Flipside Discussion / Re: Chapter 51: Discussion
« on: September 17, 2018, 03:19:44 am »
I really like this scene a lot, because it hit me so differently compared to Suspiria's outburst. You see, Moby once again couldn't control her emotions as if she didn't go through any professional Phalanx training whatsoever, and pushed Suspiria over the edge instead of realizing that our precious glass cannon needed support and comfort or else! So I felt really really bad for poor Suspiria and I'm still hoping against hope that she can somehow return.
But Moby can go to hell! And everyone else who didn't try to stop her can go with her (i.e. everyone besides Crest and Regina). Nobody had any sense of danger whatsoever even though they've been inspecting one of the most dangerous places in the world. So of course they got Worfed really hard from the beginning to the end. At least Crest realized that he was in way over his head after the sphere unworfed him from a dumb Phalanx person back to a sensible human being.

Thus I'm currently just relaxing and enjoying the show instead of being caught up in the intense drama that's happening.  ;D
Let's find out who's next to be torn to pieces!

As a side note:
Does the Phalanx not have access to Anti Magic spheres and other convenient gadgets that just might come in handy for inspecting - oh I don't know - only one of the most dangerous and highly magical places on this side of the world?
A scouting/scrying spell maybe? Or Q'Talda's clone spell? But hey, who needs to learn from another's experience on how to survive if you're an elite soldier, right? :P
Also if I were in charge of such a prison then the very bricks of all floors, walls and ceilings would be made of "Strong Anti-Magic sphere"-material. Or as much as the budget allows. Maybe find a way to suck away their energy... wait. Is that what the pit was originally for?

edit: Ok I forgot the walls are indeed heavily anti-sorcery. http://flipside.keenspot.com/comic.php?i=3273

Nice! Finally we get to see a showdown between Mary, Melter and Suspiria. Also the "conclave". :)
It's about time Melter showed his face. Now is the perfect time to insert a bunch of Bernadette-related chapters with her former lesbian love interest with a lot of crying and cheesy dialogue. ::)
And then Maytag appears, everyone makes up and then they become the most famous radio station by just having threesomes.

Aaaaaaaaaaaand worf'ed.  8)

The Phalanx (except for Q'Talda) should really just go and play tea party with their dolls and leave the grown-up stuff to the people who can actually do something. :P Am I being too harsh on those poor excuses for elite casters?  ::) Phalanx is really just short for Phallus and Laxative, because everything they did was either sexual or crappy or both. So far Crest and Regina performed better than them, because they at least were aware that something was wrong.

So, yeah, looking forward to seeing Suspiria face off with Melter, potentially with a fully-developed Bloody Mary by her side, but I suspect that they will be pwned by him.

I still think he's helping her.

Regina is probably causing this. Also, Melter is creepy.
Oh, right, his name is Melter. Kinda fitting that he is causing... Melt-downs. 8)

Happy new Year, everyone!

I hope that the groundhog day update will be Melter reverting time once more.

No one deserves to be raped. But lots of people get raped, women and men, and it needs to be addressed. Which is why it's important to have it presented in an equal manner in fiction. I don't like what's going on here, but I appreciate that Brion is including it as part of his story.
Amen to that. Couldn't have said it better myself.

Somehow I still believe Mopy[sic] isn't herself right now. Maybe some emotion-amplifying spell was placed on her or something. Same for Ms. "it's all my fault".

In panel 1 Moby's shadow in her left eye looks kinda like her pupil when watched from a distance, she at my first glance I had the impression that she became insane enough to look derp-eyed. ;D Crest should totally say "If I give you a muffin, will you let me go?"

Yeah, in Real Life I agree. When it comes to fictional characters however, I just like to be heartless sometimes. ::) Unworthy characters can just stay away from the story, so we can focus on the ones which are actually competent instead. So the so-called "Phalanx" can go get Worfed somewhere else for all I care. Except for Q'talda. I like her.

Of course there's always the option of them prooving themselves, but Moby isn't doing a good job at it. Knife-dude is a nice guy I guess. So let's see who is actually competent.

It's so good to see that there's at least one character in the "Phalanx" who admits to being no good. He can be the apple:
"Hey, hey what's-your-name! Hey!"
"What?"
"KNIFE!!!"

Annoying Orange

And Moby can be next for all I care.

If you refer to sexual abuse in reality, then sadly the problem is way bigger than what happened recently, because it has happened throughout our entire history. What is happening nowadays is that more and more of that horrible stuff comes to light, because more and more people actually care about it. Also thanks to the internet, victims can make themselves heard a lot louder (see #metoo).

I dunno about the sex thing... I think Crest and Regina need someone to open their hearts to, not just someone for plugging genitals together. But one of the things this comic rides on is showing the occasional naked female body, so I figured it's simply that time of the comic again. :P That's why Moby and that Dude got to be in Phalanx. Competence is overrated. 8) Only Q'talda gets to be competent. The rest is just there to get Worfed.

