I don't read unless you count Webcomics....sooo:
Marry Me, Ctrl+Alt+Del, Vg Cats, Fanboys, Nuklear power, Order of the Stick, Looking for group, XKCD, the Book of Biff, Flipside, Paradox Lost (NEVER FREAKING UPDATES), Questionable Content, Sore Thumbs, My Life in a Cube, +EV, The Final Fantasy 6 comic, Mystic Revolution, Least I Could Do, Anders Loves Maria, Menage a 3, Powerpuff Girls Doujinshi, Grim Tales, Dreamless, Candi, Pennie and Aggie, Sequential Art.

Now I was gonna write something about a lot of these but it was all the same so, it pretty much boils down to I'm bored... Al ot so I read a lot of webcomics... some I don't even particularly like.

Kurohime: a comic about a busty witch who is the worlds most powerful magic bullet user. She has been turned into a little girl without any powers by the gods and she meets a young man who idolizes her. When ever she feels love she can turn into her super self and do battle. It's a pretty good action romance comic of the magical girlfreind/bodyguard veritiey. I think the art is choice and the story is pretty fun, even if it can get gimmicy at times. Like I said though, I read it mosty for the babe art. :-[

Kushiel's Mercy by Jacqueline Carey: The end of a complex and engaging series about Imerial de la Corsel no Montrevue, the 3rd in line to the trown in the fictional nation of Terre d'Ange. I highly recomend this series. It's very good, very sexy, very engaging, very heartfelt very, just awsome! If you like Flipside there is no reason you shouldn't like this series. (Apart from the fact that some of the books are very long. Not boring mind you, just long.) But start with Kushiel's Dart, becuase that is the first and the best one IMO.

Imajica by Clive Barker: Another great fantacy novel but more on the literary and wierd side. The author has been quoted as saying he got the material from his dreams and I daresay that the book comes across as very dreamlike. Recomended for folks who like wierd and cool things.

The Year of Living Biblically: One Man's Humble Quest to follow the Bible as Literally as Possible by A. J. Jacobs: I love these kind of slice of life adventure books as long as they are well written. Agnostic A.J. Jacobs sets to learn what the hubub about religion really is when he tries to do everything commanded  by the Bible that isn't illegal or prohibited by his wife. So far his journey has been amusing and thought provoking and I love this kind of book. You don't have to believe in God to enjoy reading it either.

THE AMTRAK WARS by Patrick Tilley
Series of 6 Sci/fi novels

Just finished the Amtrak Wars by Patrick Tilley.

Now the first thing anyone who's read that series to the end will tell you is that the ending sucked... And I've just done the same.  Without getting into details, it felt like the Author got to page 400 and suddenly realised he needed to end the book.  Funny thing is I had no problem with the fate of some of the characters or the Epilogue it's self, (actually I loved it) just the last 3-4 chapters before it which seemed to take the remaining loose ends and either write them off as never having been anything important or tie them up abruptly in contrast to the rest of the series.  Beyond that, there are a few facts that seem to contradict each other along the way, but ultimately I found I could shrug them off in favour of the epic tale that was told.

As a Series, The Amtrak Wars were LEGENDARY! The idea is a post apololyptic United States of America in the 30th century as the radiation from a war in 2015 has finally begun to subside.  A civilisation, known as the Amtrak federation, has spawned underground from those who survived the war in shelters and they have finally surfaced to take back the blue-sky world from the mutants (mutes) who have survived and resisted the radiation to become a tribal race with close links to nature and the earth.  A member of the Federation is captured by the mutes and slowly begins to uncover the truths behind his underground race and the destiny of all in the mute's sacred Talisman Prophecy that fortells the destiny of them all.

The world Patrick creates is amazing and detailed to the point that I could easily imagine a vast number of off-shoot novels and an entire RPG world that could have spawned from it.  Politics and intrigue support a tale of might, magick and technology of varying degrees as a number of characters question their fundamental beliefs and very being as they unravel a web of myth, fiction and lies that they have built their lives upon.  One character in particular leaves us spellbound as we are left constantly uncertain as to his loyalties and certianly the character never quite seems certain themselves right up until the end of the entire series.

reading The HitchHicker's guide To The Galaxy Trilogy Of Five.
Fixed that for ya.  But yeah, you haven't read it before?  I should probably reread it again this summer, it's great stuff and I've forgotten too much of it (haven't read it since high school.)

