Flipside Discussion / Re: Japan Break

Thanks for the links, but I think I shall prefer to read it from the beginning.

I've been thinking for a while about the scene where Moby snapped at Suspiria and Crest and pushed them both over the edge, and the more I think about it, the less sense it makes. She sounds out of character, like a bitchy teenager, probably just like how Suspiria remembered her from school. She could of course theoretically still be that way, but there are a bunch of reasons why this isn't normal for her under the circumstances:

1. Isn't she a Phalanx soldier? Don't these people have professional emotional training to deal with difficult situations, e.g. staying focused in the face of death, but also staying forcused during a mission, if not all the time?
2. They knew that they were powerless against Suspiria. But they went on this all but hopeless mission anyway, with one goal: Support Crest to give him an opportunity to talk to Suspiria and maaaaaybe she won't kill everyone. So, what are you not supposed to do? Yell at Suspiria. And what else are you not supposed to do? Yell at Crest. And what else are you not supposed to do? Lose your shit while being inside a dangerous room that nobody was supposed to enter, ever, while also being in the presence of Melter and Bloody Mary. Did Moby realize any of that? Nope.
3. Why did nobody stop her and make her regain focus until shy Regina dared to speak up? Regina's not Phalanx, right? I don't thinkg that Phalanx training makes you stupid. I prefer to think Suspiria bent reality so much that nobody was able to stop her in time?

Thus I can only conclude that the anti magic sphere didn't cancel out all of Suspiria's influence. Maybe for Crest, because he was holding the thing, and maybe for Regina, because she held it right before (so the reality-bending had to start over for her), and Melter held it the day before (and possibly Mary, too) but not for anyone else.

I know I keep making fun of the Phalanx and the Conclave for looking like incompetent buffoons almost all the time (except for Qtalda), but Moby outclassed everything I've read so far by a rather large margin and nobody had the sense to intervene. That can't be right. I mean, until now the stupidest thing I've read a Phalanx do so far was Glyph eating the poisoned sandwich before he made out with Bernadette in the pool. I believe that an elite soldier should've been taught about poisons and how to analyze food, but that was merely a rather large mistake that can happen if the guy prefers to analyze women over analyzing anything else. I guess he was also caught off-guard by the fact that the hotel seemed like a nice and safe place. A stupid and big mistake, but nowhere near the mistake of losing focus in the worst danger zone they've ever been in.

So, what does everyone else think? Was Moby herself or not? The sphere likely comes from that continent where level 6 sorcerers are relatively common and the thin man should be rich enough to afford something of adequate power. Did Melter analyze Suspiria's power by himself or did the thin man paint the answer and Suspiria has gone beyond level 7 by now?

What? The main character develops? Inconceivable! :o

But I suspect that his current bravery is because of either Suspiria regaining her world-shaping influence now that the sphere is broken or that music-based spell is still in effect. Or both. Crest is probably going to take something away from this, but I don't think he is going to keep up being that smart, brave and clear-headed under pressure.

Japan is a beautiful country! I've been there once, too. Enjoy yourselves and don't worry about us. I am currently reading about two dozen web comics and I have a bunch of other hobbies as well.

If Gunnerkrigg is that good then I might as well read that one to pass the time.

Do I need to add that? I thought I covered that with my quoted statement. Unless you wanted me to write "killed Crest as quickly or faster than it did away with Buzz".

Whether or not that thing knows, I guess we'll find out. Either way it's not scared of the sword. But if immobility is really going to happen to it, then I don't believe it knows about that ability, because otherwise it would be stupid to let Crest get so close.

If that thing were scared it would've killed Crest as quickly as it did away with Buzz when he dared to play that song that made all the skeletons disappear.

Oh well, I guess we'll soon find out how immortal that thing really is. Let's see if that sword can do this to him: http://www.sandraandwoo.com/2016/08/01/0808-the-divine-comedy-page-6/

Yep, ever since that sphere broke and that dude played the song he reverted back to being confident. But I'm still not sure if he reverts to becoming Kin again, because he looks more emotional than in the previous chapters.

Btw: I just remembered that resurrection is a thing in this world (from the prison arc where Bern's not-girlfriend got fatally poisoned), so if the crew goes to the bottom of the pit, maybe they can take home the remains they may or may not find. But meh, they're just Phalanx, so who actually cares? ::)

Looks like that thing is enjoying itself seeing its food struggle. I don't have any other explanation as to why there aren't any more spikes coming out of the walls or skeletons coming from the pit. There should even be two new ones available by now. 8)

Also if the sword's healing power doesn't work, then maaaaybe paralysis will do something? I mean, if the whole pit is powered by that thing, maybe the rotating blades will stop and everyone can drop down safely and explore it?

Okay, now that we know there's no way out the situation looks positively dire. Soooooo... another space-time-rewind, Melter? How about taking Suspiria with you through space-time and letting the "Phalanx" do another "investigation" that'll let them return empty-handed?