I agree on the character list. I read about two dozen web comics and I keep forgetting names in literally all of them. Character galleries help sooo much, but unfortunately not many comics have them.

Yeah, they're giving the Phalanx a bad name. Or, if they were just hypnotized to act this way, they merely look weak. So, pretty much anyone besides Q'talda and that elderly guy who was able to resist Suspiria's hypnotism (but still died afair) reminds me of this:
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TheWorfEffect

Maybe it's because the Phalanx had to be replaced almost entirely, so now there's a bunch of Noobs in power.

So, 3 pairs about to... do stuff with each other? Looks like this is where the bad guy gets a triple erection and thus becomes able to rewind time again. :)
http://flipside.keenspot.com/comic.php?i=3283

But on a more serious note: Something is definitely wrong here. These people are supposed to investigate a murder case in a very creepy environment. Nooooot the kind of atmosphere I'd want to have sex in. Also not the kind of atmosphere where I'd want to be separate from the group. These guys have been looking so helpless and pathetic ever since we got to see the rewind powers. Time magic is one of the most OP powers in pretty much any fantasy setting, so I'm looking forward to finding out how they get out of this predicament.

Read that last line. She didnt just condition, she substituted a stronger feeling. So this means if she comes again, this time with eyes, she will be able to see and still walk past, so long as whatever feeling (say love or rage or happiness) is able to completely overwhelm the despair.
Yeah, why not use happy feelings? Drugs, maybe? I mean, the world is magical enough that side-effects should be curable, since they're even able to revive people (see book 0).

Go Go Go Maytag! ^^ God, I can't wait for this to resolve! Part of me wants to stop coming here for every update, so I can read it all in one go, because of course this scene has to happen in slow motion, but on the other hand I can't stop myself. Oh well, when I was a kid I watched some cartoon series that continued once per week for half a year, so I should be able to endure the tension for a couple of pages. :-)

Seeing May smile I think her goal here is something else completely than moving forward with the injury and earplugs, trying to force this qualia being into acting its role as Bern who still dumps her while not giving a damn about her injury which she should, could really make May's subconcious realise this is all fake?

There is something more to this plan, yes.

Also, I hope she gets her eyes back (or a substitute) when this is all done. Because this is kinda pointless if she doesn't actually know what's beyond this. It might be pointless anyway.
Well, this is a world where even resurrection is possible. Also she already got her arm healed after letting Mary eat it, so getting her eyes back should be easy.

Still.... so creepy, they way she looks. >_<

Okaaayy.... could it be that Phase 2 conditioned her to move forward while being in pain? And Phase 1 conditioned her to move forward while being afraid? Huh. Interesting.

Just a few small things:
On chapter 15, page 5 of book 0, your note refers to chapter 12, page 1. It would be nice if you added a link to it. Yes, I know it's real easy to change the URL accordingly, but a link would still be nice.

Also book 0 could generally use a menu to navigate to other places. Especially to this one.

Also the pictures on this page aren't working for me.

edit: The note here belongs two pages later.

Yeah, I know about the slope, but it's just a slight one, so there shouldn't be a problem walking all the way to Phase 3 and have someone push you into it with a broom while you're on wheels, because the broom will push you regardless of a tiny slope.

Also a conveyor belt doesn't care about a small slope. Unless the belt has no friction whatsoever, but it would just be stupid to use a material like that.

But I will read book 0 next, thanks for hinting at it. I don't remember May's quote though.

Regarding the current page:
I wonder if Maytag took the knife in there because her girlfriend has super-strong subconscious reflexes to do perfect counters. Maybe she will counter May's attempt to stab herself. Yes, the Split Rose is a style to prevent yourself from getting hurt, but maybe the fact that it's a pacifist style is enough to have Bern act.

I wonder if "The Dark Cell's Third Phase, Pt.II" means that phase 3 has a second part or if it merely means that this is part 2 of the phase 3 storyline.

Also, I'm fairly new, so I haven't read most of the discussions here, but I was wondering what has been discussed already regarding trying to use mechanical objects for help? What if two persons enter dark cell, but only one goes to phase 3 and the other one has the task of shoving that person further by using a long broom? The person in phase 3 could be on wheels.

Does the Flipside world have any kind of device like our cars that could go on and on regardless of what kind of illusions the persons inside are being put under?

Or maybe they could create a really long conveyor belt, shove it inside so that only the part with the crank sticks out and have someone ride it while other persons (or even some magic) turn the crank.

Was any of this discussed somewhere already? Because it's really difficult to find since chapter discussions are always about all kinds of things happening there.

And why are the beings controlling dark cell using only illusions anyway? Wouldn't it be smarter to just disintegrate anyone who gets too far? Or are they just playing around with their prey and phase 10 is actually really deadly?
