Flipside Discussion / Re: Chapter 42: Discussion

There is simply no parallel in real world history for the barbarism on display here.

Oh goodness no.  The Romans were much harder on their prisoners than this and as systematic.  What about the triangle slave trade - two or more months on a hell ship?  The cruelties of pre-modern China were for decades assumed to be a myth - they weren't.  The Vikings weren't systematic, but were quite a bit more cruel.  And don't get me started on the Harkonnens.

As strange as it sounds, its not that bad.  She seems to have some basic rights, which the folks above did not.  She seems to have the right to choose her fate.  No one is being out and out violated.  She stole, she's in jail.  The punishment of being in jail for years seems unduly harsh to our sensibilities, but the choices she has been offered clearly have been simply stolen from the less powerful in the past.

EXACTLY!  There are no crueler creatures in the world than mankind.. there is no depths to which men will not sink for sick perverse entertainment or callous cruelty!

North Korea of today, the honor maimings and murder in the tribal traditions of the middle east and India Asia, not to mention the brutality of Shariah law inflicted by zealots in the name of "righteousness", 'nuff said!

And we have the answer. The "catch" is PORN! Bern is going to have to "sell herself" in front of witnesses.

OH how horrid... {hidden lascivious grin}... that's soo evil! {Clattering noise of VCR and DVR being set up to record}!

:)

No... maybe heh.. but I think it might have more to do with killing someone inconvenient who just happens to be in the penal-system with her who the 'powers that be' have asked the Warden to make sure they NEVER survive to pay off their marks... or possible even throwing a fight intentionally so the house can make a killing in the side betting on the matches!  Surely you understand gambling is not illegal here and I'm sure there is a healthy market for it here in the land of 'CASH is KING!'

Guess I sort of nailed it!  Sheesh.  Not sure I like the idea that I can think like these twisted assholes!  :'(

THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT to these sickos in Bern's case!

They don't want a prositute... they could hire a willing and much more skilled whore than Bern would ever be. NO.  This is ALL about demeaning a proud and noble heart.  Some people get a kick out of hurting and defiling the purity of spirit in the innocent.  It is not lost on the powers that be WHY Bern is in this situation!  She is known to be a law-abiding upstanding warrior woman.. but she willingly broke the law for the sake of loving devotion to a father who hardly has been a sterling model of fatherhood.  Her actions in the arena showed her to be a gentle and unviolent young woman.  Yes she is a warrior, they know how good she is it can't have escaped their notice so for her to not give into anger or casual violence to save herself says something about her nature and heart.  She is a gentle soul without malice or cruelty or depravity in her heart...

To the twisted, jaded, and lascivious that is a 'choice' piece of meat to have fun seeing her whimper and the mental torment not to mention the shear look of shame in her eyes as her spirit is broken if she chooses option A of having to live with the memory of her flesh defiled by the perverse hands of lustful defilers; of the barbaric tasks they've set before her!

DO NOT miss the fact the Entertainment has already started.. they are likely already betting on which option she will take!

So eye guess its, 'say goodbye to the one Eye love!'

"The catch is, if you lose, you'll be my personal bitch until I tire of you."

Um... yeah.  This sounds possible... this could turn really dark fast.  The warden may like girls too...!  Especially, cute little fighters like Bern!

Sexual predators come in both genders... unfortunately!

It'll be the entire Chicago Bears defense.  They're looking for someone to put them out of their misery.

Bwahaha! {snicker}.. sorry.. I'll bet euthanasia is still illegal in that 'no force inflicted upon any citizen'.

Yeah, Bern is somehow going to be ending the Triple Bloody Mary threat with the combined magic killin' swords that Frank Zappa gives her.

Bwahahaha...{snicker}...he really IS isn't he!

Oh no! I bet it's Bernedette fighting Polly to the death, with a take-it or leave it condition. Polly will then without doubt accept, forcing Bernedette to fight her. Beat a rank A to surpass rank A. Hope not!

There is no doubt Polly LOVES Bern... and ths would be a very sad but possible end to her... cause though she might make Bern fight... there would be no doubt to us readers {at least}... Polly would let Bern kill her.

I sincerely hope that is NOT what the Warden s proposing.  It would storywise be tragic... but also just a little too pat and easy a solution... though indeed Bern would never be the same again.  I think Polly should be allowed to be around for some time for the drama of the love triangle between Bern, Maytag and Polly.

Personally I would like to get a chance to see Bern and Polly take on ALL takers in a battle Royale!  That would be cinematic and awesome!!

Oh... and Rest in Peace Tom Magliozzi... 'now your safe from all your ex-wives alimony claims'.  You will be missed... especially your laughter! :(

Technically she committed that violent crime to save someone, and even then committed no significant violence, only imposed the threat thereof.  But this seems to be the legally sanctioned government's punishment.  I myself would argue that this government is likely corrupt enough that it would not be immoral to ignore its laws (aka escape).

Possibly, but at least the new arena administrator 'seems' to be treating her as fairly as he is allowed to... he's likely the least corrupt. But carrying the outlaw mantle is a lifelong thing that should not be taken lightly.  Bern has always struck me as a law abiding and good-hearted individual... so being declared outlaw would be something she would want to avoid!

