Given options B and C have been explained in detail, I assume in the next few strips we'll find out what A would entail. Just as B and C turned out differently from how they were initially described (B being worse in that it would be a 3-on-1 fight and no healing; C being slightly milder in that the form of torture and execution was set to be what some already go through), A might be different as well (although probably on the worse side).

As for the disadvantages of B, if she had both swords, would that help reduce the odds against her? I seem to recall there was something special about them, but can't remember what it was or where we were told about them.

Of course, if she'd had Suspira's sword of healing (now weilded by Crest), then B would have been the obvious choice :) Especially if she was agile enough to get the three opponents to unintentionally land most of their blows on each other.

There are merits to Option D - especially if Warden gives her the second sword. Sure it's the longer route, but given the fights are a spectator sport, displaying cool / unusual tactics (or badass levels of skill with the dual blades) could draw more than the average number of spectators for a match at that level, so over a month or two she may attract sufficient spectators for The Warden to consider bumping her up to C (or above). Use tactics that disable the opponent for a few hours, but don't cause lasting damage - thus playing to the letter of their law, but retaining the upper hand in terms of control over her own destiny.

or possible even throwing a fight intentionally so the house can make a killing in the side betting on the matches!

That's quite plausible - after all, Bern's established a certain reputation (namely reluctance to fight), so it's likely the majority of bets would be placed on her opponent. If she loses, so what. If she wins, the house makes a killing and she gets a handful of points. Of course, that strategy does have one drawback: it can only be used once. Still, if it allows Bern to level up in the ranks, the rest of her matches will probably be win-win as people will want to watch them.

So what's the latest state of the betting pool on Bern's oppenent / the catch? :)

Things are about to get interesting :)

I think the Warden's intruiged by the pair of enchanted swords, so it's fairly likely she'll give Bern a chance to use them in something other than the bottom-of-the-pile matches she's scheduled for - albeit on the understanding that if she breaks out of her funk and actually shows some decent swords[wo?]manship, she'll be able to ascend the ranks quicker (besides which, effective strategies combined with double sword wielding are likely to be a crowd-pleaser so could be good for business). "You scratch my back, I'll scratch yours."

So Polly and Bern have been separated, Polly's doing wonderful in her fights, but Bern's finding her reluctance to fight is rather problematic...

...which probably means they'll find some tough, mean opponents for whom, if she doesn't fight back convincingly, will ensure she spends plenty of time being healed and not earning credits towards her release...

( Looks around, sees no-one's created the Chapter 42 thread, decides to be a devil and create it himself :D )

As I thought, we're back to Bern and Polly in custody in the Colosseum at Marvallo...

...and Berns got a visitor, fresh from her own ordeal in Lehm's Dark Cell...

This is going to be an interesting reunion :)

Getting closer to website redesign.....

Stretch Goal 1 achieved - it's now just over $7,800 so the second ($10,000) stretch goal is potentially within reach.

So that's Chapter 41 over, with Crest being given a new mission: find Suspira and talk to her.

Since Chapter 40 was Maytag, I'm predicting 42 will return to Bernadette and Polly's trials in the Colosseum, 43 will return to the Maytag vs Lehm standoff, and 44 will reunite Crest with Suspira.

Meanwhile, the Kickstarter's already entered stretch goal stage...

A few wild theories:
(a) Suspira wasn't consciously affected Qatalda, but whatever Lehm did to her resulted in her doing so,
(b) Qatalda's permanent invisibility is courtesy of Lehm. We've only known her as the bandaged one, but perhaps in the past something bad happened to her, and her heart's desire when meeting Lehm was to be invisible.
(c) It could even be that the illusion statement was to cover up the fact she doesn't have a flesh-and-bones body any more, but rather a psychokinetic field in the shape of a body. That would also explain why she's immune to her spell - because her body isn't flesh-and-bones, there's nothing for the microbes to eat.

So while we wait for the Chapter 41 thread to be created, it looks as though we're going to leave Maytag in limbo for the time being and catch up on Crest, Glyph (plus friends) and possibly Suspira.

