Flipside Discussion / Re: Detailed map of Flipside
« on: July 30, 2011, 02:17:49 pm »
I look forward to the maps completion. :)

But I must agree with the criticism that 2,000 km is too far for two weeks of walking.  Roman legions seemed to walk 10-15 miles per day, which would equal 340 km over two weeks, and that assumes ideal conditions such as roman road movement.  (here is fun link about the logistics/timing of the movement of a Roman legion http://www.garyb.0catch.com/march7_days/march_days.html)

Flipside Discussion / Saving Bloody Mary
« on: July 28, 2011, 11:59:39 pm »
Pardon me if this topic has been covered previously.  I searched for it and didn't find it.

Right.  Bloody Mary.  She is a great character concept and my favorite Flipside story so far.

As I pine for Bloody Mary's possible return in future chapters of Flipside, I think back to Chapter 18, page 18, where Maytag tried to provide a better alternative to Bloody Mary, beyond the tragic choices of death or murder.  What else aside from Maytag's ideas, could Bloody Mary do to survive without resorting to further butchery?

We know Bloody Mary needs human flesh to thrive and survive and that she can't fast longer than a day before her bloodlust compels her to kill again.  But just how little 'food' could Bloody Mary get by with?  Does she have to eat an entire person every day?  That seems unlikely.

I suspect Bloody Mary could slake her bloodlust, though probably not sustain her full powers, if she was able to consume at least some human tissue each day.  Maybe she could survive by drinking a pint of blood.  Blood is a renewable source which could be tapped without the need to kill.  Despite what Melter claimed, maybe some pig flesh could supplement such a restricted diet, as pig flesh is remarkably similar to human flesh.

Or could minor sorcery transform pig flesh enough to resemble human flesh that it could sustain Bloody Mary and avoid the bloodlust?  Of course that option would require the cooperation of a sorcerer.  Improbable.

Could Bloody Mary feed off the recently dead?  She didn't seem picky about her diet from what little we saw so far.  A large enough city might generate enough corpses from ordinary causes that Bloody Mary could feed without needing to kill.  To gain access though Bloody Mary would have to lurk at graveyards or find some way to infiltrate the normal means used to handle the cities dead.  Mortician Bloody Mary?

Wars produce corpses that Mary could feed off of, but there doesn't seem to be any handy wars from what we have seen of the world so far.  Heck any callous enough warlord should be eager to use Mary as a weapon.  Just the production of a fear demon at the right time could break an enemy attack or turn an enemies flank and Mary wouldn't have to shed one drop of blood.

Heh, imagine Mary single-handedly breaking the siege of a large town, and in gratitude the saved townsfolk shelter Mary from her pursuers. :o  Now that's really improbable. ;)

Well these are just a few brainstorming notions.  What do you think?  Any ideas you would like to add?

I thought it might also have been a commentary as to how much the value of currency differs across national borders. I mean, wasn't 200 platinum a fairly good amount of money in Iscariot? I wonder if it's a parody on more laws and bureaucracy and its consequences. Or maybe Bernadette's general lack of street smarts.

Or maybe I'm reading too much into it. I could see Brian going for at least more depth in the world with the currency difference though.

If Marvallo is as free-wheeling as we are led to believe, I find it hard to believe the pricing for similar services would be so much higher than in Iscariot.  Wouldn't cut-throat competition drive prices down?  Of course if competition only left one company standing, a sort of "hotel trust" could develop that could force the price of a room artificially high.

Is Bern being conned by Polly?  If so it is a dangerous con since Bern must have been exposed to a variety of pricing already whether it is the price of her drinks at the bar (where Bern met Polly) to the wares hawked by the street vendors.

Based on panel 4 of this page: http://flipside.keenspot.com/comic/book0/fs05pg14.html
1 silver = 10 gold

And based on the current chapter page as of this post, http://flipside.keenspot.com/comic.php?i=1249,
1 silver = 100 platinum

In the Flipside universe, for some unknown reason, silver is worth more than gold and platinum (Due to sorcery perhaps?)

I think you are right.  The relative values of platinum-gold-silver are flipped  ;D compared to DnD.

Flipside Discussion / Re: The Criticism Thread
« on: July 13, 2011, 07:57:58 pm »
This is where you can post criticism of Flipside.  It can be about any part, or any aspect of Flipside.  Please try to keep all criticism constructive, and stay generally polite.  Politeness is expected from people responding to critics, as well.

Also, not all criticism *has* to go into this thread.  If it relates to the current chapter, feel free to put it in the chapter discussion thread.  You can also feel free to start your own thread if you feel it is warranted.

Minor quibbles

1)More monsters, please.  It's beginning to feel like the only monsters in the world are those the Thin Man makes.  (The fear demon Bloody Mary coughed up was great.)

2)The explanation Maytag used to claim immunity from pain (just accept it as another experience) I thought somewhat implausible.  But who knows, she might have just been lying to the bad guys!

On balance I think flipside is fantastic and I'm glad I stumbled over it.  I have it bookmarked as one of the few webcomics I steadily follow.

Certainly, Maytag would likely not have a problem with giving Bern her blessing for intimacy with others and could even be alright if she only heard about it shortly after the act.  But if Bern tries to keep it from her, I'd imagine there might be issues of trust.

Despite Maytag's self-confessed selfishness and self-centeredness, when it comes to the crunch she acts like a saint.  That's why so many characters fall for Maytag or become friends with her, even Bloody Mary.  So when you add the love Maytag feels for Bern I doubt May would feel badly at all over infidelity by Bern even if Bern lied about it.  At the worst May would feel mild disappointment over Bern violating her own code.

On the other hand I could see Bern tormented by guilt.  So badly tormented by guilt that even Crest would catch on to what's going on, let alone the empathic Maytag.

Of course now that I contemplate such a possibility, I find it hard to see Bern ever cheating.  She loves May too much.

The only plausible way, is if Bern thought May had left her or that May was dead.  Then when re-united with Maytag, Bern would feel horribly guilty (even though she really shouldn't, that's just how Bern is).

I wonder what Clairen's nickname was... Could it really have been maneater even back then?

...nah, Bern would have realised that an assassin with the same name would be her.

Still loving the angle of parting Bern and Maytag while tempting them with other possible partners... I'm betting Maytag resists but Bern submits to temptation.

Damn.  That's a good catch.  Why didn't I see that?

Hmm... stop me if you have heard this one before.

How about, Maytag playing a hand of poker with Bloody Mary, while in the background Melter complains, "Didn't I tell you not to play with your food?!" ;D
