The origins of the word "dildo" are unknown, but one of the theories is that it originally referred to a peg used to lock an oar in place on a small boat (which had a similar shape). This name may have also lent itself to the island and town.
The first recorded use of the word in English is "Choise of Valentines or the Merie Ballad of Nash his Dildo" (c. 1593) by Thomas Nashe.
It also appeared in Shakespeare:
