I'm not sure she's looking depressed and broken so much as she's missing her left eye

Hold on a minute there charles, I feel you've got a nit running around in that post and I want to pick it. Both polyamory and Maytag are a little more complex than simply desiring a "mass of bonds" which are effectively the same. May appreciates people for their unique traits, for their personalities - I hazard a guess here that this is part of what makes her a very capable poker player. Ideally yes, she'd like a mass of deep bonds, but every single one of those deep bonds she'd appreciate on a unique level; no one would ever be able to replace the bond she has with Bern, and Bern should still have every reason to feel special.

I'll try and handle some of these questions for you. I'll also handle them out of order, because I laugh in the face of coherency. First then, Maytag's reveal here (and as mentioned a few posts up) is that she's a pansexual (though it seems very out of character for her not to know the word for it somehow). This means that she's attracted to personality, or as she puts it, people she likes. Ergo physical attraction no longer matters, if she likes it then she wants to get intimate with it. Potentially societal norms have prevented her from being able to feel attraction for family members, but to be honest given Maytag's character I wouldn't be too surprised if she'd tap them.

Umber has a little more than an open relationship, Umber has a polyamorous relationship. The difference being that whilst open relationships allow for physical contact with others, polyamorous relationships allow you to start up relationships with other people as well as the physical contact. This would be Maytag's dream, to be able to have relationships with as many people as she likes in absolutely any capacity she likes. Bern however wants her to only experience both physical and (more seriously) emotional relationships with her alone.

To Maytag, Bern is the most important person in the world - desire to be intimate with everyone she likes doesn't result in liking people equally. Bern is hurt by the idea of Maytag having a polyamorous relationship due to her own personal philosophies and Maytag feels she owes it to Bern to not hurt her. So the relationship is 'set aside' for Bern's sake, despite it being far from Maytag's ideal. If Bern was able to give Maytag her poly relationship, then given the right people came along then Maytag could develop emotional bonds comparable perhaps to those she has with Bern.

One imagines this as an idea is something that might scare Bern as a concept. What Bern is (hypothetically) missing however is that every bond Maytag makes is going to be different. Bern, and the bond Maytag has with her, is unique. As is every single other bond Maytag has. Consequently Bern couldn't just be replaced.

And she doesn't want to go to the bathhouse. I don't think it is out of shyness to be honest (I think her reaction would have been different then), nor out of time constraint or anything. She says she cannot bring Crest to a bathhouse, but when Maytag calls her out on that (I'm sure he wouldn't mind) she has no counter-argument, not even a little, and dismisses the topic entirely.

I had gotten the impression her excuse there was that whilst Crest might not have any problem with the bathhouse with the three of them, she has a problem with Crest being there.

Whether or not tears were a part of Maytag's 'true' personality in her youth, I would suggest she is very much capable of genuine tears now. She alludes to it during internal monologue - where one would assume there's no reason to perform.

(There's also an interesting line on the prior page: "Well... I guess I can't blame Bern for having emotions... It's not her fault she has em!" [sic])

So at the moment I'm inclined to believe May when she says her tears are real. Other than that I'm a little confused by how to interpret the current page. She stops crying, but then seems to start yelling an apology in what looks like anger?

It's interesting that the discussion moved specifically onto talking about different personalities as masks. Intentionally or not Goffman's theories have been stumbled into. Azure Priest particularly with their talk of the different masks a cheater will wear. However I think what has been overlooked is that we all wear different masks to some extent. For instance you might have an "Internet mask", or a "Work mask", "Family mask", "Romantic mask". The idea is that underneath all these masks there's a real, innate, personality. A personality which can only come out at certain times and will be identified as real. Yet rather than being innate, perhaps it's actually yet another mask - a mask we've crafted for ourselves. Our "Real self mask".

The point is, having different personalities for different things isn't an uncomfortable concept. We do change our personalities so that we can try and get the best reactions out of people (even if that best reaction is no reaction at all). Further those personalities do become "us" over time, even if we don't view them as the "real us". The upset with May seems to be her ability to do this consciously and seamlessly, and her reluctance to ever return to putting on her "Real self mask". The problem for her I feel is that she hasn't really crafted this mask. It has bits and bobs on it, but she can't really describe it as being 'her' as there's no personality connected with it. I wonder if part of the next few chapters will be May constructing this mask for herself.