And besides, sometimes... you have to fight for what you believe in and is dear to your heart that is!  Bern was ready to fight for her dad's life... so clearly she s NOT a true pacifist!

So it was a normal dream after all. Bern, it's ok. Dreams go to strange places. Even lucid dreamers don't have 100% control over where they go. Besides, it's not wrong to have those feelings, Poly's really gone out of her way for you. It's how you act on them that could be problematic.

I am a lucid dreamer.. and I can attest to that.. its hard to control your dreams..even when your aware.  The hardest part, I find, is staying asleep once you realize your dreaming.  I know some mental exercises to induce a lucid dream.. but its not a 100% thing!  Sometimes I just drift off and wake up in the morning.. other times I can induce a lucid state.. but it takes a lot of concentration and it still is not a 100% thing.  Especially, if I want to get some actual sleep that night and wake up in the morning rested and not spend all night trying to induce the lucid state.

I can't fault Bern either.. she loves Polly as well.

"A dream is a wish.. your heart makes..."
"When your fast asleep..."

"In dreams you will loose your heartache..."
"Whatever, you wish for you keep!"

- Thank you Disney.

But seriously, Polly is a hottie.. and an old friend of Bern... so it only likely she will feel an attraction to her considering her feelings toward women!

Polly is cute in that tough-girl but hot Goth kinda way... but I think I'd still prefer the Smoking hot blonde that is Maytag!

Chrest is at home.  Technically, the Conclave has no authority there.  Yes, it's a technicality and there is likely enough firepower in that room to end a war.  But technically, Chrest can tell the Conclave to blow.

He CAN, but that would not be at all wise. Even if Q'talda is telling the truth, a little thing like "Law and order" won't matter too much to someone who can literally make it all go away leaving not even clothes behind.

Nah, I agree with Stargoat.. he should tell them to blow!  Make them show their 'true' colors... which would only prove Suspiria was right!

I've been upfront in the past where I liked where the story was going, and where I didn't groove with it, and at the same time have tried to be clear 'let the author tell their story' whether I particularly liked it or not. The main time I balked was Mayday's utterly unfunny confession to being sociopathic at the comedy competition. But again, I felt to give a pass.

I do like QTalda being alive. If nothing else, she'd made clear she was immune to her own magic. I don't like this post cliff hanger switch out of the parents being alive. I especially don't find myself interested in the needless switch out, or Suspira's 'affecting' the Conclavers. It would make even less sense with Q'Talda having an illusionary doppleganger. How would you psychically control Q'Talda from a distance? Truthfully though? I don't even care. It's too cheap a twist. This arc just makes me feel blah about Crest as well, which is a shame as he's a core char we've seen too little of.

I'll be back in a couple months when this has advanced a bit, which is the best way for a reader to deal with a story they aren't as interested in.

I don't know... but I ain't buying it.. not for exactly worded the same reason as Shazam... but close enough to not make much difference.  This is just too out there... sounds like a lie.  'The Devil made me do it', excuse is not working here.  I don't see Suspira's motivation behind forcing them to say crap that wasn't true... and then give Crest the opportunity to let her die if he felt she was too dangerous.  Such devious manipulation would usually denote some ulterior motive or need for Crest to be on her side... yet when this chapter opens.. we are led to believe Crest has not seen much of Supirira... if he was so important to put on this show for.. why is he not with her being used for her schemes???

I'm not buying it.  I think Q'Talda is lying and she certainly has enough magic to warp the minds of those about her.  But AGAIN..why all this show for Crest?  If she wanted something out of him why not mind fuck him too?

Not sure where the writer is going with this... but I'm not leaving.. I'll read and try to make sense of it.

Sigh.  You're ALL missing the BIG Picture!  Its much worse than you think!

Q'talda told Suspira she killed her parents... because THAT is what her parents wanted Q'Talda to tell her!

Look at the expressions on their faces?  It screams "guilty of abandonment" to me!  They may have had their reasons but I'll bet they are the true culprits here.

I'm not sure why he thinks beating that gang up is a good idea.
Now they'll go after his mother. Does he really think those knight muppets can keep anything at all safe?

Speaking of his mother. Just how desperate for grandchildren IS she? I mean, there's being open minded, and there's... what she's doing. Granted, Crest was introduced as being painfully shy. (Emphasis on painful) Still, treating girls, no matter how attractive, who come visit your son as potential sperm banks is really rude!

Nah I just think  its a bit of over protective motherliness! She wants to see her son.. her only son.. her first born happy and well taken care of.. so indeed she'd like to see him settled down with a 'nice-girl'.  My mother does the same thing herself on occasion...

"What happened to that shy timid boy I used to know?"

- He's probably get the hell banged out him every night by his demon-in-the-sack, Super-horned Sayian, Sorceress, lover! lol!

Actually, the answer is, "he grew up, met a girl, fell in love, got training from hell at Ishkarot, and watched his main squeeze turn into an aberration thanks to a psychotic sorcerer out of his reach, and learned that her magic teachers not only murdered her parents to kidnap her, but intended to murder her as well to keep the secret."

