Title: Ask Maytag: Questions Thread III
Post by: Brion Foulke on March 18, 2009, 05:58:13 am
This is just like the character interviews, except the answers show up as vote incentives every day.

You may ask Maytag any question you want! It can be about the politics and pop culture of our real world, or about something in Iscariot, or philosophy in general, advice, or anything about Maytag herself and the people she knows. Funny or serious questions are OK!

You may can also ask the following characters questions:

Bernadette
Crest
Suspiria
Glyph
Umber
Sierra
Orransong
Bloody Mary
Kindred
Qtalda
Vajra

Some guidelines:
1. Keep your question to no more than 1 paragraph, and preferably as concise as possible. Your question may be skipped if it is too wordy.
2. Try to make it not too similar to other recent questions, or it may be passed over due to redundancy.
3. Watch your grammar and spelling. You don't have to be perfect, but at least put a little effort into them.

That's about it. Remember that unlike the interviews, you can ask as many questions to Maytag as you want, and even ask follow up questions to questions that have already been answered. Have fun!

Yes.  I edited the post to include a list of characters that you can ask.

Dear Crest,

Just what did you mean by "Well, When they eventually do split up I'll be there to pick up the pieces, Maytag." (http://www.flipsidecomics.com/comic.php?i=420) which you said at the campfire?

Dear Qtalda

Why are you such a bitch? Were you abused as a child or something? Is it just becuase you are old and crotchety and your uterus has all dried up? Do you need a hug? What's wrong with you?  :)

Dear Bloody Mary,

How did you learn to make fear demons? Can you make one at any time, or do you have to be well fed or something first?

Post by: Admiral Apocolypto on March 18, 2009, 01:32:39 pm
Brion, just to clarify.  If we don't want Maytag there, do we have to specify that?  For example, will Shay's question go to Bloody Mary with Maytag watching, or just Bloody Mary?

Maytag will be there no matter what, since it is still her "corner."  Sorry!  Maybe I'll pick a coming month to be a month of answers without Maytag present.

Dear maytag,

ok. So you would easily sacrifice yourself for Bern. But what if you had to choose who you wanted to save between: Bernadette or a poor defenceless little girl?

Maytag will be there no matter what, since it is still her "corner."
I still don't see why she has to be there if the question specifically requests that she NOT be there.  I think Maytag would respect the person it was asked to enough to exit the room if necessary.

Aww, don't be like that. If he doesn't want Maytag gone, he won't move her. It'll just annoy him if we focus on it. Wait patiently and one of these days he might do the month without Maytag.

QUESTION: Maytag, while you claim that your arm can be regrown and your finger can be reattached, you say your breasts could only be "repaired...sort of". Why?

Or he could, you know, just do one without Maytag when someone requests it, which would probably be rare.  It doesn't make sense to say "I won't do it once, but I'll do it thirty times."

Yes, it's a totally arbitrary rule, but I like the idea that it's Maytag's corner so you can't get rid of her, and even if you ask for her to not be there, she will just ignore it.

Alright, this time I'd like to have this question be answered by Bern. I hope this one hasn't already been asked in previous threads....

Okay, question time!

Bern: When you were growing up did you know that you were lesbian? Or before you met Maytag in general? Since you wanted to be a knight all of your life I imagine realizing that you were one had to have been awful. Were you in denial at first?

Thank you for your time!

Dear Maytag,

If you and Bern had to fight, and you both really had to try to win, do you think you would win? Let's assume the fight starts with you outside Bern's sword range but close enough that a fireblast would hit you, too. I get the feeling you would win.

Dear Maytag and Bernadette,

I have three questions:
1) How badly are you going to hurt Glyph if he does try using his special eyepiece again?
2) How are things going to go with Suspiria from now on?
3) How do the two of you feel about getting Maytag's arm replaced?

PS: You two are amazing.

1. Like I said before, it'll be the last time he sees anything.
2. Shouldn't be hard to keep her in line until she gets some rest, but I doubt she'll try something like that again.
3. I'm all for it.  It'd be awful of me to object, especially after that potion she gave me helped me when we first encountered Mary.

