Except you can't prove it's a magical sword. If Bern had the other then maybe though.
But Grant sold his sword, and for money he bought booze and women for some long time it seems which killed his liver, so actually it would point that even one sword is a really pricy artifact to get.

I will just blame the whole pressure of the situation for Bern to not be able to think this through, and just panicked going with threat route.

Now since Colonel Sanders entered the scene I see it can go in three ways...
Bern will give up since her father got cured, he didn't break any laws, and Bern will take whole blame on herself.
Maybe she will continue this longer and become wanting criminal with her father on her side to escape from this country jurisdiction.
Or after explaining her situation they will work things out without involving the Enforcers.

I guess it's a typo in the image link, showing Chapter 34 Page 19 instead of Chapter 35 page 19.
Seems to be a typo then...

Who else hears the theme from "Bodyguard" going where the healer ask Bern to be her hired help instead of these guys to enforce her safety/business?
I'm kinda curious if Bern will go fully with the threat now.

I'm not gonna lie, I can't wait for this arc to end. I'm not a big fan of Grant as a character and Bern shackling herself to him, even as her father, is wearing thin on me.
I think there's no single person, Bern included, who likes Grant current character...
But I think that Bern would do the same not only for Grant but to a total stranger which she would stumble upon dying on the street where no one else would try to help him/her.
That's her own moral code, which seems to overwrite the law codes of this materialistic country.
I like seeing that Bern decided on the drastic kind of action.

I have no idea if Bern would view it this way but...

Refusal to help someone who's dying can be considered 'murder' in a way. So, threatening the healer with violence in order to stop her from 'murdering' her father by letting him die... that might just be okay in Bern's eyes.
In a way it is, and I think that Bern now could snap and make her own version of justice against the healer, injure the guards and then force the healer with a sword against her throat to do the deed, but that at the same time would mean she broke this place only law, her own code too, and could become a wanted criminal with a personal responsibility to take care off...
That's one of the directions.
I'll admit I didn't expect the healer to make such move, she in a way is forcing Bern to act and cornering her, may it be just a form of extreme negotiatons?
She knew right away that Bern didn't have money and that she couldn't get it in the time so why she even agreed to keep the old guy?
Also as totally crazy prediction, maybe Bern could try to robe Polly house for the money out of desperation?

Limiting the time to 15 minutes for getting the money seriously limits what Bern can do.
Polly is away for a day so that route of help is locked, May won't answer her so that's gone too.
So Bern did the most obvious thing and gone to talk with one person who talked to her without asking for money and rather as a favour to Polly who he knows.

As for possibilitis how she can get 800 golds in now maybe 10-12 min left?
The most logical answer is to loan it from someone and sign some form of contract.
If this city is all about being materialistic and the money and compensating first for all kind of services with it, then for sure there are people who loan them.

What Bern can do?
Fight/bodyguard or use her body as a woman, and nothing else.
I'm for sure signing Bern off from any kind of gamble/thief/bard/con artist but also a killer for hire action.

So a possibility as signing as Enforcer for a contract for some time and getting money upfront for doing that may be some outcome.

Also since the whole city is set in no force/violence policy aside of Enforcers, then I would be pretty sure that there are some illegal fights going somewhere so people could vent off the rules and earn money on betting and such. Maybe Bern could sign a contract to fight in them... That's second possibility in my mind, but of course it would be illegal, and while doing it Bern would break her moral code.

The other is that for sure there are some kind of brothels or strip clubs where Bern could work for signing some shady contract for quick money upfront, but that I think even more would break Bern moral and ethic and especially her personal code on much higher level than just being a fighting thug.

And the last thing is which maybe the easiest outcome, is to simply sell her second magical sword in some pawn shop, and for that save her father(if selling the first sword gave her father a big sume of money for booze and whores then for sure it may be worth of something), but then she would have to stay here for a while to earn money to buy it back, and then also there's the second weapon...
I suppose this method would be the least wrong of what she would have to do.
But since Bern is outsider then she can be cheated by people pretty easily.