Yeah, that's what I said... mostly... hehe!

I can't wait to see her again... wonder if the transformation is done?  Where she was last we saw her was intense.. but still rather sexy none-the-less! :)

My guess is dementia!

also, if the source of the barrier is also maybe the source of the secret of magic, I would suspect that it would be really difficult to cheat it with magic

Uhm...WTF?  Dementia... possibly but, Maytag may be emotionally retrained..or is it sociopathic {meaning she does not know quite how to emotional relate to others} but her time with Bern I think is very therapeutic for helping her cope with that; BUT... [that all said] my point being.. I've NEVER gotten the feeling Maytag was unhinged!

So again WTF?!?!?

When I was a little boy... I was afraid of the dark.  Not the paralyzed utter fear... but the I KNOW I'm about to stick my hands into really hot water if I ...'walk into this dark room' kind of groundless phantom fear.  My sister was worse {fear of the dark would paralyze her} and because I loved... and still do love my sister I put on a brave face for her telling her... "looks sis'.. there is nothing in the darkness other than a lack of light that can hurt you!  The darkness does not change the reality of the room you know in the light, there are no monsters that suddenly appear simply because its dark!"

But it was all a sham to protect her as I never liked to see her scared or frightened.  I was her brother her protector - her hero... so I said one thing... but in truth... I was also scared of the dark.

When your a kid ... so many things are frightening... it was the late 70's and such things as the glowing single eyed teleporting tentacle monster from Space: 1999 Utterly terrified me.  Not to mention the suspenseful horror of Ridley Scott's - Alien Movie and the proto-cthulhuian grotesqueness of Clive Barker's remake - The Thing {movies thankfully my parents were wise enough NOT to let me see}.  However, the available media [starlog, fangoria etc...} made scenes from such movies available to a young very bright scifi-fan kid like me; so though I may not have actually watched the movies {at that time} the imagery only added fuel to the fire of my phantoms fears of the dark.  I would spend hours in bed at night tossing and turning unable to close my eyes because of fear of what might be in the darkness and come for me with my eyes closed.

But one evening I was laying in bed wanting to sleep and tired but too scared to close my eyes; and I grew angry!  Angry at the darkness for frightening me so and ... probably even more so at myself for being afraid of what reason told me were groundless phantom fears.  I grew real angry and decided... I was tired of being afraid.  I was only 9 or so years old... but I got out of bed left my bunk-bed where my sister slept on the bottom bunk {cause she was afraid of the height of the bunk-bed}, walked down the hallway of our 'ranch-style' home large living room and went to the center of the vast room {at least to me as a small kid}... and sat in the darkness in the center of the pitched black room {mom had these real thick velvet green drapes in the living room and the kitchen door was closed - so no light came into the room from outside with the light outs} DAREING whatever was in the dark to come for me!  I was going to face it, beat it or die! :)

It seems so funny now thinking back on it now... I came to think of it as incredibly brave for a kid to do such a thing but it worked, I was utterly horrified but as the time passed nothing happened {of course} and the grip the phantom fear had on me was broken... I was still afraid but reason could fight it and win now! Eventually the fear lessened to the point I could recognize it when faced with the dark unknown... but push it aside feeling only a mild discomfort of being in the dark and act without fear.  In life I turned to facing all things the same way as I faced that fear of the dark as a child... head on... and I do so without flinching.

I know it was a much lamented movie for many reasons.. but Cypher Rage of After Earth put it well... "Danger is quite real... but fear is all in the mind.  It does not exist.. it is not real."

A better scifi movie and much better book - Dune, "Fear is the mind killer, I will let it flow over and under and through me. I will face my fears."

And in final a rather obscure scifi reference - The Chtorr series, A Season for Slaughter, {paraphrasing here}, "Fear is a mode of mind. A emotional program your mind runs but it does not control you.  You choose what mode of mind you wish to run.  Change the mode you set your mind to and you can respond to any situation in the best mode that serves YOUR purposes... but YOU choose that mode.  It is your response.  Your brain is the computer run the mode that serves you the best!"

So indeed phantom fear is hard to over come... but it is NOT impossible.

Way to go Maytag... you rock!

LOL.

Your ALL forgetting the accessibility of extra-dimensional spaces.  May uses a fairly small one to hold all her stilettos, potions and what not...

No reason Lehm could not do the same an had her a bag of gold ... that seemingly never runs out, well until 20 million gold pieces had been removed!

But as for the task at hand ...NOW we get the catch... so Maytag has to subject herself to an experiment to enter this Dark Cell or entering this 'Dark Cell' will subject her to weird harmful mutating magics!  Not a bright position, but perhaps the Dark Cell enhances what your heart's desire or idealized version of yourself is?  Basically turning your wish on its head twisting it into something monstrous.... like whatever happened to Bloody Mary?  I'm just posting suppositions here...

Gonna be really interesting to so what Maytag does! I just hope our sexy liberated jester is not maimed!
