That sad-faced skeleton is so hilarious! ;D

@Bulma:
Oh right the healing sword. If it can counter Death&Decay, a stoner surely is no problem.
Interesting that the skeleton doesn't get healed by it. Now to find out if he's going to heal Moby with it. Hopefully he stabs her in the eye just for the lulz.

I don't understand the tone thing. You mean as in inevitable peril? Because for me the tone in phase 3 had a cold finality to it, while the current scene is full of hot action. Also gore.

I actually totally called it. It seemed like that sword is like Sesshomaru's Tenseiga. Heal the living, hurt the undead/demons.

The pervasive despair, I mean. The feeling that we, the viewers are watching something hopeless. Of course, if Phase 3 is any guide, not really the case.

The action is more active, yeah, but the whole deal where super-cool stuff happens, but nope, fails. Buzz and Glyph being all heroic are two good examples. Then it was Melter actually losing grip. Crest is the first guy so far that succeeded in doing something awesome with nothing poking out and impaling him... (here's hoping that thought isn't interrupted)

Although an earlier arc DID say Mary dies tragically at some point. Maybe she dies saving the rest?
Oh. Who said that and when? Did you mean someone in an earlier arc predicted the future or did Brion disclose it during an arc discussion?

It was RIGHT after the end of the Mary eating May's arm arc.

They mentioned Mary settled somewhere for awhile, and then said something like that. But I can't seem to find it...

Might wanna try starting small. Do a Book 0 and try the main only once you're further along with the series so as not to go into sidetrack hell.

Depending on whether you decide on live action of anime style, the aesthetic is a big thing. Honestly, the latter, I can see more of a 80s/90s vibe while the live action is more like Game of Thrones (but I imagine your budget isn't enough to do convincing scenery and effects for live action). I remember some of your settings being over-the-top especially some of your cities.

Wait, that's still an option?

I know she went all "stony faced", but there's a good chance she can still see and hear. The sword itself may also have an impact. We do see Crest reaching for it a few scenes earlier. The tone of this is sorta like 3rd phase of Dark Cell but for us and for most of a chapter though. Here's hope someone does something.

Why all the hate for Moby?  I think if she survives, {which I truly do hope so} she is going to likely have a psychological break down!

We all have people we like and don't like. Human nature is not impartial, as much as we might want it.

I don't like Moby cuz she's all homewrecker for the cute Crest/Suspiria thing going on (cute sweater scene OR rapey date), cuz she was a real (w)itch to someone who had serious issues with being teased in school, the whole misusing her magic to forcibly restrain and strip Crest, and her tailoring designs for May just sucked.

I'm seconding SirBananaPie's bet. As strong as my hate for her is even still, she's suffered enough (except for trauma). Regina is a Book 0 character, and Crest is early arc Book 1. Although Brion COULD kill those two off, the impact to the story would be so great as to turn most people off Flipside. Plus, she hasn't really stepped into her role yet so she's kinda still kinda a copycat of May. Melter and Mary are basically our remaining links to the Thin Man. Although an earlier arc DID say Mary dies tragically at some point. Maybe she dies saving the rest?

Why it's important to pay attention to details.

May's hand that got regrown, was done by "mirroring". But what about Glyph's legs (and whatever else got gobbled by the Pit)? If he does survive, he'll be a complete wreck. I'm not sure they'll be able to regrow what he's got, so they'd have to do a Six Million Dollar Man thing on this guy just to get him to walk right.

It's a garbage collector sink thingy.

If I had to say, I'd say it's mostly her depression. She wants to kill herself and pretty sure her friends are untrustworthy now.

Remember, the number is 1-800-273-8255.

In term of what seem like the natural defenses of the pit, probably turning from flat ground into a pit (usually enough to make most people fall to their doom), eating artifacts, and priestmonster that keeps coming back. The whole spikes popping out of the wall, the fell of rising tide, that the guy was able to pop up from nowhere and eat the stretcher bed, the skeletons, and the blender probably not.

For one, some of these things contradict certain things. For instance, if you have a blender, you probably don't have skeletons, since the blender grinds stuff up. And it seemed like the pit was more a darkness that swallowed stuff up, not a grindinv machine. It was more about negativity and not supposed to be about punishment. And then there's the clear contradiction of the wall spike being active while the music was melting some faces. That pretty much reveals a second force immune to the music.

The question is, does Crest wanna talk to her and try to cheer her up, or is Melter wrong about it being a bad idea to put her in the pit and things will be better off without her?

They ALL gonna need some serious therapy...if they get out of this...  I feel worse for poor Moby!