And if I recall right there's also Moss and Fata combo travelling, who could help Bern with their fake money illusions if met.

I can't wait to see what route author will choose here.

Edit:
Seeing newest update with money=life in this city...
I wonder how this works in the terms of loans, it's obvious now that Bern need an enormous amount of money which normal people won't be able to lend her, like this guy having just around 100 gold max...
So I would bet this will go into the loan shady business, maybe around 10 min left and Bern will need to spend her last money on random people to get directions to get to such place.

I'm kinda surprised that Bern didn't think about selling her sword as alternative like her father did to get money.

I would bet that such loan people would evaluate Bern how worth her life is in money and then she will have to sign some contract, if let's say Bern life is worth of 400 gold pieces for them for a year, then Bern would be owned by them for 2 years to pay of the taken debt. But for sure her desperation and time limit will push her to do something stupid which later Polly won't be able to solve out, and the guy's words will come true.

Also Brion you ever thought about activating comments under the comic pages like most webcomics have?
Comic discussions here are pretty dead compared to the past activity :-\

Finally made catching up and that's some one hell of depressive story point going currently...

May got kidnapped to be changed into sorceress(maybe that's a positive), while poor Bern as always has the worse side of coin...
Dying father, no money, most of people around being materialistic jerks...
I don't see much of choices for her here, either try to join the same group Polly did to earn money in kinda lawful way, but that I suppose would take too long, and I don't see any other job for a bodyguard here to do; then try to rob people or as worst whore herself out for the quick money, but both will seriously conflict with her living code...

If Polly suddenly won't show up, then Bern is done for.

So by puting that dark cell into Suspiria brain, they completely changed her into total justice freak?
She really sounds that soon she will judge other cause they have inproper hair styles...
I really wonder how much the person subconcious desires play the role in this change, remembering that that friend/ex of Bern was turned into a men killing machine, and that Bloody Mary turned into human eating monster...
So May who by default doesn't feel any emotions should be the best candidate for a full successful merge.

Spiked Vagina

Well we wanted to see Crest loosing his pesky virginity with Suspiria, so...

Maybe not in such way, but getting raped by a horny demon can too work :D

Bloody Mary beginnings were much more gruesome and more bloody...

We don't know yet what type of monster, aside of horns everywhere, Suspiria changed into.

Ah, why she has her bra and undies still on?
Demon girls don't need such limitations :P
Hmm, seems looking in her eyes she is already the monster class like BM where only death can cure her...
"Daemonette Suspira"
I quite like the soun of it.

Looking at gradation of monstrosity traits in captured subjects, first we have that Man Eater, who just kills men but still looks quite normal, then we get Bloody Mary, who only can live by eating human flesh, has insane regeneration and strenght, now we will get a horny demon Suspiria who may share the same traits with Mary, but also is a very powerful sorceress...

If I recall correctly they create these monster girls by putting some kind of "dark cell" into the subjects, possibly diretly into their brain which then affects whole organism, as some kind of permanent enchantment.

But I think Suspiria is too unstable mentally to "evolve" properly into the new being.

That leaves May as the best subject to survive the process correctly.

Bern is away with her own problems, now they will have Suspiria monster on the run as a distraction, so no one should notice that May is not here for quite a while.

Next pages should be intense.

Dos it matter?

Seems she will find herself in much more difficult situation she ever was before, and we will get save a May arc going, while from May perspective we will learn about the Thin Man up close.

Maybe May will be the first one who will fully merge/accept with that dark cell?

Or Shepard will show up...

I'm getting excited, if I guess correctly of what Melter is saying, it means he will have to fight with that Shepard guy from Phalanx to get a chance on getting May, cause I think that other guy is too following May while being invisible.

And that rather won't be as easy as getting rid of the current victim.

He got what he deserved for spying on ladies in the bath :P

Regina is not wrong here, May is.
She lead her a bit too much and made a bit too many shocking revelations here.

