Pop Culture / Random Reviews
« on: October 30, 2009, 11:51:35 pm »
Just a thread if your feel like reviewing/bashing something, be it a new game, a book, some kind of article, an appliance, it doesn't really matter. Just a few obvious things I'd like to point out:
- Have some kind of actual review. While I'm sure we aren't expecting anything long and groundbreaking just avoid 1 liner yay or nay things, there are other places you can put that.
- Put all spoilers in very small text such as this so that those who don't want to see them don't have to.
- While it isn't necessary that you finish what you're reviewing *such as a book or game or something to that extent* at least have solid grasp on what's happening, for example my review of the game Borderlands, I'm a little over halfway through the game * probably more * but the game hasn't and won't really change game play wise. So I'm comfortable doing a solid review of it.
- Try not to do the review when emotional, your mood will generally skew what you're trying to say.
- And most obvious of all, State what you're reviewing, I probably wouldn't have put this if I hadn't forgotten myself just now >.>
Again all obvious things, but it's something to be reminded of.

Before I get into all of the details and guts of this post, Borderlands is a great game, if you were on the fence about getting it, or you were just thinking about it, Do it. The game is great and is absolutely worth getting, it's extremely well rounded, it has a solid level up system with a strong first person element.

The Classes:
There are 4 separate classes each with 1 unique usable ability, 3 trees worth of passive skills, and 50 levels. Each class is very customizable, The 3 different trees being plenty diverse, but at the same they all complement each, usually through the 1 usable skill.
Each class can use any of the types of weapons, so it's not restricting in that sense, while some classes have bonuses to certain weapons it doesn't make a huge difference. It's very nice in Co-op because you won't be fighting over weapons.
All 4 of the classes work very well in co-op and solo, though some are obviously better in solo play, and others better for team support.

Solo vs. Co-op
- The core game play in solo is relatively easy you'll hardly die unless you're completely reckless, while the boss fights are can be particularly challenging, dying more than once isn't uncommon, because unless you grind, the boss will usually be a level or two above you, decreasing the damage you do quite a bit.
In Co-op the core game play is much harder, enemies your level will kill you fairly often if you're close to the enemies. And if you get separated from your member(s) things can get very hard to cope. It's not a problem though because you can revive your team mates as long as you're nearby. While the boss fights are never harder than moderate, the 2nd boss of the game was beaten literally in under 10 seconds * with 3 people * we all used our action skills and he dropped like a rock.
-Item drops are not a problem in either solo or co-op play, item drops are greatly increased depending on how many people are playing, and money seems to be split between everybody evenly. *Note: money picked up, not money from things you sell.*
- Experience in co-op is Not a problem, you get Slightly more experience and the achievements you get that give you exp won't make a difference after a few levels.
- You can get gear called class mods, they can have bonuses to the Entire Team, which is a really nice thing, I've seen them vary from Damage, to heath or shield regen, to experience bonuses.

Misc Pros:
- SKILL RESET, for a menial fee you can reset your skills. This is great for later on if you want to switch up your play style, or just want to check out the other skills in action.
- Fast Travel to certain areas it extremely nice when you have go back two large zones for a quest.
- You only need the disk to start the game up, and there are no CD-keys, so with one disk you can lan play.

Misc Cons:
- The game is fairly linear and the story line is minimal
- Sometimes the quests don't activate properly, the quest markers can be in the wrong spot, and can tend to pile up quickly. *though that last bit isn't a problem just annoying*
- You get your first skill point at level 5, again it's more annoying than problematic.
- For a good amount of time you have only 12 item spaces, you find a lot of weapons and shields, expect to make runs back to town to sell things

- How much damage you deal is heavily based on your level and enemy who is 2 levels above you take noticably less damage, 3 very little, 4 or more levels are pretty much minimal even on a critical. That is good though because you can use only a moderate weapon and still get by without many problems.

and that's all I can think of right now...

If you want to see the skill trees for the classes you can go to the official site  * Here * and click on fortune hunters

Pop Culture / Roleplaying Types
« on: August 11, 2009, 07:35:57 pm »
My brother just sent me this article I got a kick out of it. If you can think of any other kind of types of roleplaying discuss it here I suppose.

The Real men, The Real Roleplayers, The Loonie, and The Munchkin

Just in case you didn't know a munchkin is a person who abuses the rules for insane amounts of min/max. Best example is Pun Pun

Free Talk / That thing...
« on: June 11, 2009, 12:52:40 am »
You know what I'm talking about right? That thing? Guess not huh.
The thing I'm talking about is "that thing" that no matter your mood will manage to put a smile on your face no matter what, generally you don't pay attention to these things. You probably have a few of these things that you don't even realize

For example, I've been in a foul mood lately, I mean a really bad mood. So my brother is opening a bunch of booster packs (MTG) and I snag a pack and open it, put the cards up to my nose, fan them, then Inhale. And MAN, I felt so damn good for a little while.

Know what "that thing" is now? Good, so share what that thing is, and if you have a ritual with it (such as how I fan the cards to put them up to my face). I have more that I'll post but I can't thing of any more at the moment.

I really need to move out of my house, somewhere out of state hopefully, but I have no idea on how to start, where to look online or anything. So I was wondering if anybody would know where to start looking.