I just finished John Grisham's new book, The Associate.  I am a Grisham junkie...not sure why, but I read a few some years back, and...well, I liked them enough to end up reading the rest of his books, and now I just have one a year to read.  Great author.

Strictly talking about physical books/comics I'm reading right now, the Preacher and Fables comic series, and Programming Collective Intelligence.

Wanting to pick up that new Ender's book from Orson Scott Card that just came out, though.

*Gets out notepad* I'll have to jot some of these titles down for my next trip to the library.

Well I'm like 2 pages from the end but I'm reading The Lucifer Effect by famed psychologist Dr. Philip Zimbardo. It's been pretty fun and sobering. One of those books that makes you want to take stock of your surroundings and watch them very warily, heh.

I also recently finished a fantastic comic series I'd recommend to, well, pretty much anyone. It's called Y The Last Man. It's a neat, well written "what if" venture into a world where suddenly all the men and male mammals drop dead - well almost all. As the title pretty much gives away, there's one small vestige of testosterone left & boy do things get crazy really fast for that poor guy & his pet monkey...

I loved Y the last man. Finished it some time ago now, but I also suggest it for people looking for new comics. Extremely well written. And Ampersand made me happy.

I'm trying to read Y The Last Man right now, but having some trouble getting into it.  I've also started reading the Oldboy manga, which turns out to be very good.  I didn't realize it came out before the movie.

Also, lately I've been reading a lot of Jojo's Bizarre Adventure online, all the stuff they didn't release over here.  It's ridiculous, but I find it to be very addicting!  It's also a very manly comic. ^^

Wait, wait, wait. There's an Oldboy comic? The vengeance trilogy are some of my favorite movies- And Oldboy has the number one fight scene that has ever been in any movie. I must obtain said comic.

Have you read Ender's Game and Ender's Shadow?

I read both of those and enjoyed them.
But whlie I'm on the subject, maybe I'm being paranoid, but I don't understand the series's somwhat disconcerting fixation on (naked) small children. What's up with that?  :'(

Yes.  Turns out that the movie was adapted from the manga.  The manga has a different feel and seems a bit more fleshed out than the movie... so far I'm still on the first volume, though.  It's being published by Dark Horse.  Might be hard to find if you don't order it through their website.

If you want to check it out online, here's a website that has some scans you can sample:

Grabbing and checking that out. Of course, I like hard copies of things these days that I can fill my library with. Is that a sign I'm getting old?

Oh, I agree!  But online scans are a nice way to try something out before you buy it.  Don't you hate it when you buy a book and think to yourself "I wish I could've read this before I bought it, I would've realized it sucked?"

I've read all of Bleach and Hunter x Hunter online, but I still plan to buy the books as they come out.  Same with Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, but apparently it's been stopped for legal reasons.  And they've already said they're never translating the earlier stories.

By the way, if you see some characters pop in my comic soon who bear a strong resemblance to Jojo's Bizarre Adventure character designs, you'll know why!

I do this with movies. I download them, watch them, and -then- I buy them.

One of the biggest reasons I hope that The Pirate Bay prevails greedy companies and their copyrights.

wow! sounds good. What's it about?

(Angels are my favoritest  :-*)
Title: Re: What Are You Reading Right Now?!?!?! :)
Post by: LordKaT on March 24, 2009, 09:00:08 am
It has nothing to do with angels, sorry.

It's about a kid who wants to be the best assassin ever. He convinces the current best assassin ever to take him on as an apprentice. He's then throw into a world of murder, political balance, magic, and immortality.

It's a fairly typical 3 part fantasy-adventure epic (read also: LOTR, Star Wars, etc...), so you can predict where each of the books will end, but the path to get there is fascinating. The book's aren't typical in that they dive deeper into the political (un)balance of various actions, especially those taken by the assassins, moreso than the lives of the assassins themselves.