First she takes Regina in the bath, then she complements her, then reveal the secret that she likes her and is attracted to her sexually, she also took advantage of her and kissed in the past, and she would gladly eat her out cause she would do that to all interesting people/friends loving them at the same time.
With such appraoch she basically pushed Regina expactations unknowingly to the limits, and in the end she shoots her down saying that she have to stay faithful(I kinda find it strange that she didn't say I want instead of I have) to Bern cause she loves her the most and she forces herself for their relationship to work.
And then as a result it is not surprising at all for me to see how Regina acted.

May acted a bit selfish here on that telling the truth high status, not considering even for a moment that Regina may like her too like that.

My inner pervert is blushing!
Go Regina, go!
 :-*
So now both Bern and May were kissed by people they are rather fond of, Bern so far didn't falter, now it will be interesting to see what May will do.

Or it was just Regina trying to see how it would feel?
If that rocked her world or was worse than kissing her past boyfriend, so maybe just an experiment.

Assuming May is indeed pansexual and desiring of polyamorous relationships, I'm curious to know whether or not she'd be able to comfortably pull them off.  I find it hard to believe that May wouldn't become jealous if any of her partners formed deep emotional and physical relationships with others.  Her desires are ambitious for that reason, as well as for the assumption that she will be able to be aroused enough by all of her friends to enjoy sex with all of them.  It seems more like wishful thinking than a practical solution.
That is one thing I want to see touched in the comic, we know Bern is jealous of May, and she allowed for cheating to happen so May as younger one would simply crazy out for it to pass with time, but she hated it on personal level.
But is May capable of being jealous over Bern if she became intimate with someone else?
From all we got of May and her philosophy here she shouldn't, she rather should be glad that Bern found another nice person to be with in such relation and connect.
I kinda want to see their relation brake fully, cause personally I don't see a proper exit in it, in Bern place(since I'm a happy monogamist who thinks being loyal is the most important thing), if I would really love Maytag I would simply let her go, knowing fully I limit her happiness, and that she can't be truly happy with me due to her true nature, at the same time knowing I would never allow her to sleep around with other which would dimnish our special connection with time.

So indeed it's pansexuality, basically May wants to sleep with anyone she is friends with and/or finds interesting as best way to maintain the positive feelings between them...

Really Bern I feel so sorry for you, I really doubt that keeping such free bird in monogamous cage bound by love will ever work...

I wonder when our two love birds will realise fully that the relationship between them will never work exactly due to May and also Bern nature, I kinda doubt that May will be ever comfortable in longer time with such restriction to be bound to one partner, or I really doubt that Bern would stand any longer way being with May if she would give her green light to do it with other people.

Regina's reaction is kinda cute, especially that 4th panel how she touches her lips...
She wants it bad, or I'm reading it wrong ^^

But May doesn't consider herself as bisexual?
Or at least she doesn't limit herself as one, so she is pansexual then?
Or maybe it's the other way around and she's asexual who takes her partners sexuality into consideration and mimicks them for that pleasure factor?

So it's about wanting to eat Regina out after all :P
So May indeed still loves her judging from all this blushing and secrecy rather strongly, Bern doesn't know about it, also that last panel look...
We need them to get reunited, I kinda want Polly to meet May and see how that would play out.

I'm a bit disappointed in May here, I thought she would say in a bit cliche way that honest love towards Bernadette without all these lies and cheating is the best feeling she felt/had from some time...

But if now May addiction she digs is telling truth towards everyone and be honest with her feelings...

First she was emotionless kid.
She discovered friendship, and how good the positive connection with another human felt.
So she mimicked that through becoming jester and making more people happy, so through that got more friends.
Then May discovered wonders of sex and sexual freedom and that became her pony - nature, joining with so many people on this more or less primal level in pure fun with only positive feelings in mind had to be the biggest kick.
Then May fallen in love with that guy who left her and then with Bern and her free love towards all interesting people habits became cheating and something she maybe stated to enjoy less and less till Crest shout her that in the face.
And then May discovered wonders of being honest through the spell which turned into what we see in current pages...

If indeed May would do it with Lucient at some point then for sure I would like her even less, if that was the hidden truth here.
That would be the blow, maybe it was Lucient who became less interested in Regina cause he fallen for May?