(At the postscript) Thank you!

So it's from the old forum, then?

I see it now.  Oops, sorry, looks like I did skip that one after all.  I was confused because there was a similar question to yours asked by Strike Central.  The reason I skipped your question has nothing to do with you asking for Maytag not to be there, it's because Mary's answer would have been exactly the same as the one to Strike Central's question, which was the day before, so I decided it would be redundant.

Question for Lady Bernadette, Knight in all but name:  :-*

You, a skilled sword teacher, have stated you're teaching Crest "the basics", not your advanced style. Also, we've seen you use simple, basic thrusts (and to great effect) against a certain maw. Yet you've stated in your interviews, with a perfectly straight face, that you are unable to efectively attack with your swords without being attacked first. Which brings me to my question...

¿How many poker lessons has Maytag given to you? Your poker face is certainly a marvel to behold!  ;D

(edited, changing the order for better clarity)
(edited again, cropping out excessive wording -Brion, feel free to ignore this if it you had the art already done).

Not to be a dick, I just thought I'd point out that there was a period of about 4 months where Brion kept the Ask Maytag thread open but nobody asked any questions ... and I was the only one asking questions for a good length of time. There was a backlog of my brain damage in that thread, hence a lot of my questions got answered.

New question for Bern:  :-*

You actually called yourself, a cute, pretty, slim redhead whith an habit of out-knighting whole chivalric orders, out-fighting invencible monsters, out-smarting smartass jesters (sorry, May) AND bitch-slapping level 3+ sorcerers, "boring".

What's then "interesting" for you? Blindfolded, one-handed chainsaw juggling? Parachuteless base jumping? Integrating relativity and quamtum theories by back-of-envelope calculations on your sleep? Becoming the Mesiah (by either the Gourd and/or the Shoe factions)? Or ALL the above?

Just wondering :)

This is a question that can be answered by either Sir Orransong, Crest, and/or Bernadette.

(And, if it's Bern answering, this time I'm not teasing her)  :-*

We know Crest had some previous training with the Knights, before he started taking lessons with Bern. Up to which point? I mean, what were his skills like, when Bern started training him? Raw beginner? Just the very basics? Trained but out of practise?  ???

(And, in the improbable case all three of them decide to answer, follow-up question: Doesn't it feel a bit crowded, four people and a desk in that little panel?) ;D

Title: Re: Ask Maytag: Questions Thread III
Post by: erana on April 02, 2009, 01:29:18 pm
LordKat, I beg to differ: I *do* "make an appeareance", as you say, since I now live in Silmaria as... well, actually the title is "first wife of the consort prince". See, the man who brought me back from Hades, the Prince of Shapeir, proposed to me, and I gladly acepted.  :-* But later he also proposed to two other women ::) (being the adopted son of the Caliph of Shapeir -something I knew when I acepted- he's suppossed to be able to marry up to four women), and then he actually renounced to the Silmarian throne in favour of the second one, Elsa von Spielburg. So my unusual official title in the kingdom. And you thought Bern and Maytag had a strange relationship!  ;)

Incidentally, I guess that explains why I was able to follow Bern's feelings and thoughts so well a few posts ago; I'm also in the situation of being with someone with whom I'd very much want to have a monogamous relationship, but for whom I was willing to compromise.  :-[ Because of how much we learned to love each other back in Mordavia, and because how he rescued me from death -twice. Plus, I also helped him save the world quite a few times. When people have a long story together, they tend to react to each other in ways that are anything but simple...

Sorry for going on to such lengths with the story of my life, that probably is of no interest for anyone in this place. But at least, I managed to find at least one point of relevance to the current chapter.

Edit: Sorry, Brion and mods, the fact this is NOT the chapter 20 discussion thread slipped my mind. Feel free to move or delete the post if it is inapropiate.

Dear Maytag,

North Korea launched a long range missile today. They say it was carrying a satellite, other nations say it was a long range ballistic missile test. I think they cryogenically froze Kim Jong Il - that tiny lesbian-looking bastard - and launched him into space, and the satellite will return in 200 years time when KJI will return to Earth as the Prince of Space, and fight off the evil aliens whose weapons cannot harm him yet they scare the crap out of him anyway.