Oh that's why it seemed somehow familiar to me. I reread the archives recently, but I had already forgotten about the Demons of the Vorpal Sea thing again. And this I didn't think of the cook and the priest as demons either, even though now that I think about it they do both behave sort of like Hierophants. I.e. except for get "you get terminally ill if one touches you" thing.

Alright, things are really starting to look up now.
Next page: Regina or Moby gets stabbed and Melter's friend has to start all over again.

@Bulma: Oh, I didn't know magic was that specific, but I guess it makes enough sense. Was her carpet eaten in this chapter? Because if not then I'd wonder why she didn't have a bunch in reserve.

Flipside Discussion / Re: Chapter 51: Discussion

Moby, why do you say you're no good at flying magic? You have a flying carpet and you did carry yourself AND Crest in search for Suspiria.
Also: Why didn't you bring it with you? Eh, nevermind, the Phalanx in general didn't seem to think about bringing all kinds of magical gadgets with them.

75
Okay, Lehm not actually getting true answers is a possibility as well.

What does "demons of the Vorpal Sea" mean? Google doesn't appear to give me anything that makes sense in this context. "Demon of the Sea" was apparently another name for "Moby Dick" (which is a funny reference to flipside btw. XD) and the Vorpal Blade from DnD can decapitate on a crit.

From the points you're making it gets more and more clear that in a comic where you don't know what's actually real, literally anything could be the case.
But at least we can stick to the knowledge we got from intermissions, e.g. that an increase in levels means that you don't get more "mana", but your efficiency at using your soul energy increases.

Hello,

I recently had a thought: Assuming that all the people from the sources I'm going to quote tell the truth:
1. Dissolving tests for sorcery levels 4 through 6 are supposed to keep you firm on your emotions, yourself and reality in general: http://flipside.keenspot.com/comic.php?i=3539
2. However, the thin man says that reality is a lie. (I don't think I need to quote any page, because it's pretty much all he says all the time).
3. And Suspiria said that her power feels like she got rid of constraints, see last panel of http://flipside.keenspot.com/comic.php?i=1669

That makes me assume that those high-level dissolving tests have the purpose of "keeping you in the matrix". Imagine you're in the matrix and unknowingly take the red pill and suddenly you can do neo-like stuff and have no idea why. Of course that would be terrifying and you might become insane and even bend your body out of shape, so naturally people would create tests to counter any of those effects. However, those tests sound as if they're a huge effort to strengthen the constraints you actually might want to rid yourself of.

Cheers

I suspect that Brion did that because 36 was a double-page.

Yeah I understand that. I was just mainly wondering where the rest of the rather large following is, i.e. whether or not I am missing most of the action. I mean, the Patreon following is doing quite well and I assume that the total number of readers is typically about 100 times the paying followers. Also Brion rarely visits the forum lately.

Sorry for picking up an old topic, but I was just wondering: If the forums are almost dead, then where else is everyone?
Twitter has even less activity and the website doesn't link to any other social platforms. Are people talking on Patreon and Twitch instead?

Yeah, let's add that to the "Phalanx are stupid and do nothing but get worfed" list. ;D

Maybe Melter should've lifted them out of the pit 4 at a time instead of just floating there. But he seems to have a different agenda.

But would it have been so hard to make a 2nd spike appear and stab Moby at the same time? ::) Or does the Pit have a sense for drama?

Ok, that's weird. I recently started rereading the comic so I must've missed it as well. I'm currently in Chapter 36 and the thin man doesn't say anything like it either, quite the contrary in fact. http://flipside.keenspot.com/comic.php?i=1847 panel 3

@Bulma:
I've never seen Inuyasha, so I had to look this one up real quick, but yeah, I guess it's basically like that one.

I kinda wish we could've seen Buzz and Glyph do more. Up until this point I only remember that Glyph was able to see women naked and that he helped outsmarting that lightning rod fighter by using that Anti magic glove he didn't own. This goes for Buzz even more so, who pretty much became Kin's replacement in that regard, i.e. died on his first on-screen mission. ;-)

Btw, I just had a thought: If they're dead now, what happens to Maytag when she starts her own sound show? I totally call that a LOT of people will give her crap for seemingly just waltzing in after the others died.

As for Crest: If the pit is Suspiria's doing (and Melter assumed it's about halfway the case) then replacement-Kin is going to save the day.

@sunphoenix:
Weeeeell, Brion is preparing for a double-page, so we just might see Moby dying a horrible death. But I'll stick to my call that she gets to live a traumatized life.

So far I've seen Crest as someone who mostly shines with his smarts. He started out as an average guy who made the bad decision to cheat at poker to heal his blind mom and he keeps encountering people who are so much stronger than him, so instead of running away he asks Bernadette for training sessions and Suspiria offers to pay for some additional training while Bern is off visiting her father. And he keeps asking himself why he joined this Phalanx mission at all. It's only because they told him "talk to Suspiria, you're the only one she might listen to". He has been in way over his head most of the time, but was still brave enough to move forward. I think that's splendid character development, even if it's still unclear how much was Suspiria's influence.