I'm betting that May simply will tell Regina she feels attracted to her, and maybe even loves her.

Now the question here is how Regina will respond, maybe that she knew all the time and it was the reason she left Lucient having May in her mind wanting to confirm things?
We saw Bern had her temptation phase with Polly where her first true love was indeed mutual.
Question is what May will do if her love/attraction/crush towards Regina would be at similiar level for both parties.

Hmm, I don't think that Regina's infatuation with May, which is clearly visible, is that of sisterly nature ::)

Does Regina even know that May is in commited relationship with Bern?
I'll admit I don't remember if that was brought to her attention during book 0 adventure or when they reunited recently where May was alone on stage without Bern around...
I wonder how much she really knows.

Seeing that last panel face, maybe she'll try to make a move on May?

Maybe it happened like that cause everyone is using "adult" more agessive style of fightning totally forgetting about defensive basics which Bern simply mastered as Split Rose into her own style?

I kinda would want to see Bern fightining her father with her current style to see the result.

It's still a bit silly that Bern style is considered childish while all other knights couldn't deal with that guy in beginning chapters where Bern defeated him in instant.

Bern at most is using her opponents attacks in her own favour which is all what self-defense is about, her strenght is to provoke enemies into attacking her(like she did with Mary), while her style vs opponents who don't attack her in blind rage is much less effective where she has to impovise outside of her comfort zone.

Looking at previous pages, just poor Bern...

Her philosophy, fighting style, idealistic father figure got literally destroyed completely in this chapter, plus now also the father looks to be dead sick...

And she needs to find that sword too and try to learn an adult fighting style.

She never gets a brake :P

I like the father backstory, not full jerk figure as he looked at start but rather just a broken realistic pessimist who just tried to deal with his current life in a way he can cope.

Problem is that Bern needs the sword too to be able to fight with mages

Yeah... what gives anyway?
Why would she need that? There is no sorcerer that urgently needs slaying.
Did she just, like, want the second sword "just in case" she needs to slaughter some mages or something?
That's weird for someone whose whole shtick is counterattacks only, isn't it. Why the hell does she want that sword at all?
Cause one sword doesn't work at all and it's need it's pair?
Also remember that the old guy said that this trip will help Bern to grow up but also she would need to learn some new style cause her current one is childish, and let's face it if Bern wants to be May knight then she needs some counter weapon against mages.
Or the whole sword thing is just a big fat lie which that old guy fabricated just to push Bern into looking for her father and learning the truth.

Yeah loosing Bern and her mother had to be the final impact, but maybe the guy gradually started to dislike knights much earlier(cause from inside he saw the true faces of some of knights), where that Bern plus lover loose simple pushed him into dropping everything and do what he does now...

Problem is that Bern needs the sword too to be able to fight with mages, so let's hope that this father after sleeping a bit will awake a bit more sober to talk properly or at least try to recall to who he sold it.

And also he would tell them his real story.

She based her whole life around her vision of who he was and now it's being shattered around her.

She based her entire life around what she assumed someone was like.  Now she's learning that he's an actual person and not this crazy ideal she's built up.  It's her own fault for building up someone she doesn't know at all into this paragon of what she wants to be.
Try to put yourself in her situation she's a little girl raised and living in a brothel where she sees all ugliness coming from people, since that's not a pretty place for sure to be for a little girl.
Now she is visited and trained by some guy who is acting decent enough for her to admire him as a father figure, then we can also assume that her mother too speak higly about the guy enforcing her daughters visions, wanting to give her daughter some kind of moral compas figure in life.

So Bern build her life upon this idealised version of perfect father knight wanting to follow in his footsteps, she already got a cold shower from the Knights where she had to rearrange her ideals in life, now to fully shatter the picture she meets her father who was not a perfect knight at all, who now is just a fallen knight, who drinks, and has everything in the ass, and now will tell her the real story.
Life changing much?

I can't blame Bern here, she is desperately holding to last good moments from her childhood, even if they were not real, they were real for her.
