Flipside Discussion / Re: Chapter 39: Discussion
« on: February 06, 2014, 07:13:25 pm »
I seem to never post unless it's to criticize the comic in some way, so I'm sorry for that.  I truly do like this one, and I'm glad the author takes the time to discuss it with the fans.  While I certainly understand artistic liberty and what the artist likes over what I do, I'd just like to voice my opinion here.

A straight punch like that from the warden doesn't get ducked (usually), it gets slipped.  A bend at the waist usually.  For example in this video, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ngZyJGy3Xkc
Check out around 1:33

Yes, that is Mike Tyson.  Offensive beast, but more importantly a defensive master.  He slips most of those punches, ducks a few wide looping hooks, and counters from there.

Oh well, just looked weird to me is all.

EDIT: Oh crap, wrong thread. Sorry, if the mods could move it.

Flipside Discussion / Re: If you like having signatures, read this!

I just restored signatures.  So if you already had a signature, it should be restored now exactly the way it was before.

Seems like I found a better way to fight the spammer!  I've been looking for a way to stop them from putting links and signatures in their profiles based on post count, and I think I've found a clever little way.

I took the user group "fresh meat," which is people who've made less than 10 posts, and I made it so that they can no longer view or edit their profiles!  This means they can't worm *any* links into them whatsoever, until they make at least 10 forum posts.

Of course, this won't stop spammers from actually posting links in the forums, as strangely there seems to be no permissions based way to stop people from posting links.  But at least those are easy to spot and delete.  The main thing is that I want to take away their reason from registering dozens of accounts per day.  I don't know if that will actually stop them from doing it, but at least now they won't get anything out of it.
Ah, it could take me a day, or a few years to hit 10 posts.  I suppose that's the only problem with post incentive, some people will spam useless posts to make the incentive.
But, compared to bots, I'd rather have it this way.

A signature is kind of like a piece of yourself.  That being said, most people quote other people for their signature.
I honestly disable signatures and avatars on all the forums I start to post regularly on.

EDIT: I don't care if you disable them, and if it kills bots, I'm all for it.

Well as has been established previously, Crest is not a particularly highly trained fighter so would perhaps not know the intricacies of unarmed combat so when he punched Orransong he just tried to put as much force into the punch as he could.  The most recent punch to the face could be explained by how the trainer was either entirely sure of their ability to hit Crest (he was entirely flat footed), had enchantments to boost their speed to a level where Crest had no possible chance to react... Or magic, it can always be explained away with magic.
Crest did have training though.  Perhaps he didn't train all his life, but he still had training.
As for the trainer, what you do in practice, you do in the when it matters.

But hey, it's a story, I don't expect flawless execution every time.

Its always bothered me about the comic.  When Crest punches Orransong, along with chapter 28, page 14's action shot, their head's down.  What if Orransong sidestepped Crest?  Crest would be wide open.  Same with this trainer.  Fighters can't rely on their opponent just taking the punch, and not blocking, or weaving.