But I think you're misusing the term "worfed" in case of Crest. Characters get worfed when the viewers are merely told about how awesome they are, but all they ever do is get beaten up by other people in order to establish how bad-ass those people are. You can't establish anyone as a bad-ass villain by having them beat up Crest. Crest has worfed a couple of standard thugs himself by putting his healing/paralyzing blade to practice a bunch of chapters back and that established him as a decent fighter, but nothing too special yet. If he fails here, then that's not worfing him for the sake of the pit, because we already know how powerful the pit is just because Melter admitted to it.
The worfed ones I keep complaining about is the Phalanx and even the Conclave (save Qtalda), because they rarely ever do anything besides getting killed.

I'm seconding SirBananaPie's bet.
Yay! ^^

Although an earlier arc DID say Mary dies tragically at some point. Maybe she dies saving the rest?
Oh. Who said that and when? Did you mean someone in an earlier arc predicted the future or did Brion disclose it during an arc discussion?

So, Brion, are you still reading this?

As for book 0: If you choose this chapter, then maybe redo that one scene where May didn't seem to care about getting raped. Just let the thugs say they're going to torture her instead.

But generally speaking I believe your story-telling kept improving over time, so I'd prefer something from a later chapter. May's insane laughter came across a lot more convincingly when Mary ate her arm or when she was in Dark Cell Phase 2. When facing thugs in later chapters May instead switched to her cold poker face and used words for manipulation. I preferred that.

That sad-faced skeleton is so hilarious! ;D

@Bulma:
Oh right the healing sword. If it can counter Death&Decay, a stoner surely is no problem.
Interesting that the skeleton doesn't get healed by it. Now to find out if he's going to heal Moby with it. Hopefully he stabs her in the eye just for the lulz.

I don't understand the tone thing. You mean as in inevitable peril? Because for me the tone in phase 3 had a cold finality to it, while the current scene is full of hot action. Also gore.

Well, so far (page 33) Buzz and Glyph died and there's a fair chance Moby finally dies, too.
Also Brion said the 3 main characters are going to be together soon so there won't have to be 3 different arcs any longer, so Crest lives.

I call anyone currently held up by Melter/Shade will live. Afaik that's Crest, Regina, BM and Melter himself.
Moby is definitely going to survive (though I really want her dead), having to deal with intense trauma. An author doesn't drop someone like that before harvesting all the delicious drama from them. She is SOOOOO going to blame herself for tipping Suspiria over the edge and causing all this with her stupid emotions.
And Suspiria is going to live as well. I don't know what BM did to her when she covered her in black mass, but there is no way Melter and BM let her die.

Oooooh, page 33 just went up! ^^
Yes yes oh god yes kill her kill her!!! ;D ;D ;D

I don't understand why Melter is just floating there, letting Shade holding him despite her losing strength. Can't they just fly up and out? If so, then he has some serious balls for staying in there anyway. And why doesn't he cling to a wall to reduce the burden on Shade? Such a weird guy.

Flipside Discussion / Re: Flipside Live Action Series

How about you start small? Pick out some scenes you'd love to see in live action and see if it works out. For starters you can aim for a scene that takes 10 to 30 seconds. Then you can see if it works for you and for the community. It also doubles as a nice advertisement for the comic if the result is decent.

What is it you would like to see come to life? Is it
a) action-related? Seeing Bernadette's Split Rose in action would be fascinating, though very challenging to pull off convincingly. I recently watched the very first Highlander movie and was like "Oh my god is THAT supposed to be swordplay on a professional acting level?" Or try watching the old Star Wars movies again. Good swordplay seems to be insanely difficult to pull off.
b) design-related? I.e. inviting some cosplayers to do some dialog, comedy, drama, mystery revelation or otherwise? That would certainly sound doable.
c) fanservice-related? Sex is one of the dominant topics in this comic, but if that's the first thing you do with live action it might lead to negative feedback.
d) special effects-related? Starting from something seemingly simple like the flying sphere Bernadette's friend has to Bloody Mary vomitting a fear-inducing... thing, to blasts of magic and explosions in general, to Q'Talda's barrier + her death spell that eats the enemy. That sounds super difficult as well.

Depending on what you want to do, it varies from being doable task to being an insanely huge task. I think it'd be quite a bit less insanely huge with animation (especially money-wise), but still tons of work.

So, what is it you're contemplating?

I admit that there is a sexiness to bloody Moby. That's all she seems to be good for.  ::) Though personally I find Bloody Mary and Suspiria way hotter, because they're super strong but their personalities are so adorable. Moby's polar opposite, basically.  8)