What do you think?

Dear Bernadette,

Just a quick strategic question for you. How do would you deal with a ranged (archers, dagger throwers) opponent? (excluding sorcery, and escape is impossible) As your particular style of fighting is a defensive one and seems to weigh on your opponent coming at you. Does it have some kind of trick to dealing with archers? Or does it kind of put you in a improvisational position?

Dear Maytag,

Now that your cheating is out in the open and it turns out that Bern knew and didn't care, a pertinent question has been raised in my mind:

How does it feel to have dodged the bullet and avoided your well-deserved comeuppance AGAIN?

Dear Brion,

Are the answers of the Maytag Corner considered "canon"? As in, do the characters in them answer acording to their "real" personalities and what's in their minds in the comic's continuity, or it's like the intermissions, with blatant out-of-character sillyness? (Brick Bern comes to mind).

It's not technically considered "canon," as it's not part of the story.  But at the same time, all of the characters are meant to be portrayed as true to their characters, aside from their real world knowledge.  So their answers are meant to be real answers, as if they had stepped out of the comic to answer you themselves.  In short, it's exactly like the interview section.

Is this a well known Lingua Franca, or does really everybody in Iscariot speak the same language?

Hey May,
if you had a chance to learn some more sorcery, even just few spells, would you be interested?

Maytag already answered that question in her first interview:
Quote
Setsuna asks: "If you had a chance, would you study magic?"
Maytag: Definetly!! I would love to do that! I've always wondered what it'd be like to break my seal, and unleash my hidden power. Everyone has the potential to become a sorcerer, you know... even someone as sorcerer-hating as Bernadette! The only problem is, the seals we have on our minds are tough to break... it takes years and years of training just to break the first seal, and that's the easiest one! But if I have time later in life, I definetly want to try!

Quote
(On the site note, I vote and see the current answer, but what do I do to see the archives? I mean, I'd like to know how May answered some of the old questions...)

So would I!

Does Maytag's recent Nagelring-guaranteed revelation that she had decided not to cheat on you anymore BEFORE she acepted to pose for Kin (and thus that she doesn't consider artistic posing to be something sexual), combined with the artistic value of the comic (anyplace you appear in it can and will be considered artistic!) ease your mind on that shock?

This is a question for any Mage type character.

Is magic in the Flipside world intelligent?

I ask because Maytag seems to have no trouble retrieving just the right item from her pouch of infinite accessibility.  One of the fantasy authors I had read long ago, Lawrence Watt-Evans, wrote about quartermasters for armies that spent time practicing packing bag of holding so they would have the items their regiment, platoon, etc. would need first since last items in were first items out.  The discussion of practical magic has always been a lot of fun for me in fantasy, see Terry Practchet and the Discworld, and I would like to know if magic in this Universe responds to the wielder's (or user's) desire or if it is a power like electricity with no intelligence or sapience.

Dear Suspiria

About your June 23 explanation about how Iscariot magic works...

There's on Earth a certain series of books and games, which makes the following description about magic: "Art and Science of causing changes in reality with the mind. It is a science, because it's bound by a very strict set of principles and laws; its is an art because a living mind's personal thoughts and interpretation of those are needed to cause such changes - no machine can use Magic's Laws to do magic".

Would the above be also a good description of Iscariot seal-based magic, or is it diferent in some important way?

Moss, Have you met more people that you can get along with since your encounter with Maytag? What about the twins?
How is your uncle doing and was the urgency of visiting him related to your agenda to reach the 4th level of sorcery?
You seem to know what is each of the twin's weakness is. Care to elaborate or at the very least hint on the weakness of each of them?

(OOC: That being said, I'm halfway expecting him to just spit at my face, laugh at me and refuse to answer most/all of the questions. However, since he did go past a change in personality as a result of his last encounter with maytag, and he's proven to associate and even be with friendly terms with more people, aka the twins, I'm hoping he will be a bit more civilized this time and maybe even answer...)

Dear person/s willing and/or able to answer this question:
What would happen, if you fixed a heavy weight to the outside of an open dimensional bag and then threw it in the ocean?