It has a pretty neat magic system, that's almost like what Brion has developed, as well as a fairly interesting world.

Overall, though, I loved the books, and I can't wait until 2013 when Brent is scheduled to write another night angel trilogy.

Watchmen..I'm pretty excited.  I haven't seen the movie yet, but I'm mostly excited because I haven't read a good comic (or bad comic) in ages.  ahem, sorry, Graphic Novel I mean.

edit! apart from the three excellent pages of online awesomeness I usually read each week that is!!  (no really I just meant on paper..well plus it seems to be kind of an old-school superheroish comic, which I was raised on.  The art reminds me of old comic style.)

Reviews: I love Lord Of The Rings! this will be my second time reading the books cover to cover without skipping ahead to the Sam and Frodo parts. i picked up on some of Tolkien's other works until recently so I decided it was about time to try the main books again to see how different the point of view became. it did make things vastly different.

Yeah, that should explain the "Jojo-ness" of the new character designs.

Right now I am reading a book titled This I Believe which I dashed to get at my local library after I couldn't put down the sequel This I Believe II. Imagine trying to pin down one of the core, guiding principles in your life right now. Now imagine explaining it through the context of your own personal life story. And keep it at roughly 500 words. The result is really amazing. This all stemmed from a radio program that NPR ran which got something like 50,000 responses. So what you get in your hands in the cream of the crop. You get a collection of wonderfully written bite-size essays whose message, although one you may deeply disagree with, is expressed in such a candid, heart-felt way that you'll at the very least come away feeling like you can understand where the writer is coming from. Reading these essays feels like holding someone's heart in your hands. And the authors range from average joes to famous types who've had a real impact on the world. If you do pick up either volume I recommend not checking to see who the author of the essay is until you're done reading. It's much more fun that way :) Anyway, it's a really good read. If you get a chance, check it out.

At the moment, I'm reading a heap of different books:
1) Barbarians - Romes history from the perspective of the conquered peoples by Terry Jones and Alan Ereira
2) Modern Combat pistols
3) About Jesus (translated title) By Jonas Gardell
4) Bones of the Hills - 3rd book in the conqueror series by Conn Iggulden
5) Flying Guns - The Modern Era

While reading 'Barbarians' and 'About Jesus', my personal oppinions on the catholic church has taken a fatal plunge right along with my personal oppinions of the Roman civilization (or rather lack there-of), and that's due to factual points raised that in my eyes are more than plausible.

Some of Ewan McTeagle's poems:

Oh gi'e to me a shillin' for some fags and I'll pay ye back on Thursday, but if you can wait till Saturday I'm expecting a divvy from the Harpenden Building Society

and also:

Can I have 50 pounds to mend the shed,
I'm right on my uppers,
I can pay you back when this postal order comes from Australia,
honestly,

I was reading Count Zero (I just finished Neuromancer, because I like my classics of Cyberpunk without parts where I forget I'm not reading a textbook on Sumeria) but I switched out to THUD! by Terry Pratchett.

The first Discworld book I read was Men at Arms, so admittedly I feel a bit of preference for the Watch.

On recommendation from a classmate, I picked up A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole. Pretty good so far.

First one I read was The Hogfather. Actually, I saw the movie first, then bought the book and was pleasantly surprised that the movie stayed pretty true to the book. I wonder if any more Diskworld movies are out/coming out...

Also woohoo Leana! Gotta love that Duck. :P

There's also animated versions of Soul Music and Wyrd Sisters. You could find 'em on Youtube if you look.

Hello, first time posting here so I'll make it memorable by posting webcoms, books, and manga that I'm reading.

Webcoms: Candi, Closetspace, Flipside, Lean On Me(Needs to update...), Menage a 3, Misfile, Nightstalker, Sarah Zero, School Bites, Sparkling Generation Valkyrie Yuuki, The Lounge, The Meek, Too Much Information, Venus Envy, Xkcd, and probably some more that I forgot.

