BF was making of Maytag after all. Now that's a thought, nude drawings as art would not be a bad present. (Or at least topless.) Suspira can participate too if she wants. If they agree though, what would Crest give back in return? It would have to be something mighty impressive. (Except maybe for Maytag, she gives the world full permission to view her nude at any time.)