Another question for our dear zen-mistress Maytag:
What is the sound of one hand clapping? (Yeah, I know, I'll be going straight to the Vorpal Sea for this one, thanks) ;)

Hay, May!

I just started reading your story tonight... er *looks at clock*, last night (hah, I've been reading all throughout the night. SCREW SLEEPING). Ironically, I found it while searching for my black and white jester costume I wore to Anime North.

But anyways, on to the question! What made you change up your outfit? I loved the arm dangles you had going on there, though don't get me wrong, the new one is very nice too (GOD, I WANT YOUR UNREALISTICALLY BEAUTIFUL ANIME FIGURE).

Haha, hi again May.

I'm going to keep throwing questions at you as I encounter them from your stories (very entertaining; I still haven't gone to bed yet; I'm going to go insane from the sleep deprivation you'll cause me).

Why didn't you get your body parts reattached (i.e. your finger)? You mentioned later that it could be done. I'd think you'd want to, not just for yourself (you'd be impeding your manual dexterity slightly), but also for Bern (every time she sees the missing finger she'd feel guilt or sorrow, and you mentioned that you'd do anything to make her happy; seeing you maimed when you could be fixed seems like it would just humble her and make her feel depressed).
Title: Re: Ask Maytag: Questions Thread III
Post by: Ecco on August 08, 2009, 03:27:54 pm
I think both your questions can be answered here, Creazil:
1. He first suit got ripped to shreds by Voulger, so naturally she had to get a new one.

2. She did get her finger re-attatched. It just doesn't show it being re-attached. Anyway, its back on her hand in chapter 11. As for her arm now, there not really in any place currently where they can get it returned to normal.

Dear Maytag,

Have you ever been asked this question?
Title: Re: Ask Maytag: Questions Thread III
Post by: Creazil on August 10, 2009, 06:01:01 pm
Thanks for responding, Ecco.  ^__^

I figured she would get a new costume to replace her destroyed one, but I was wondering as to why the style of it changed (i.e. her shoulders are now showing, the low cut front is replaced with a halter top style, etc.). Why didn't she keep the same design?

(I'm guessing it's just to add variety, or because the artist liked this costume better).

However, her finger does not get reattached/regrown before she loses her arm (it's still missing in later chapters, even as far as Ch15 Pg26), so I guess she decided to keep it like that when she left town. Which then I have to ask again, why?

Why would she keep it like that? Wouldn't that just hurt Bern to see her like that?

And I take it that Suspiria (or the Phalanx, specifically the bandaged one that's suspected to be one of the conclave) weren't strong enough magically to reattach/regrow May's arm?

Post by: Ecco on August 10, 2009, 08:30:36 pm
Oh hey... your right about the finger. I didn't notice that before! I really don't know then. As for her costume, I guess it was just time to change it up. If I had the opertunity to change my jester suit, I probably would.

Dear Characters of Flipside,

my questions are simple. first one is, how come the 'interviews' havent been done since '07? it's been almost 2 years since the last one was supposed to be 'updated'. secondly, how come there's no interview for bloody mary? D: also, and i know there's really no answer you can give me, but, why did Kin have to die? D: i REALLY liked him. but i'm also very torn, cause i really like the bloody mary character. ((i feel the same about her as Maytag does. that she's just in a shitty situation and is misunderstood. /: poor girl.)) oh, i just thought of something else... i know that it's been gone over, but why cant Brion change the story line so Mary can be cured? D: so lame. and if she did get cured, hypothetically speaking of course, would she LOOK normal? i mean, would she go back to scar-less skin? cause i think that would be terrible. i think she's very pretty the way she is, scars and eyes and all. i'm not a fan of the teeth and claws though. just saying.

*prepares for a beating* o 3 o

Beating? Nah. I feel mostly the same way about Mary and don't believe myself to be alone.
The question is though, if you met someone like Bloody Mary in real life, would she actually be sexy?

Dear Maytag, if you and Bern ever break up, will you marry me?  Or at least extend the same offer you made Crest?  I don't mind if you wanna sleep around at the same time.

