Unfortunately, we had to move from our vBulletin forum. Sonika, who has been hosting our forum until now, is no longer in a position to keep hosting it, so I needed to start my own forum on this server. I decided to just go with a free forum, and that means I wasn't able to transfer over the old database, or any of the discussions from that forum. Sorry about that!
So this forum will be a new start! Please register for this forum soon, as the old one will be disappearing shortly!
Any comments about the new forum? Please feel free to share them here.

At first glace it does seem a little more user friendly... Plus a change in scenery is always nice
Edit: quick thought are the forum titles going to remain the same?
-
Looks good.
Just a random thought: Maybe you could change some Icons (New post, no new post, hot topic, and so on) to something mor flipsidean.
For converters, if you want to convert the old forum, have a look here: http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?board=134.0
-
Yeah, the user titles have already been changed to reflect the ones from the vBulletin forum.
Yeah, I should probably change the icons.
Sorry... those converters seem like a big headache to me! I don't know if I want to mess with them...

Heck, are you happy with the layout of the areas?
This is a chance to start our fresh and cut out certain areas or include new ones if you want.
Not that I can think of a different layout, just mentioning it.
-
Pretty much. Most of the areas from the old forum are used.
-
Can we rely on Dragon The Huik and/or Draco to admin the RP area and/or fight the Legion of the SPAMMED?
...Actually, better start moving the RP stuff over before the old site vanishes.
...Damn! There's a lot of great discussions in the old site but understandable that you can't move it over. Such is life.
-
I'm worried that some of the folks who don't post every day will miss out.
-
this is sort of like the other forums I post in so feels like home all ready.
-
Moving again already? ;P
With the forum moves/my posts ratio, I'll be a virgin forever. Hahahaha.
This new forum doesn't have that nice familiar feel, but that's hardly something to complain about.
-
Whats with the stars next to peoples names? (well Under the name but...)
-
There's a lot of settings you can set in your profile to give some of it back. Such as the quick reply box at the bottom of threads.
I guess Brion will still be setting up a few defaults around the place but considering this is a free hosted setup, it's unlikely he'll have the same level of control to create custom layouts and the like, as he wishes.

That problem can likely be fairly easily remedied by simply changing which forum the main Flipside homepage links to when the appropriate time comes. Users who do not regularly post on the forums almost certainly reach it by going through the main site page - and if they don't then odds are it will occur to them to try the link from the Flipside homepage when they discover that their bookmarks no longer take them to the proper place. :)

Not a huge fan of the skin. I'll miss the old intermission Maytag with the cards. This picture makes me feel like I have to hide the window whenever anyone walks into the room.

I agree. I don't want to step on the toes of the people who like it but would it be possible to work in an alternative for those of us who'd rather have a more neutral skin?

SMF is very customizeable. And there's a lot of free stuff around. Just the question if Brion has/wants to invest the time to get every layout detail exactly as he likes it.
Just one question Brion: Is thera a reason, that you use 1.1.4 instead of the current stable 1.1.8 for a new setup? There are some security glitches for 1.1.4.
http://search.securityfocus.com/swsearch?query=SMF+1.1.4&sbm=%2F&submit=Search%21&metaname=alldoc&sort=swishrank
-
Yeah, I can work on making a new skin with a different header image.
Yeah, the reason I am using 1.1.4 is because I set this forum up over a year ago... I guess I should upgrade it, but not exactly sure how.
-
I like everything about it except the new smiles. (And the semi-emberessing picture of a miosend maytag at the top of the page, but that's already been adressed, so whatever).
They kinda suck. Any way we can get the old smiles? Or turn them off so we can just use text for them?
-
I actually very much like the look of this new forum - header and all. But I understand those who'd prefer it changed. It's a bit kinky after all.
And yes, the smileys are horrible :D
-
I think the emoticons are kind of cute. ::) D'aww. Look at 'im.

Was that back when you thought Sonika had gone MIA?
-
I like that we can delete our own posts.
-
But you can delete them in the old one. You go to modify then and it gives you a delete option.
Why? What posts would you delete if you could?
-
None specific ones. I just think we should be able to. And I didn't know that about the old one...but I also like that the quick reply isn't sacrificing anything, and that you can preview from here.
-

Yep.
As you wished, I brought the old smileys back! How do you like that?
-
:-*
-
found some new ones as well (http://www.pushupstairs.com/images/emoticon/extra3/pint.gif)
-
How's the new banner? I took the one from the old forum and modified it a bit. Like this one better?
Also, there are some new themes available now, which you can check out if you look under "profile," and then "Look and Layout Preferences." The sexy Maytag header is still available on a different theme.
-
This banner is great, too, even if I did like the old coloured one.
-
OH NO, MY PALTRY POST COUNT!!! D:
I like it a lot. New forum postin~ 8)
-
I found the old forum design more tidy and less confusing, but I remember thinking the same when we moved from the one before that.
I'll get used to it, maybe I will find it better.
I love the statistics, now I might be able to be at the top of SOMETHING. ;D
I don't think the "Who's Online" update automatically when you have it open though, which I don't like because I love having it open while looking around elsewhere and then opening it just to see if somebody new logged on, replied to something and alike.
It's fun to spy on people.
Other then that I only wish the banner on top would link to the forum home like before, that sure was useful.
-
The new forum is clean, nice and fast, which is always good. Something that bugs me still, which was also present in the old forum: no clear link back to the actual comic itself. I can think of two intuitive places such a link would go:
(http://xs537.xs.to/xs537/09120/flipside_forums726.jpg) (http://xs.to)
If simplemachines forums are anything like phpBB, it should be pretty easy to put a link back to your comic website at least at spot #2, right before "The Flipside Forum" link. Of course it would be a whole lot easier if the "Home" button on the big menu at the top actually went back to the main comic site hosting page, and not just the forum page.
My 2 cents. :-)
Also: for the life of me I can't find in the profile a place to put "hide my online status" anywhere. Is this no longer an option? I don't like having a little green button tracking whether or not I'm online in the forum or not. It's like big bro is always watching me. :o
EDIT: dot dot dot... looks like online status is not available for joe average user to see anyhow. in that case ignore the last bit. If online status IS available for joe average user to see who's trolling the boards and I'm just not seeing it, then don't disregard that last statement!
EDIT #2: it is available for joe average user to see, by hovering over the "PM" button. It shows up as text whether or not the user is online or offline. yes, I know I'm probably the only user who likes privacy that much, but... it would be nice to be able to disable this sort of tracking on our side. pretty please? :(

I know in the "sexy Flipside" skin if you click on the banner at the top it redirects you to back to the index
-
*shrug* I just keep a link in my signature
-
Huzzuh, new forum. I was confused for a few seconds when I first got here, but now I like it. Also, changed to Sexy Flipside skin. Awwwww yeah.
-
I seem to be underrepresented in the banner.
-
I seem to be underrepresented in the banner.
I agree, Bern. We should have a sexy Bernadette skin! Do it Brion, DOIT.
-
I really like the new forum, it is very sleek, and the sexy maytage skin looks very cool. I approve of this new abode ^--^