It's an actual rule of fiction. There's no therapists.

I predict everyone dies, but...

Long version: I predict, as they mentioned before, Mr Creepy Priest is doing some kinda ritual, and we've seen two different versions of the prison, one normal, and one a bit less so. I think he's eating power, and it'll require them catching on sorta like 'Twas the Night Before Mxymas on "Lois and Clark" or Déjà Vu All Over Again from "Charmed" where they Groundhog Day loop.

...That or Crest saves just Suspiria, and she saves everyone (see theory 1). There's definitely a reason for two different towers. Some sorta split reality stuff going on.

Oh no, I meant all power goes to the creepy priest dude. Like he gets to demoralize them or something.

Aside from that, two things really worry me, that the pit might be rising, or that what sprayed on them... isn't blood.

If bards in D&D had those kinds of anti-evil songs, everyone would take the class.

Yay, for morale boost! Also, don't die...

Ummm, remember how he's been using Bloody Mary clones?

He seems able to bounce back from injury like crazy and likes to munch on people. Also has sharp claws. This sounds familiar...

The pit itself seems to shatter at least lesser magical items, and add powers (Mega-manning) to Mister Creepy Priest.

They need to save everyone at all costs because anti-bards really suck. But especially save Suspiria because reality warping powers would be a bad thing. Which reminds me...

From what we know, Bloody Mary has died numerous times to the pit, and it's safe to say Suspiria has died at least once.

Getting a Bravely Default vibe here.

But don't get depressed or anything. This is super-happy time cuz good morale.

Probably not.  ;D

I'm not convinced there is a "right choice." Everyone is in danger from this guy. He needs to save the musician, the other jester Regina, Moby, Glyph, his gf, and himself. And honestly , the only way everyone can get out is if they set aside their jealousy (I know they're all jeally for Crest) and whatever else is up, even if they don't get along, and work together against the common problem. The Pit. Either that, or everyone fails.

(For the record, deus ex machina does not simply refer to something being OP, it's an out of nowhere "wtf?" situation that resolves everything when stuff is in a corner. This means any pre-established power of Crest, which is basically his sword and his analytical ability, doesn't count)

Really? I felt the complete opposite about Vennice. I honestly didn't connect with her as a character.

I do think Crest will help save everyone, probably from the sword being somehow toxic to these critters, or just from reversing the damage. So if Crest can't defeat them with his sword, he probably can keep people from dying left and right.

Suspiria on the other hand, is made of deus ex machina, if she saved the day, she could probably do it in an incredibly OP way. There are no therapists though, and she basically has major issues right now.

I totally forgot about Regina btw.  And didn't remember this guy's name. That alone tells me these two are basically Red Shirts, except for the fact that other people would miss them (way too much story connection for Regina).

My vote is Crest & Suspiria, Mary & Melter, and Regina. Moby and Buzz and Glyph, probably not.

The reason I don't think it's a dream is that Melter and Mary came to intervene. And this guy clearly appears to be their enemy. The idea of it all being a dream doesn't really pan out, as previous chapters had them plan to enter the town. Honestly, this is way closer to deus ex machina than anything Crest could do.

I'm not certain how being actively munched on by an evil beast if gonna affect his tune. I don't like this...

I was gonna do a poll, but couldn't find that option.

Back when I watched alot of horror films, I used to guess at who survived the monster/murderer/curse/whatever.

Since I said in the thread, I was gonna do a poll, I'll just straight up ask what people think.

  • Nobody survives
  • Just Crest
  • Just Suspiria
  • Just Melter
  • Just Mary
  • Just Moby (somehow?)
  • Crest & Suspiria
  • Mary & Melter
  • Crest & Mary (Crest loves monsters, so now he has a sweetie that could just eat him up  :-* )
  • Crest & Suspiria, Mary & Melter
  • Everyone lives (even the guy who just got stabbed)
  • Everyone lives. Except Moby, cuz I hate her.

I think that's everything.

If possible, you might look into some sor of free digital editor (like GIMP) and make a sort of premade sprites (similar to what I do in rpgs). Each character would take dozens of poses but when it's time to anime, all you do is add that to a layer by importing to the thing. This would take a lot of time at the start, but once you had poses from each character, as many as needed, an average thing would take alot less time. For instance, if Maytag has a distinctive run, the only time you'd draw different is for a sprint, so animated would make sense if you finished prebuilt characters.

I'd say try Book 0, and see what works. Also if you need voice actors, one of the big advantages of animation is they don't need to be on set. When I was making Oracle of Tao, I hired (well they were volunteers) voice actors from UK and Scotl using something called StarNow.com

Basically whatever you do, figure out how to do it time and money saving, so you cab keep doing it.