Alternately

Dear Maytag, other then juggling, knife throwing, and jokes, are there any other major elements to your jester show and if so, what are they?

i would like to say yes, but i honestly dont know how i would react in that situation. i dont know the future, and can only try to be accepting of everyone. but i'm not as 'strong' as maytag is. i dont think i could let her just eat my arm. i accept pain, but it's far too unbearable to 'block' it like she does. i just try to get over it, learn from it, and move on. anyways, i do very much like Mary's character and would like to see much more from/about her.

Dear Crest,

How do you intend to follow up your promise to Suspiria: "I'll put up with you...!"?
Do you have a romantic interest in her and if so, do you think you'll have to courage to act on it?

Last but not least: How do you think Orransong's face will look like if you'll eventually come back home with the genius sorceress as your girlfriend?

Anyone happen to have the .gif answer for that one and can link it to me? seems I've missed this voting (or was this question skipped?).
I've just seen the answer to Foof's question which is just after mine.

Thanks in advance.

Dear Maytag,

I've had a few of my questions answered awhile back and I thank you for that, however there is one situation I'm having trouble with and I don't quite know how to handle it. My dude friends are dicks so I thought my chances of getting a good answer from them was rather slim. Anywho after a somewhat disastrous date I'm not sure how to confront the girl I went out with (long story short we got lost for awhile). She was actually pretty cool with everything, but I haven't heard anything out of her for awhile. Any advice on how I should handle this?

what kind of vehicles do you have in iscariot? the only one i've seen (and correct me if i'm wrong) was a horse drawn carriage that you , bern, crest, and suspiria got in. here we have cars the use internal combustion engines, it's sorta like a carriage that's powered by a constant explosion. but you don't get blown up, (expect for some very rare cases, on race built cars that have engines that are pushed to the limit, but there are safety devices in place to protect the driver)

There's an "edit" button in the top right of your posts.
For future reference, people on the internet tend to prefer it when you use that and add "P.S."s onto the same post rather than make a whole bunch of short posts in rapid succession. I've been on forums where they seriously rip into people for doing that, and although I like to think of this forum as too nice for that, I feel I should warn you.  ;)

Two questions for Maytag:

1) Would you say you care about the truth for its own sake, or do you only care about the truth as a means to achieve your goals? When talking to Mary you said (http://www.flipsidecomics.com/comic.php?i=685), "My philosophy is to accept the facts in front of you, no matter how terrible, because quick acceptance allows you the best possible mindset for dealing with any situation." This is true for most situations, but not all of them. For example, a person without much self-confidence might prefer not to learn that some people have a poor opinion of him, because this would make him even less confident, which might in turn have a negative effect on his relations with other people. A person like that, who often allows himself small amounts of self-deception when he thinks it will lead to a better outcome, would consider truth to be an instrumental value, that is, something that he cares about only because it helps him achieve the things he really desires, as opposed to someone who considers truth a terminal value, that is, something that he really, fundamentally desires for its own sake. What about you, May, is truth an instrumental or a terminal value for you?

2) Do you enjoy taking it up the ass?

Dear Lady Bernadette,

I'm a martial arts instructor and have been practicing for over 9 years.  I have recently picked up sword fighting (broadsword) and am finding it quite difficult.  I'm in good physical shape and control, but I'm much shorter than the average bear (5ft exactly).  In martial arts I trained my flexibility and jump height to a point where my agility could make up for the difference in height.  However, I'm having a hard time accommodating for my height disadvantage with broadsword.  Agility still seems to be useful, buy my taller opponents have more weight behind their strikes and a longer reach.  Any and all advice would be welcome from an accomplished swordswoman as yourself.  Thank you for your time!

Regards,

This is true for most situations, but not all of them.

Wow, my ultra-long question actually got an answer (and a pretty good one at that).  ;D Thanks May!

Maytag, I'm curious as to how you obtained that Angel Breath (the ring with angel wings you've used to get out of a couple high situations, and by high I don't mean stoned).

Hey Maytag,

You mentioned a long time back you had some trainers who you based your name on. What were they like?

Dear Moss,

Has Bern's weakness changed from "Lesbian"?  If so, what is it now?