Books: Just finished the Pendragon series, now I'm reading The Temple of Winds after which I'll be reading either the next Sword of Truth book, the new Wheel of Time book, the new House of Night book, or the second Haruhi Suzumiya book.

Manga: Well, I'm just gonna post a link to my account on Mangaupdates which I use to keep track of my manga http://www.mangaupdates.com/members.html?id=51074

Well, nice posting, now I'm off to see if this forum has an intro section.

The Unwritten an ongoing Vertigo/DC comic series written by Mike Carey with art by Peter Gross. It's an odd one.. and the first trade paperback collecting it's beginning issues has come out giving anyone bored & with a Barnes & Noble/major book retailer/comic shop a chance to flip thru it. Odds are it'll be there. I hear it's gotten good reviews as well as an Eisner nomination. Describing it is tough.. mostly because I realize I've developed an irrational love for it and can't objectively recommend it, lol. I recommend taking this peek of "On the Ledge" - a Vertigo blog where the writers describe their work & some of the their thinking in, well, their own words.

Speaking of comics this upcoming Saturday (May 1st) is free comic book day. If you're a comic fan and you live in the U.S. consider stopping by your local comic shop. Most shops will offer a sizable stack of freebies as well as good discounts on their inventory. :)

What is Abarat about? Is it any good? Could you tell me a little about it?

I've taken a break from Galilee. I got to the part where the female protagonist runs away from her rich boyfriend. It's an alright book, but a little mundane in spots.
In other Clive Barker related news, I finally found my copy of Imajica. I lost it when I was on the last chapter :(. So now I can finally finish it!  :D

I've kind of overdosed with books lately.
Currently reading:

Princess Resurrection series: Super awesome manga comic with vampires and werewolves and buckets of blood. Also has the requisite magical girlfriend and harem influences, witch I love.

Empowered Volume 5: Took a break from this series when I could  not longer get it illegally on the internets. Got a copy from the library and am as always impressed with the combination of shameless titillation and great storytelling.

Rhapsody series by Elizabeth Haydon: Fantasy novel, pretty good if a little slow in parts. Mostly I really like the characters. They are all unique and awesome. Rhapsody is a beautiful former prostitute who has magical singing powers, Akmed the Snake is a super competent assassin with the ability too feel other's hearts beating and with an awesome crossbow-throwing star weapon he invented himself, and my favorite character, Grunthor is a huge giant with a soft heart and giant knife for every occasion. They mostly explore the center of the world in the first novel. It's pretty cool.

Moon Called by Patricia Briggs: Going back to my guilty pleasure of sex-fueled-supernatural-Mary Sue-crime-fiction, Patrica Briggs reminds me a lot of what Laurel K. Hamilton was like before she started to suck. The Heroin, Mercides, is a sexy mechanic shape shifter with a penchant hard-boiled film noir narration. Pretty good so far, and I can't help but love these kinds of books because the good ones are like a role call of everything I love to the point of embarrasment. If the first novel is as fun as I think it will be, I might read the rest of the series.

What is Abarat about? Is it any good? Could you tell me a little about it?

This chick named Candy hates her life, ends up summoning an ocean from a lighthouse in the middle of the woods, and ends up travelling to a bizarre land made up of islands, each based on an hour of the day (so the Noon island is always bright day, and the Midnight island is always pitch black night, for example). Really imaginative, awesome creepy villain, lots of cool stuff…but, we’ve been waiting like seven years now for book 3. Personally, I’d put that on your list but not read them til the next book comes out so you aren’t stuck in the waiting zone.

Grr…same with Martin’s ASOIAF…though that’s not been taking quite as long.

I like it. The middle is a little slow because not a lot happens in the center of the earth. Then 1400 years has passed and the group is immortal, so it's cool.
I wish immortality was as easy as a little spelunking in real life.

I like Grunthor. He's funny. He's also a sweetheart. But he's still approximatively 2 tons of bad-ass.