This would be greatly appreciated.

Right so it's time I get a new headset, mines been dead for months, I've only kept it for the mic. At this point in time I don't mind spending 100+ dollars if it will actually last more than 6 months, like the other headsets I have gotten do.

Specifically I've been looking at USB headsets with either 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound as I use them mostly for FPS (Counter-Strike: Source). One of the guys that I play with swears by the Tritton brand, which only has 2 USB headsets that are almost the same exact model. But I wanted more input than just that.
The three that I was looking into:
The Tritton
The Logitech
Some odd brand I found while searching Newegg

Also in addition to a headset a new mouse is needed. The one I have has become extremely choppy and had to play any kind of long range game with. The same guy who suggested the Tritton headphones suggested the Razer Lachesis mouse. It had pretty much been a competition in my head between the Razer Lachesis and the Logitech G9x

Now if you have any suggestions for me on either the mouse or headset would be greatly appreciated.

Edit: I probably need a good mouse pad for my shiny new mouse, haven't looked at anything yet but any directional would be nice here too.

Hall of Games / Good Idea, Bad Idea
« on: May 12, 2009, 09:22:31 am »
Ok so here's the skinny on this each poster will post both a good idea and a bad idea, then the next poster will post the last bad idea, as their good idea.

Poster1: Good idea: Internet
            Bad Idea: WIFI connection
Poster2: Good Idea: WIFI connection
             Bad Idea: Shoddy routers

Just one hitch, no repeating the same ideas in a different order.

I hope this isn't a flop >.>;

Good Idea: Making sure to check the expiration date on foods before eating them.
Bad Idea: Randomly spraying questionable Whipped cream in ones mouth.

Free Talk / Challenges
« on: April 27, 2009, 08:26:03 am »
Okay, so as of late I've been looking for some kind of challenge... something along the lines of chess, but that is Not chess (obviously otherwise I would be playing chess ::)) Can anybody think of some kind of game or something, that may not be prominent or widely known in the states (or at least in this sheltered corner I'm forced to call home), but that is known in other areas?

You love it, or hate it depending on what song your playing.
Whats every bodies favorite song?
What system do you play it on?
Care to share the Online ID so Flipsiders can Jam with you? (who are on the same system)
What instrument do you prefer?
How much Downloadable content do you buy?

I guess I'll start  ::).
Ok so right now I'd have to say y favorite song is Dream Theater's Panic Attack. Mainly because I haven't gotten beating it down to a sure thing yet.
I play on the PS3
I actually have no idea if its just the name or what... if someone can clarify for me that'd be good.
I Smash rubber things with wooden thingys
Expert all the way
I almost never download songs. But there are some that I have.

... I guess if you want to talk about Guitar hero as well you could. But, we all know it is nowhere near as good.

Free Talk / Just a little rant...
« on: March 28, 2009, 09:31:21 am »
Ok so right to the point. College it cost money right? Right. This semester cost about 500$ more than it did last semester from the economy, which I expect to happen. I don't really pay much comparatively to some schools as it is a state school (I paid 1993.00 this semester). Ok.. so maybe it wasn't right to the point
I got a notice that i have a payment due in two weeks and I never actually looked at what I'm paying for. Heres the rundown:
Accident Insurance Fee 12$ sure Okay I understand this one makes sense

Credit Card convenience Fee 10$ saw this one coming cause I had to agree to it

Full-Time Tuition Spring 1688$ again saw it coming

Laboratory Fee 50$ Necessary as I take a Chem class with a lab

Records maintenance 24$

Student Activity fee 84$ This is a charge I have a deal with Everybody has to pay it, wtf is this for now? Plays 'n stuff? why should I have to pay for it if I'm not going to do it..

Technology Fee 75$ little pricey but necessary i suppose*

Tuition payment plan fee 40$

Vehicle Registration fee 10$ this is the charge that has me ticked off. Granted it's only 10$ but I'm broke as fuck right now I have NO money except what to pay my tuition with. Also I don't drive there, my cousin does but he has to pay 10$ for his too. It seems like it would be so easy to just make you pay 10$ for the dammed sticker instead of charging EVERYBODY 10$. This charge seems like a damn good way to get a couple 1,000$ extra (I'm pretty sure it has about 3 to 4thousand students per semester maybe more... Lets say about 100+ [pulling this number out of my ass] don't park maybe they get dropped off or are close enough to walk.) because nobody cares. "Oh it's only 10$ w/e"  *grumble grumble*

.... FUCK! I know it may seem like I'm over reacting after all it's only 10 dollars... but its just the fricken principle of it!.... Hate...  I mean do they charge every student for a laboratory Fee? even if they don't take any kind of science class?

Hall of Games / Corrupt A Wish
« on: March 23, 2009, 08:53:33 am »
I Believe this was one of the more popular games (then again I hadn't been in there in forever on the old forum)

Okie Doke the rules are as followed somebody will make a wish then the next poster will grant the wish but twist it horribly in some fashion then make a wish of their own.

Poster A
I wish I had an uncorrectable wish.

Poster B
Granted but since the only uncorruptable thing is nothing you get nothing.
I wish I was a real boy.

Poster C
Granted but BLAH.

(I think you get the point)

I wish I had more Vault.