Maytag, while I understand the basics of how a D-bag works on the inside, I'm still a bit fuzzy on how it works from the outside. How do you carry it with you? Is it bound to you in some way? Do you keep this item, with no outside mass or volume, in your pocket, or tied to your wrist? In your current predicament (inside the warp box) Moss indicated that you don't have access to your "bag of tricks." How was it taken away from you? Once it's been taken away, is it possible for you to reposess it, or even locate it?

Where do you get one in the first place? Is there a vendor somewhere with a bag of bags, or do you have to get it made by someone?

1) Dear Suspiria, I am truly sorry about Kin. He was a good guy. My question is, how specific do spellwords have to be? Let me give an example: suppose you have a specific spellword for, say, conjuring a watermelon-sized fireball. Would you need another spellword for a bigger (or smaller) fireball, or the same spellword would work?

2) My fine lad Glyph, have you use you cloth-piercing instrument on Qtalda? If yes, what did you see?

3) My good chap Kindred, does your head hurt? I'm joking, sorry for my bad taste. I noticed that, on your first fight with Mary, Suspiria had to put some thunder in your sword. Does that mean it's not enchanted at all, or is it impossible to enchant a weapon to burst in some kind of element at will? And why is ice the "wimpiest element"?

4) Dear Mary, how immune to magic and physically strong are you? Because, after seeing you block a thunder-enhanced sword with your teeth and not getting a static discharge (at least you seemed unaffected), I get the feeling you are something else besides just a sexy zombie girl.

(OOC: Serious questions are serious.)

Dear Maytag

There is a game on the internet named League of Legends (by the creators of DotA which is part of Warcraft) and there is a knife-wielding jester named "shaco" as one of the characters. Are you modeled after this said character? And if not, do you believe he was modeled after you?

Dear Bern

 1. Other than the fact that Glyph is a pervert, why do you hate him.
 2. Have you ever considered having an open "relationship" with more than just Maytag, maybe with Suspiria or even Crest?

Okay, I have vote incentives until the 15th.  I could use a few more questions.  If anyone feels like asking anything, now would be a good time as your question will be answered almost immedietly!  Remember, you can ask *almost* any member of the cast, (but Maytag is the one who most likes answering questions.)

What are some of the pets kept by people in Iscariot beyond creatures from Earth?  Any pet swamp dragons for instance?

Ooh yes!

Dear The Thin Man

Who are you?"
  ;D

Okay, seriously now.  :P I got a question right here.

Dear May!

Fashion loving fan here, just like Moby but with, uh, slightly more conventional taste I hope! Anyway I love your jester outfit and I'm really curious about whether it's all designed to be part of one complete costume, particularly your boots. I'm sure you wore a different pair at some point, but I really like the knee high boots you wear now and they just seem to go perfectly with the rest of the outfit even if they weren't originally designed for it.  So are your boots designed to be part of the jester outfit or did you add them afterwards, and as you didn't seem to need them way back when the story began do you wear them for protection or for fashion?

Anyway they're really cool and make you a kickass jester so I hope you keep wearing them.  ;D Sorry if that sounds like several questions or one really long one!  ;D

Dear Maytag,
Have you checked out TellTale's game Poker Night at the Inventory?
It would be so awesome if someone did a clone of the game using fameous poker playing web comic characters, like you.
If you get a chance to play it or watch some YouTube videos, which character would you most like to play against?  The least?

It's good to see you whole again!

When are you going to get your hair cut short?
when are you going to stop being in the background?
and lastly don't you know it dangerous to play with swords inside? go out and practice somewhere.

I looked, and I hope no one's asked this, cause I didn't see it:

May, are you an albino? Cause your eyes are red, and your hair is blondish (not so much white, though.)

Also, if you were to name a dog, what would it be?

what is the best food ever eaten in your world? (I've only seen MayTag eat something with fish on her date with Crest)

@Maytag: do you believe in soulmates? Also if you could have the ideal date what would it be?
@Bern: big time fan and long time viewer, what is the greatest thing Maytag has ever done for you...something that hasn't been already shown in the books.