I don't have a least favorite character yet. I was worried that Jo would be annoying but I actually find her funny. Achmed grew on me because he is obviously the smartest and best strategist, also, when it seems like he's being mean most of the time it just means he's being extra cautious. The only character I am annoyed with is Gwydion/Sam. He's set up as this big love interest, he lies about his name and origins, and then disappears for a million pages. But it doesn't work out too well for him either.

As far as the villains are concerned, I think the F'dor are quite memorably. Formless demons that can possess anyone and live forever and want to burn the world? Brrrrrr.
I don't think you have to be a unique dude to be a memorable villain exactly. Sometimes you just have to be creepy. The F'dor are creepy. Real creepy.

They remind me of the Yeerks in Animorphs I read when I was a teenager. The Yeerks were creepy for the same reason; they could be anywhere and anybody.

Who would you rather score with, Rhapsody or Jo (age issues aside)?

I like Rhapsody. I don't really find her to be particularly Sue-ish at all. Most of the time she is presented as a relatively likable she's not Too Good for This Sinful Earth, she shows intelligence and resourcefulness several times throughout the book, but doesn't take over everyone else's rolls to the point where the other characters are reduced to useless spectators. Grunthor and Achmed still get to do cool stuff, even if most of the focus is on her. I like how she both stands up for herself and admits when she is wrong. She often takes herself a little too seriously, but to me that's part of her being a well-rounded character.
The most Sue-ish thing about her is her amazing breathtaking beauty which can induce some eye-rolls from me at times, but she mostly isn't aware of it and doesn't take over the story (and honestly, being so pretty everyone immediately falls in love with you is actually a pretty cool super-power). If she is a Sue, to me it's an example of Tropes Are Not Bad because her author-avatar-ness is reduced to the point where I don't feel like I am reading some lady's masturbation fantasy. Mostly I let that kind of stuff slide if the character is likable. I have read the Laurel K. Hamilton Anita Blake books until the unlikeable Sue-ish nature of the protagonist utterly ruined the series, so you could say I am kind of inoculated to it.

I would say Rhapsody between the two of them. Rhapsody seems like she would just be a gentler and more understanding lover and she is prettier then Jo. Also as of where I am at in book 1 (about 150 pages from the end) she had her virginity restored- making her a virgin and a whore at the same time, perfect for my virgin whore complex.  ;) [/sarcasm]

For me the "doesn't realize it" is the most annoyist aspect, but I don't mind explicit beauty in characters...I'm actually more irritated when authors shuffle around making their characters explicitly beautiful when they really should be.

I was always more of a Jo fan. Not sure why...maybe because she's more of a rough diamonds, so to speak. I'd have to reread, but Rhaps, I recall, had qualities I wasn't endeared to...not toosure what though.

She's kind of a whiny diva when she is in the earth, but she grows out of it. It's just realistic to be an unhappy camper when you are stuck under the earth with people you don't know for 1,400 years. I would have probably complained a lot more.

So I finally finished the first novel finally and began the second novel. Turns out that Ashe/Gwydion/Sam are the all same person. So now I have to decide weather I want to ship him and Rhapsody. But so far I am still kind of annoyed at Gwydion because he lied about his name when he went to the past, and the whole name changing thing (including Emily changing her name to Rhapsody) would have made it a whole lot less likely for them to end up together. He was sent there to do one thing, (meet up with Emily/Rhapsody in past so he could marry her in the present,) and he screwed that up. Then he went and got his heart cut out by some demon (I don't know this for sure yet but there have been a few heavy handed hints to this already). It doesn't to me like he's good enough for Rhapsody. Also, I think that Grunthor would make a better pairing with Rhapsody anyway. They get along better then her and either Ashe or Achmed. She says that Grunthor "is out of the question" in a recent chapter but I don't really think this jells with her character. She has been shown to disregard appearance in the interest of getting to know that person's inside multiple times. What makes Grunthor so different? Maybe it's because Grunthor is... (admittedly,) not the sharpest knife in the drawer. That, to me, actually is a good reason to not date or marry someone, but it's still kind of sad. Maybe the author just thought it would be icky.