Brion's now posted direct links to the images for Pages 2, 3 and 4 on the main page, since he apparently can't fix the comic pages while on location.

Or, for those too lazy to open a new tab: Page 2, Page 3, Page 4.

Perhaps winding Maytag up and getting her seething with anger is the key to Maytag being able to conquer Stage 1?

I think I'll nickname Marzia "Character Development" :D

Maytag's mask is likely to be related to the two personas she wears - the extremely confident, brash jester and the quite, sensitive non-jester (explained sometime way back when). We may be about to find out the trigger for her two different personas, while confronting her inner demons and learning to integrate her personality may be a useful prerequisite for conquering Stage I of Dark Cell.

Having said that, it would still be interesting to know how long it took Wotsername to conquer each of the three known stages of Dark Cell, given she's been trying daily for seven years. With that amount of dedication, it's still slightly surprising Lehm expects newbies to make significantly more rapid progress.

Whatshername seems rather arrogant - maybe she'll be a new motivating factor for Maytag.

But then again, since whatshername has been walking into The Dark Cell every day for the past seven years, it may have required as much as a couple of years of that time before she was able to get beyond Stage I.

On the other hand, given the fear factor is generated via magic, perhaps there's an easier way - to cheat (somehow). Alternatively, given what Suspira's been up to recently, bring her in and see if she can do anything magical to assist (e.g. attempting to determine the spell source, disabling it or dampening its effects).

Interesting theories, nilinet.

Unfortunately, as you surmise, the room probably requires you to physically take steps to get beyond a certain point - so if you came in on a skateboard, zone 1 would expand to x steps beyond where friction would cause the skateboard to come to a stop.

Ideally they could do with a tag-team of a very powerful unidirectional projective empath, and a very powerful unidirectional receptive empath. Except the room would probably interfere with the transmission :(

Hmm... an interesting question by Rhodes.

Also, given May's lack of progress in recent days, perhaps the Dark Cell adapts to those entering it, so making it harder for them to adapt?

So Maytag's primary goal isn't the money. I'd guess her primary goal is proving to herself she can do it (finding out more about herself en-route), her secondary goal one-upping Lehm (who's just revised his offer so she only gets the one million if she goes at least as far as the furthest any previous candidates have gone), with tertiary goals of getting her own Soundstone show and being reunited with Bern.

She's probably just going to use it to retrieve her without having to step inside.

also it's cooler than just tying a rope around her waist

Almost certainly, since she issues the command "Abstraction" (as in abstract, verb, sense 2: to extract or remove [something]).

Well, Maytag may not have learned anything useful about Lehm's "Qualia" yet, but she's learning lots about herself! I can imagine several more rounds of this, with Lehm offering her the opportunity to take the money and run each time, but she'll respond with something akin to "I can do this. I'm not a quitter." Heck, she may eventually reach the point of being able to roam around and explore freely. I can just imagine her having spent several minutes in the cell, then calling out, "Hey, Lehm. Got a torch?" or even inviting him to shut the door so she can let her eyes dark-adapt.

Heck, given the rate at which this thread's progressing, the entire rebooted adventures of a girl whose name translates as "Rabbit in the moon" may have been released on Niconico by the time we get there...

It's interesting that Lehm is sweating - maybe he's realised he might have to part with a substantial part of his fortune after all... :)

I wonder if Maytag's got any bright ideas as to how she can get over the threshold, given last time she felt rooted to the spot, pscyhologically unable to continue further. Perhaps donning a blindfold immediately beforehand, or taking a running jump into the abyss?

Perhaps The Dark Cell is their world's equivalent of an anechoic chamber - Lehm's theory being that in the silence and stillness, the candidate will be receptive to information the Qualia supposedly reveal but is inaccessible to people in a normal environment. Just as in an anechoic chamber, the complete absence of sound and light can quickly make people long for escape, with speculation that if someone was cooped up in such a chamber for an extended period with no chance of escape, they'd go slightly mad. Hence the reason for the large bribe...