Though presumably the chic- Dex's mum came first. Unless the egg was produced from the hole in the ground. The point is there's no guarantee that Dex's mum didn't die in egg birth, and who knows what the father is up to? I suppose in a strange twist of fate the father could actually be the hole in the ground, which I'm not entirely convinced would be the most capable parent.

Now, this is a guy whose got parents that raised him right! I like this Dex already, and he's only been in 2 pages.

Or no parents, as the case might stand.

It is mildly distressing that ducky can post exact criteria which clearly Maytag does not meet (based on current evidence) and still have multiple people decide she has schitz. However since there seems to be interest in slapping her with some kind of mental disorder, I'd suggest a very early onset of schizoid (personality disorder) would make more sense.

Quote
A. A pervasive pattern of detachment from social relationships and a restricted range of expression of emotions in interpersonal settings, beginning by early adulthood (age eighteen or older) and present in a variety of contexts, as indicated by four (or more) of the following:

Neither desires nor enjoys close relationships, including being part of a family
        Almost always chooses solitary activities
Has little, if any, interest in having sexual experiences with another person
Takes pleasure in few, if any, activities
Lacks close friends or confidants other than first-degree relatives
Appears indifferent to the praise or criticism of others
Shows emotional coldness, detachment, or flattened affect

    B. Does not occur exclusively during the course of schizophrenia, a mood disorder with psychotic features, another psychotic disorder, or a pervasive developmental disorder and is not due to the direct physiological effects of a general medical condition.

However this all seems to go downhill as a diagnosis for adult Maytag.

If boys club of America or some church wants to be white exclusive, or latino exclusive, or black exclusive, or what have you, why prevent them?

Is this some wonderful line of satire, or do you genuinely mean what you just said?

Yes but in certain times and cultures, silver was considered more valuable than Gold... Or rather, Silver pieces were more valuable than Gold pieces.

If Bern really has $20,000 worth of money on her, I can't imagine that she'd be concerned about money but *shrug*

If she does have that much, maybe she's worried about having enough to still find her father and get home (although Maytag could always bring more for the return journey through the portal).

Looks like you were right. I wonder if this actually makes electrum coins the most valuable.

EDIT: WAIT! I can't tell if Platinum is more expensive than Gold or not.  If Maytag had more Platinum than Gold in her bag then that suggests it's worth less than Gold: http://flipside.keenspot.com/comic.php?i=355

Maytag also has more gold in her bag than silver, and those electrum coins must be priceless. Dealing with coins which are both heavy and take up a good deal of space one should seek to carry as many of the highest denomination possible. No - I think you were right with your initial belief that platinium is worth more than gold returning to the again initial question of how many golds in a platinium.

I've never played the game but I always liked this character. If you could draw her but with the bra open that'd be ace.

The person's original character seems remarkably similar to Harley Quinn of Batman fame to me. Right down to the name in fact.

http://www.gamingtarget.com/images/media/games/PlayStation3/Batman_Arkham_City/page/harley.jpg

I figure this was an honest mistake - unless the actual person who created her turned up for the commission. Just seems somehow unlikely and in need of pointing out.

the caption just dosen't seem to flow to me, it seems somewhat awkward.

I'll agree with this. That said I've got absolutely no suggestions for an alternative caption.

Ok, I'm no poker expert, but he only has one pair (king). Wouldn't Maytag just need "three of a kind" to beat him? We haven't seen her hand, but she shouldn't need aces to beat a pair, unless the rules for this table are a bit odd.

The only hole cards we know of is May's ace. They both have the pair of kings so those are essentially cancelled out - which is why she's announced ace high. Her other card has not hit the board and will likely prove an insignificant kicker. If as she predicted he has a medium pocket pair then he's won it. If he has just one of his cards paired then he has it. The chances of May having won the pot here are.. well non-existant really unless the fellow is trying to gift her chips.

I got the strong impression that the glass allows him to see through illusions as well as clothes. Fata Morgan casts something up so that Danzig can't see them anymore; Glyph essentially becoming invisible. Heck they could make an illusion of about 200 Glyphs and Danzig won't know which to target. This allows Glyph to get close, and give Danzig/Escher a good stabbing.

I became aware of these secret areas after they were mentioned within the comic. I became slightly obsessive and seem to remember actually trawling through the entirity of the gallery to see if any other pictures happened to link to a secret area.

I found the madman's stash on my own, and then I believe I found the maproom. The maproom rather ruined finding the last area - but I got it. I think I may have found the flipline before but not really paid any attention to it.