And I still think the F'dor are really creepy villains. Yes, they are seriously deficient on the Snidely Whiplash style of hammy evil quotient, but I think the paranoia they inspire makes up for it. They are kind of like pod people. Except more "world-burny". :D ;) Some of my favorite villains are actually anonymous. Sauron never had hammy dialog. In fact He never even showed up. But He was still creepy. The Dementors from Harry Potter don't even have a head under their cowl but they scared the bageesus out of me until Harry started being able to jiz out Patronis charms.

What The First Heretic?  thought it was all right apart from the Cadia part, but then thought well it would take a while for it to be populated and a Imperial Guard unit to be formed there.  But then again won't every one else be eventually tainted in the same way with purple eyes as the worshippers?

Moved onto another Horus Heresy book called: Prospero Burns (The Wolves unleashed). So far it reminds me of the book Eater's of the dead which spawned the film The Thirteenth Warrior (thought the film was better in this case after reading the book which was a bit of a let down).  A man from the Middle East who travels with the Men From The North who tells stories and fights along side them.

blazer drive;
bleach;
fairy tail;
gantz;
high school of the dead;

hunter x hunter;
Kantakeyo hitman reborn!;

I have just started reading Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides.  It's alright, so far.  The novel has not gotten too much into the narrator's intersexuality, but has touched upon it enough to peak my curiosity.  I'm also reading the next to last volume of the For Better or For Worse comic strip, which is excellent, by the way.

No, really, that's the title.  I'm not kidding.

now is all that printed on the front of the book? because that's awesome.

I am currently reading One Hundred Days: Memoirs of the Falklands battle group commander
not actually that bad, considering its written by an admiral not a novelist.

I read through Moggworld which was really witty, and a good book poking fun at MMORPG's. I finished reading neverwhere today, and really liked it, not the best of Gaimen's books, but I liked it. I started remains of the day... and it's kinda really boringly written.

Momentarily I read a book called "The Joy Of Writing Sex" by Elizabeth Benedict.
She starts with a view on "our" society. It has to be the American society because I as an European can not identify with what she describes. Was this Lewinsky girl really such a big deal over there?
I imagine Angela Merkel caught with an intern. Shure, it would be a big laugh and fill the summer slump, but I doubt anything here would change because of that.
And Silvio Berlusconi with an intern, ... what an other one?

But it get's better when she goes to the later more societal independent topics.

The last two weeks I read through this pile:
Ready Player One - Ernest Cline (I highly recommend this one if you are into gaming and have been so for a while)
The Left Hand of God - Paul Hoffman (Really good fantasy book set in medieval times in northern America)
Halo: Ghosts of Onyx - Eric Nylund (If you like Halo then this brings a lot more story to the table. Many of the philosophical questions around the Halo universe is also explored. A very good read.)
Halo: Glasslands - Karen Traviss (Sequel to Ghosts of Onyx. This one is even better than the first and explores a lot of new areas of the Halo universe)

In my reading pile right now:
The Last Four Things - Paul Hoffman (Sequel to The Left Hand of God. Based on the first one, a really good read.)
Orphanage - Robert Buettner (I read through a few pages of this in the store. It looks like a fantastic book.)
Ender's Game - Orson Scott Card (Same as above. It seems like a great book and I look forward to read it.)

Ooooo, I've wanted to read this. But haven't gotten around to it yet.

I had just finished 20,000 Leagues under the sea and wanted something a little less...biology (though, it was a great book.)

Reading The Stand now, "unedited" which is a lie, because I looked at mom's original version from the early 1980s, and King decided in the re-release to "update" the year and make it set in the 90s. This MIGHT have been an okay idea, but now all the cultural references are stupid. Like, I love Crosby Stills and Nash's Daylight again album, but when King says the song "Wasted on the Way" was constantly playing on the radio...yeah...by the 90s, naw. Not happening. And would anyone have called the disease "Captain Trips" by the 1990s? I doubt it.

Aside from that complaint, it's actually pretty good. The characterization is done well, and I always like the way he writes in general. Just wish he hadn't changed the dates when it was supposed to be "unedited." Kinda counter productive :/