Up to you. Personally, I think fantasy series are logistically hard to do (the special effects deal) while those same actors can do an animated show (already proven you can draw). There's also the time expense, but if you can manage to keep up with the comic, and do other projects, then yeah go for it. I think I'd prefer animated to live action, because I'm anime fan.

However I just did a quick search. Animated shows are usually done in batches, so it takes the same amount of time to do one episode as 12 or 24. This is with a team and it's hard to wrap my head around. Generally speaking, you set aside about a year for a season because it's a labor-intensive process. Live action with all of the stop frame stuff of special effects, has to look real (different from cartoon drawing), so while you could just get actors, and it would take less time than say animating, it might still be labor intensive.

I'd say do research into both, see which best suits your needs.

I'm liking that whole whistle scene, reminds me of the Abhorsen series. The whole bells thing.

Uh oh, don't give the author ideas, I guess!  :o

Hey Brion, we should do a vote.

Like, how many people want this chapter to go totally Grimdark, with everyone dying?

Not that I do, but I think it would get ppl involved and stuff. Too many people expecting Crest to survive cuz he's hero, we need some added tension, right?  :o

Her power isn't off the charts. It's just out of control. Melter implied there were even dissolving tests for such power, meaning there are in fact "charts" for it.

I honestly think there is alot of stuff that is different from what we've been told previously. Like for one, demons do exist (and this creep here is one of them), and two, probably curses aren't actually curses at all but some sort of human mutation to demonic energy.  Eye might in fact be able to control her power. There was another thing I thought about in regards to this. What happens when her powers meet Bern's swords? Do they suck it up? Or does it overcome her?

I actually have The Complete ElfQuest Volume 1. I was going to get volume two, etc. But then I realized that it was a self-contained story (the story to find a new Holt, and the realization that their clan, not a location, was the Holt; the story of life, death, and a sort of extended life with those ancient elves; but more importantly, the story of characters, of Skywise, (the human shaman), Cutter, Leetah, and even Rayek, Bearclaw and Treestump, and the depraved Winnowill and Door) plus I was poor.

I like the whole grand story, heavy with metaphor. I think I know what the Pit is, but I'll let Brion tell you (hint: it has something to do with depression). But I also think it might be a subjective metaphor (represents different stuff to different ppl).

If theyare supposed to get together, the anti-magic crystal being gone kinda puts a damper on getting past Eye's aura.

I'm more sad that this is another Crest group chapter, 3rd in a row...
For some reason it got boring for me, seeing Vennice killed off for drama sake didn't help either.

Maybe Brion got bored with May and Bern and Crest became the MC for real?
:P
It's really strange that last time we saw May it was around 1 year of our real life time ago (august 2017), and Bern almost around 2 years ago (september 2016). And this chapter content means that next half year of Flipside updates will be again all about Crest storyline.
Where's the variety of the 3 people stories being separated as it was at the beginning to change perspective?

They're doing it by character development. Bern we had her get through the whole Arena deal, May had to get out of the Dark Cell, Crest has to face the Pit.

All said, I love this page. It kinda reminds me of one of the pages of Elfquest, and there is a very poster-quality feel to the last panel.

Well, it doesn't strictly speaking NEED to have an end. Some of the newspaper comics just kept running every week. Or you could go the roue of Cerebus, dragging your comic out literally kicking and screaming.

Most people don't like downer endings, but neither downer nor happy is really consistent with Flipside. It's kinda film gris, so to speak.

Supposedly in the news, there's been a rash of suicides. I, being highly skeptical, think they were murders made to look that way.

It can't be suicide if someone uses a hypnotic voice to make you throw yourself in, after all.

Probably second. Psycho chef for Thin Man gives him all kinds of test subjects in exchange for her  getting to play with them when he's done. Sounds kinda pit demon to me.

Demons from the vorpal sea.

Sometimes the high rank sorceror and the researcher are both wrong, and the priestess is right (even though she was wrong that Bloody Mary was one).

Also, I don't like the tar baby look of this. Like this guy might try to suck Melterin to his body.

Throwing people into the pit solves everything!  :-*

Didn't he throw Bloody Mary in there repeatedly? Maybe it's some sort of temporal vortex. Otherwise, nah, don't listen to this guy.

Update: So that guy is basically a creative writing teacher, who thinks all OP characters unbalance the story. Listen you, we care about interesting characters. As long as the story moves forward with no writers block, this quaint notion of "story balance" is nonsense. That's what kept high fantasy from really expressing itself for at least a century.
